2:30-4:00pm, Tuesday, 28 October 2014, ITE 325B

We describe a logic programming language that supports Horn clauses, random variables, and covariance matrices to express and solve problems in probabilistic logic. The Horn clauses of the language wrap random variables and matrices to express probability distributions and statistical correlations, a powerful way to capture relationship between identical distributions that are not independent. A salient feature of the language is a mechanism to implement statistical ensembles and to solve the underlying SAT instances of probabilistic predicates using quantum mechanical machinery. We exploit the fact that classical random variables have quantum decompositions to build the quantum mechanical observables. We establish the semantics of the language in a rigorous fashion by considering an existing probabilistic logic language called PRISM with classical probability measures defined on the Herbrand base and extend it to the case of quantum probability. In the classical case H-interpretations form the sample space and probability measures defined on them lead to consistent definition of probabilities for well formed formulae. In the quantum analogue probability amplitudes are attached to H-interpretations facilitating the model generations and verifications via quantum mechanical superpositions and entanglements. The well formed formulae of the language can be cast as quantum mechanical observables and thus providing an elegant interpretation for their probabilities. We discuss several examples to combine statistical ensembles and predicates of first order logic to reason with situations involving uncertainty.Further studies include extension of the semantics to temporal logic constructs using quantum dynamic evolutions.

Radhakrishnan Balu is a computational scientist with a research focus on application of quantum mechanics to computation, communications, Chemistry, Physics, and biology. He has been working at the Army Research Lab since 2007 and uses D-wave system, a quantum annealer, and state-of-the-art quantum mechanics based software leveraging the high performance computing infrastructure for research. He has over 20 publications, including peer reviewed journal papers. He has five degrees in science and engineering, with a Ph.D in computational chemistry from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, an M.S in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.S in computer science from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

A: The most important thing I learned at UMBC was how supportive the UMBC community is regardless of issues you may be going through. I learned that no matter what I was going through I could talk to someone about it. I learned that they would be there for me even at my darkest times.

A: I worked with leaders of many faith groups at the Interfaith Center to develop a community between our organizations. The impact was that we could become closer friends regardless of the religions we follow. It helped facilitate discussions between members of our organizations that allowed for a better understanding of our various religions. Finally it allowed people to find commonalities with each other that they otherwise would not have seen.

A: The UMBC community is unlike anything else I have ever seen. You will not find a community that allows you to truly be yourself without feeling odd or out of place. UMBC is the only place where you can walk to class and find so many people smiling at you. For someone who struggles to go one more day, It means a lot.

The University System of Maryland encompasses 12 institutions, including UMBC, and two regional higher education centers. It employs more than 14,000 faculty members and 20,000 staff members, and owns almost 1,000 buildings. Its annual operating budget is more than $5 billion. There are more than 168,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions. But only one of them gets to participate directly in the decisions of the Board of Regents, the system's governing body. Three times in the past twelve years, that one student--the Student Regent--has come from UMBC. Could you be next?

UMBC Establishes Adobe Campus Site License

<Tagline>Adobe Creative Cloud now Available through myUMBC</Tagline>

This allows the use of the Adobe products on all institutional computers and includes a work-at-home provision for faculty and staff.

One challenge we had is that the contract could not go into effect till August 25th. As a result, we worked closely with Adobe to prioritize getting the software ready for the start of classes in UMBC instructional labs. The software is now available to download to faculty and staff desktops on the myUMBC software downloads page.
DoIT Organizational Leadershop Changes

Over the last year, we’ve been reviewing the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) organizational structure and focusing on building a broad and strong leadership team. As part of this effort we have looked at how our staff’s duties have changed over the last few years. At the same time, we have seen a number of staff leave to take new positions (Mike Carlin and Jesse Beauman left for UNC-Charlotte) or through retirement.

As a result, there are a number of changes that have taken place in DoIT and we want to update the community on these changes:

Arnold Foelster is now Director, Student Administration. Arnold is focused on operating and supporting our administrative systems used by students and faculty.

Stacy Long is now Director, HR & Finance Systems. Stacy is focused on operating and supporting our administrative systems used for HR and Finance.

Kevin Joseph is now Director, Business Analytics. Kevin oversees the technical implementation and operation of REX and ImageNow.

Todd Haddaway is now Director, Identity & Database Systems. Todd oversees the technical implementation of Identity Management and our Oracle Database Management Systems.

Tony Finneran is now Manager, Finance Systems. Tony is the lead on pre-award and post-award grants management and finance.

Kashka Donaldson is now Coordinator, ImageNow. Kashka oversees the work on ImageNow.

Damian Doyle is now Interim Director, Enterprise Infrastructure. Damian is responsible for the network, servers, storage and high performance computing.

Andrea Mocko is now Acting Coordinator of our Technology Support Center (TSC).

I want to congratulate all those listed above and thank them for all they have contributed to the success of DoIT and UMBC.

The DML is located on the second floor of the Library near the Honors College. The DML provides the UMBC community with access to A/V equipment as well as space to record. In addition, the DML has dedicated computer workstations for working with audio and video files. These work stations include access to Final Cut Pro and other software needed for audio and video editing. A full description of the equipment and spaces is available on the DML site.

The DML equipment can only be used in the DML space. Manuals and Quick-start guides are available for students to use. The DML assistants can provide basic instruction but overall the DML is self-serve.

If anyone will be sending students to the DML to complete particular assignments, please feel free to let Jodi Hoover know ahead of time.

With funding provided by the AOK Library, DoiT and the New Media Studio the DML has been able to start a modest equipment loan program. Equipment ranging from DSLR cameras to portable projectors is available for check out for three days at a time. Equipment must be checked out from and returned to the Library Media desk. A full description of the available equipment and the loan policy is available on the site.

The DML will not be adding new types of equipment to the program but they will be adding 4 more Canon T3i's and 3 more tripods. However, if you have suggestions for the types of equipment you'd like to see in the future, you could contact Jodi Hoover.

As of now, the DML is not providing a loan service for personal equipment on reserve for a specific class.
