DoIT Taking Steps to Protect Sensitive Data on our AD server

Over the weekend of May17-18, DoIT will be copying files found on our Active Directory (AD) servers that have sensitive information in them and encrypting those files and storing them in a special location. DoIT will be glad to work with anyone that requires access to these files for their work or scholarship, we ask you submit a help request ticket or email security@umbc.edu. Before giving you these files back we will have one of our staff contact you and go over procedures for how to safely store and work with files that contain sensitive information in a way that protects the university and individuals.

We want to thank everyone for your cooperation to date, as DoIT has been working with departments to remediate other places that have this information we have seen great cooperation. We very much appreciate the way the UMBC community has supported the efforts to better protect the information of our students, alumni, staff, and faculty. We know this is abrupt but felt that getting the data in a secure state was of the greatest importance.

Below is some information to explain this further.

Why is DoIT removing these files from AD at this time?

Due to the data breach at UM-College Park, the Regents have instructed all institutions to take additional steps to identify and protect personal information, such as SSN, from being released. The Regents have asked that campuses undertake an inventory to find where this information is stored and take all appropriate measures to protect this information. Under Maryland law, file encryption is one of the recognized measures for protecting information.

Why the sense of urgency?

Over the years, DoIT has consistently increased space for users and departments in our Active Directory environment. The totality of the number of files makes the Active Directory (AD) server critical to protect. Because we feel most of these files were used in the past and most will not be needed immediately, we feel acting quickly is the best course of action to ensure we are protecting the university and each others information.

What kind of files are being scanned?

The software that we have scans word, excel, pdf, and images looking for SSN's. Most of the files it will find are old reports dating back many years ago when SSN was regularly used. In many cases, the files may contain on a few SSN's in them.

How can I find out what files were taken from my account?

Please submit a ticket, http://my.umbc.edu/help, and we will send you back the list of files associated with your names. If you don't notice any files missing it is likely the files we protected were no longer needed.

How do I get access to my files with SSNs in them?

You should submit a ticket through http://my.umbc.edu/help, we will have someone work with you go over the best way to do this. If you have a time critical issue, please note that in the ticket and we will expedite this.

What will I do if I need to do if I regularly deal with files that have SSNs in them as part of my job?

There are options available (encrypted hard drives, UMBCs Box.com service) for securely working with these kinds of files. DoIT will sit down with your staff and understand what your needs are and come up with a solution that meets your units needs but at the same time ensures you are protecting the information and the university.

Will you continue to scan for sensitive files in my account?

Yes. We intend to run the process on a regularly basis and scan, at least monthly, all files on Active Directory and remove and encrypt files with sensitive information in them..

Will DoIT delete these files at some point in the future?

There are no immediate plans to do this right now. Our plan is to work with units over the next fiscal year to review the files and discuss the best ways to safely handle sensitive data. As part of that process we will ask departments if there are any files that can be safely deleted.

New welding method pioneered in the UMBC MicroMaterials Lab

<Tagline>Nimer grabs the cover of Advanced Engineering Materials</Tagline>

UMBC Mechanical Engineering researchers Sal Nimer and Prof. Marc Zupan, in collaboration with Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division scientist Dr. Jennifer Wolk, are studying the effects of friction stir welding on the local mechanical properties of a Ti alloy. The research is characterizing and developing the next generation structural materials for Naval vehicle systems. Their recent work was has been featured on the cover of the journal Advanced Engineering Materials.

Micro-tensile samples were utilized as shown in the figure extracted from a friction stir welded (FSW) plate of Ti-5111 and mechanically tested to failure in order to measure local material properties. The experimentally determined mechanical properties are linked down to the micro-structural regions that develop during the FSW process as described by Marc Zupan and co-workers

This work presents microsample measured mechanical properties of a friction stir welded (FSW) plate of Ti-5111. Property measurements and fractographic deformation observations were made as a function of discrete locations within the weld [stir zone (SZ), boundaries, base metal (BM)]. Properties in the longitudinal direction are compared to transverse measurements made at the same locations. Compared to the BM the longitudinal direction shows strength and ductility increases throughout the weld. The outer SZ showed mechanical properties in the longitudinal direction to be similar to the SZ properties in the transverse direction. These observations and measured properties serve to link the local material properties to the complex flow, heat, and deformation imparted to the material during the FSW process.

Sometimes, the strongest legacies arise from the humblest beginnings. For UMBC’s rugby team – one of the oldest clubs on campus – it all began with a bag of chips, a few cold ones, and a group of determined guys. On May 3, the team proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary – a true legacy for UMBC and the ruggers.

Andrew Gaither ‘94, history, a current rugger and member of the Alumni Association Board, is overwhelmed and honored that the team has lasted this long. “I don’t think anybody thought we’d get this far,” says Gaither. “Having endured 30 years and seeing what it was and what it is now is kind of amazing – I’m looking forward to the 50th.”

An Anniversary to Remember: UMBC Rugby Celebrates 30 Years

The story begins back in 1984 when the rugby team first started and became part of the Potomac Rugby Union (PRU) – the official governing body of all rubgy for the areas of northern Virginia, D.C., Maryland, and parts of Pennsylvania. It was in 1992 that the first alumni game was held at UMBC. Gaither explains that what started as small and simple has turned into their annual Alumni Weekend featuring a match, fellowship, and the “Best Damn Awards in All of Rugby.”

Gaither talks of the levels of fraternity and community that most people don’t understand. “I have a lot of rugby brothers,” Gaither says. “I always say to the younger players, ‘Look around. These guys will be here with you and for you in 20 years.’” For many, this camaraderie is what rugby is all about.

There’s something else special about UMBC Rugby: the Haud Collumi Scholarship. It’s the only scholarship formally endowed by an athletics alumni group and was named after the famous pre-game ritual of the Dance of the No Neck (Haud Collumi in Latin). Since 1984, the ruggers take part in this dance before every single game. The exact origins are unknown, but it’s a part of tradition; and for the rugby team, tradition is just as important as camaraderie.

“It’s a great feeling to know that you’re helping your brothers get to the next level,” Gaither remarks.

The motto of the rugby team is one that speaks to the culture of their sport: “For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother (Henry V, Act 4, Scene 3).” There is a sense of brotherhood formed on the field that will last for years to come. The 30th anniversary for UMBC and the ruggers is a huge accomplishment and Alumni Weekend was nothing short of phenomenal as these brothers came together to play, sing, dance, drink, and be merry. The whole thing was a field day (pun intended)!

In this tortuous time, students everywhere are searching out the perfect snack that will give them the super boost to power through.

What’s your vice? Is it something sweet? Salty? or maybe Flamin’ Hot?

As you go about your epic quest, remember that not all snacks are created equal. Last November, a news story broke about how eating bags upon bags of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos could send you to the E.R.

And Just this week, “Hart of Dixie” star Rachel Bilson let everybody know that she used to frequently binge on the spicy snack… but not without digestive consequences.

Of course, they’re pretty dang delicious.

And who can forget this song, ideal for singing along to while munching down on the bright red snack during a study break?

We know it’s hard. Just be careful out there… moderation, right?

To all the snack searchers – happy hunting and good luck on finals!
