Fruitfly -- parasitoid wasp study tackles coevolution

<Tagline>Leips Lab investigates species diversity and interactions</Tagline>

Drosophila – parasitoid wasp study may expand understanding of coevolution
Leips Lab at UMBC investigates species diversity and interactions

By Emma Barnes

The relationship between fruit flies and the wasps that prey on them is reminiscent of a 1970s horror movie, says graduate student Chia-Hua Lue. “Basically, the Alien movie is inspired by parasitoid wasps,” says Lue. Her research in Jeff Leips’ lab in the UMBC Department of Biological Sciences describes the distribution and interaction of fruitfly and parasitoid wasp species in different geographical areas. With these findings, Lue can begin to explore ideas of coevolution, or how the evolution of the wasps affects the evolution of the fruitflies, and vice versa.

Lue has described about 35 species of Drosophila fruitflies in her samples, most of which are native to North America. Parasitoid wasps are their main natural enemy. Adult wasps inject their eggs into fly larvae, which then consume the larva after a period of development.

Lue uses peach traps to collect fruitfly larvae containing the eggs of parasitoid wasps. “By sampling the flies, at the same time I am sampling for the parasitoid wasps,” she says. She has carried out this work in seven sites on the East coast ranging from Florida to Ontario, trying to determine why certain species occur only in some areas, and why certain wasps attack a particular species of fruitfly. She also studies how other species of fly and wasp in the community and environmental factors influence these interactions. “Her work so far has revealed that the species diversity of both hosts and their parasitoids changes dramatically among her locations and at different times of the year,” according to Leips.

The data from these peach traps represent months of difficult work for Lue. She has to collect peach traps from each site twice a day for a week. Poor weather conditions and other complications often frustrate her efforts. At an organic farm in Maryland, some pigs escaped from their pens and ate all of her peach traps. “So I just lost that day completely. You cannot get it back,” she says.

Much of Lue’s work involves difficult and complicated classification of these different species of parasitoid wasps. In such an understudied field, many of the wasps are not even identified or properly named. There are only two experts in the world on this particular subfamily of parasitoid wasps, including Matt Buffington, research entomologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and Lue’s co-advisor. Lue works with Buffington to learn how to identify the wasps. She spends most days at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, comparing the morphology, or body structure, of their specimens to those of her samples. Even then, she still has to carefully determine if the museum samples are named correctly if they have been described at all.

In order to identify the wasps, Lue combines DNA sequencing with morphology–often spending eight to twelve hours per day with her eye glued to the microscope. Intricate diagrams of “characters” or identifying features help her to identify wasps. Lue studied this difficult and time-consuming method for three years before beginning her project. She appreciates this in-depth study of the wasps’ physical structure rather than the quicker method of DNA sequencing. “When the technique evolves too fast, you [forget] how beautiful the original animal looks like,” Lue says.

As the main natural enemy of most arthropods, wasps have an enormous impact on ecosystems and may work as biocontrol agents. A 2011 Washington State University study identified a species of parasitoid wasp as a possible predator for Drosophila suzukii, an invasive species ravaging California fruit crops. Apart from this study, there has been relatively little research on the interactions between parasitoid wasps and fruitflies. Lue’s research expands the possibilities of using parasitoid wasps to neutralize harmful fruitfly populations, rather than utilizing hazardous pesticides to kill the flies. “Lue's work is important in the context of biocontrol, because we would like to know what the impacts of release of a biocontrol agent might be on other species in the community. Her research lays the groundwork for this understanding,” Leips says.

Now that she has clearly documented the species compositions in these populations, Lue can begin to investigate more difficult questions about how biodiversity shapes the coevolution between wasps and fruitflies. This line of research would reveal universal ideas about coevolution, and shed light on the complexities of ecosystems throughout North America. “Studies such as this are important for understanding how the global loss of biodiversity that we are witnessing today might influence the evolution, and evolutionary potential, of the surviving species,” says Leips.

Dance Department 2014 Wrap-Up

<Tagline>American College Dance Festival and a New Building!</Tagline>

2014 was a banner year for the UMBC Dance Department. Senior dance major Alexis Renee DeVance's piece, Salt. Rose. Witness., was selected for the American College Dance Festival's National Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The piece was performed at the ACDFA's East-Central Regional Dance Festival in March 2014, where it was one of eleven dances chosen for the regional gala. Only three dances from the regional gala were selected for national recognition at the Kennedy Center. Alexis then received the top award for Outstanding Student Choreography!

The department moved into UMBC's spanking new Performing Arts and Humanities Building just in time for fall semester classes. In August, we hosted the Dance Education Training Institute, co-sponsored by Clancyworks and Baltimore County Public Schools. We're all ecstatic about our new Dance Cube and Dance Technology Studios. Find out more about these beautiful facilities here. We kicked off our performance season in October with a shared concert by Washington, D.C.- based companies Rebollar Dance and Clancyworks, and hosted the Maryland All-State Dance Auditions in December.
