For Immediate Release:

The Government Contracting Institute Announcing a Class Outlining the Federal SBIR/STTR Small Business Programs

Speakers from NIH and DHS discuss the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs in new class from the Government Contracting Institute.

May 8, 2014 – Baltimore, MD – The Government Contracting Institute, sponsored by TargetGov and bwtech@UMBC, introduces a new class covering the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The class, called “How the SBIR/STTR Program Can Help Grow Your Business” will be held at bwtech@UMBC’s South Campus on May 27, 2014. Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be an integral part of the class instruction.

The SBIR/STTR programs promote small business innovation and profitability while simultaneously meeting the government’s research and development needs. Every year, small businesses receive millions of dollars in SBIR/STTR funds for research, development and commercialization purposes. This course will provide attendees with an overview of the SBIR/STTR programs; funding sources and eligibility requirements; best practices in SBIR/STTR proposals writing, involvement, and commercialization; and a discussion of how to protect your company’s legal interests in either program.

Instructing the class are Frank Barros, with the DHS SBIR Program, and Robert Vinson, with the NIH SBIR/STTR Program, who will provide insight into how the Government Agencies view and operate these programs.

“Innovative businesses can find funding through the Federal SBIR and STTR Programs to develop ideas, products and services that positively affect health, security, military and even space operations,” said Gloria Larkin, President of TargetGov and Founder of the Government Contracting Institute, “Providing this class through the Government Contracting Institute gives attendees expert instructors as well as direct contacts into the agencies themselves.”

Another instructor is Jerry Alfonso Miles, Esq., a lawyer who assists companies in complying with federal acquisition regulations, mitigating proposal risks, protesting bids, defending against government investigations, completing mergers and acquisitions, responding to government auditors, and resolving prime and subcontractor disputes.

Concerning the class and the benefits it provides, Jerry Miles said, “The SBIR and STTR programs are a central way for innovative firms to achieve funding and ultimately, commercialization of their ideas. Our program will provide up-to-date insight into the rules and procedures for going about getting your company’s next idea funded and into the marketplace at a profit.”

bwtech@UMBC Research & Technology Park is helping to organize and support this new training class.According to Jennifer Reynolds, bwtech’s Director of Venture Creation, “The direct involvement of agencies such as DHS and NIH to provide outreach to our business community is invaluable.” She adds, “Access to SBIR/STTR programmatic information and training is vital to early-stage and emerging companies who may need guidance on how best to approach and prepare for such funding opportunities.”

For more information about the SBIR/STTR Training from the Government Contracting Institute please visit www.GovernmentContractingInstitute.com, email GovernmentContractingInstitute@TargetGov.com, or call our office at 443-543-5067.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the 9th Annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction hosted by our Chapter of Young Alumni. By attending the event, you helped us raise more than $6,500 for student scholarships. In fact, since 2009, together we’ve raised almost $25,000 to support UMBC students.

We’re also grateful to our generous sponsors, whose contributions came in at nearly $7,000 this year. Without their support, this event would not be possible.

We loved seeing you all there and hope you had as good a time as we did! We’ve shared just a few photos from the event below, but we hope you’ll check out our full gallery on Flickr.
