Color Print Usage

Over the past 3 months DPS IT has been looking more closely at the color print overage charges for the Xerox copiers located in the University Center and the 4th floor of Sherman Hall East. We have been consistently over in color prints at a higher level than normal for the last 3 months which causes our monthly bill to increase significantly. Periodically overages are going to happen and that is fine, but this recent surge has been consistent.

We ask that you please be mindful of when printing/copying in color. If you need to print in color please do so. That is what the machines are for. But if it is something that doesn't warrant printing in color please refrain. To give an example of something that you may want to think about printing in color is a document that has one item (i.e. a letter or a bar) in color on it. Even though it is one small item that is in color we get charged for a color print.

Some things you can do to help. Make sure the default when you print from your computer is set to black and white. If you need any assistance with this please contact DPS IT via http://dpshelp.umbc.edu . The copiers should be set by default to copy in black and white.

This #GivingTuesday, UMBC Students Need Your Help

The Thanksgiving leftovers have dwindled away and many of us have put a significant dent in our holiday shopping lists, having bustled through Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. Three years ago, Giving Tuesday was established to encourage us to to break away from the consumerism and chaos that has swallowed up our holiday season and return to a spirit of giving.

This year, there are a number of great causes to consider at UMBC for Giving Tuesday.

While many students will enjoy much-needed time off from classes with family and friends over their spring break this March, four different groups of students will be giving back to the community on service trips through Alternative Spring Break.

They need our help.

Each of these trips requires resources. It’s gas for vans or a plane ticket on trips that are further afield. It’s food and accommodations where they’ll be staying. Sometimes, there are even fees associated with the opportunity of participating in the projects. The more we can help them raise now, the less money each student participant will have to pay out of pocket in March. Even a modest gift of $10 or $20 will make a difference.

These students are making an impact in the world beyond UMBC, and they need your support. Please consider donating to one of the Alternative Spring Break projects, or to any of the other worthwhile student-led projects that are affecting change both on and off campus.

Your commitment truly is a gift that will keep on giving, and our communities will benefit from the great work of the students this spring.

Thank you!

Open Forum on Upcoming Construction Projects (12/5)

Facilities Management will be providing an open forum to provide details about all upcoming campus construction projects. The open forum will be held in ITE Room 104 (Lecture Hall 7) from 12-12:50 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2014.

The projects to be discussed affect the entire campus population and will be of interest to the majority of staff, faculty and students on campus.

The New Campus Entranceway

This project will alter the intersections at UMBC Blvd., Research Park Drive, and Hilltop Circle to incorporate traffic circles for improved safety and better traffic flow. Pedestrian plazas adjacent to the RAC and Admin Bldg will be improved, as well.

Stormwater Facility (Pond) Renovation

This project will perform upgrades to enhance the function and appearance of the pond. The perimeter walls will be replaced, the pond deepened, and the landscape upgraded to provide a more functional stormwater runoff, as well as a more pleasing gathering space.

The Fine Arts Building Renovation

This project will renovate space vacated by departments relocating into the new Performing Arts and Humanities Building. The upper floors of the north and south wings will be renovated to accommodate other departments and building systems will be updated for more efficient operation.

Apartment Renovations

This project will renovate West Hills Apartments, the last phase of renovation of the apartment complexes. Hillside and Terrace Apartments were completed in previous phases.

The Event Center

The Event Center and Arena is proposed to be approximately 164,000 gross sq. ft. The center will operate as a multipurpose event facility to host a variety of revenue and non-revenue generating activities that serve both the University and local community needs. It will also serve as the home for the Athletic Dept. and the varsity basketball and volleyball programs. The project site is located along the east side of Hilltop Circle, opposite Commons Drive.

Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building

This project will seamlessly connect teaching and research activities to enhance and stimulate collaborative approaches to advance the State's biotechnology industry and increase the number of STEM graduates. The building, located on the site of the Academic Services Building, will provide approximately 131,000 gross sq. ft. of flexible and adaptable research and education spaces to support current and future interdisciplinary life science programs.

Administration Building Green Roof

The France-Merrick Foundation approved a $1 million grant to support building a vegetated roofing system/green roof on the top floor of the Administration Building. This project will illustrate the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Thank you for your participation in this information sharing opportunity.

We encourage you to join our myUMBC group to receive news and updates and stay apprised of how construction projects across campus may impact you.

"Tell Me About Yourself" - Interviewing Tips

“Tell me about yourself” – Interviewing Tips

If you have been selected for an interview, congratulations! You've made it to the next step of the hiring/acceptance process. An interview may be required for many jobs, internships, and graduate and professional school programs.

If you were invited for an interview, that indicates that your application caught their eye! The interview is typically the last step and will likely be the determining factor for you being accepted or hired.

That sounds daunting but if you take the following advice and prepare well you will be just fine!

The Basic Steps:

Do your research! Read the organization’s website and be sure you fully understand the mission and/or the services offered.

Gather your references! Identify three people who can speak to your ability to succeed and communicate with them before your interview.

Select Your outfit! Your clothing and accessories will speak about professionalism and workplace savvy.

Map your route. Find out the exact time and place of the interview. Make sure that the address and phone number are on hand. Take a print out of directions in case technology fails you. Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Don’t arrive too early; this can inconvenience the employer. It is okay to sit in your car.

Practice! practice! practice! Review questions you are likely to encounter and practice your response to each question. See a sample of some of the questions you may be asked below.

Common Interview Questions:

Tell me about yourself.

Why are you excited about this new opportunity?

What is your greatest strength/weakness?

Why do you want to work for this company/ Why do you want to join this program?

How do you handle ambiguity?

Do you have any questions for me?

“Tell me about yourself” is typically the first question you might be asked. This question does not ask about your likes and dislikes and what you like to do with your free time. You should prepare a thoughtful response that provides an overview of your skills that match the job educational background, and experience.

“What is your major weakness?” You can identify a weakness that will not significantly hinder you in the job, then highlight a strength that will compensate. You can also identify a weakness that could also be used as a strength. But, most interviewers are tired of hearing “I am a perfectionist” or “I tend to take on too much.” You can also point out something that the interviewer already knows but does not appear to be a stumbling block. For example, a low G.P.A or the lack of a specific technical skill.

“Why do you want to work for this company” can be answered by expressing what impressed you about the research you did on the organization.

Some other challenging interview questions are behavioral questions. These are known as “behavioral-based-interviews” (BBI) and the questions will pertain to a time when you used a certain skill. For example, “provide an example of a time when you used good judgment and logic in solving a problem.”

BBI questions can be answered using the STAR Method.

S T– Situation or Task – describe the situation in detail.

A – Action – describe the action you took to remedy the situation.

R – Result – explain the result of the action. Make sure the result reflects positively on you.

One of the top skills interviewers are looking for is communication skills. The key to a successful interview is to be able to communicate your skills and accomplishments well. You should speak concisely, don’t let the interviewer zone out or lose focus because you are taking too much time trying to answer one question.

Make sure you ask questions throughout the interview and at the end when prompted. Questions are a great way to show your enthusiasm for the opportunity. If you have an upcoming interview, make an appointment at the Career Center to discuss interviewing skills. We can help you prepare to answer difficult questions and help you identify key ways to have a successful interview!

Check out the Career Center Career Guide and online workshops for more tips!
