Argh! Weird browser bugs, inconsistent CSS/JavaScript support, performance issues, mobile fragmentation and complicated nuances such as device pixels, viewports, zooming, touch event cascade, pointer/click events and the 300ms delay. To make sense of it all, we created The Mobile Web Handbook, a new practical book by Peter-Paul Koch to help you understand technical issues on mobile and deal with them effectively.

We have all been there. With Responsive Web Design becoming a convenient strategy for device-agnostic design, we keep running into annoying technical issues that all those quirky (and not so quirky) mobile browsers are raising so very often. However, fixing these issues can be quite easy — once you understand exactly why they come up.

The book will be useful for mobile strategists, developers, designers, and everybody willing to better understand the intricacies of mobile — both technical and market-related. Whether you want to get a better picture or dive deep into common browser bugs on mobile, this is just the book you need.

250 pages. Written by Peter-Paul Koch. Reviewed by Stephanie and Bryan Rieger. Designed by Stephen Hay. Shipping starts late June 2014. Get the book.

Why This Book Is For You

Developing websites for mobile is pretty much the same as it has always been, but it does require you to learn a few new things, and some of them are quite confusing. In Mobile Web Handbook, you’ll learn to:

Make sense of the mobile value chain of operators and device/OS vendors,

Distinguish between different mobile/proxy browsers and ongoing browser developments,

See through the complicated browser situation on Android devices,

Understand CSS pixels, physical pixels, device pixels,

Make sense of layout viewport, visual viewport and ideal viewport,

How zooming works and why page zoom is different than pinch zoom,

The intricacies of the meta viewport and related CSS/JS properties,

How to deal with technical issues of touch events in JS,

Understand the touch event cascade and its bugs,

Handle 300ms delay, pointer events and the click event,

Fix common bugs caused by
position: fixed
,
overflow: auto
and
background-attachment
,

Set up a device testing lab and test on mobile,

Reconsider outdated development practices,

Adjust expectations for mobile networks and latency.

As a result, browser vendors had to perform some sleight of hand in order to make sure desktop-optimized websites also display decently. They split the viewport, which on desktop means the browser window, into three. What are these viewports and why do we need them? By discussing pixels, viewports, resolutions, the meta viewport, media queries, and related JavaScript events and properties, you’ll gain some insight into how mobile browsers (and web developers) deal with the fundamental problem of the small screen.

Summary • Mobile devices generally use touchscreens, and support a new set of touch events to monitor user actions. At first sight, touch events seem to be roughly the same as mouse events. What are the differences? How do they work? Do we need separate events for each interaction mode, or can we merge mouse and touch into one, as Microsoft wants? It is quite likely that future new web-enabled device classes such as TVs, cars, or even fridges, will bring new interaction modes and a new set of events. How do we prepare for them? That’s exactly what this chapter is all about.

Woe to GMO in VT

Little Vermont is tucked way up there at the tippy top of the U.S.A. Despite its diminutive stature (it’s the 6th smallest state by land area and the 2nd smallest by population)…

It likes to peep up.

The state was the first to abolish slavery, the first to adopt public education, and the first to legalize same-sex unions. Social pioneering is like a favorite pastime for Vermonters.

Now, pioneers are pushing GMO (genetically modified organisms) labeling. Last week, Vermont became the first to pass a bill that requires foods that contain GMOs to be labeled as such.

There has been much debate in recent years over the safety of GMOs. Supporters say they at least deserve to know what they’re eating.

Critics say there is nothing to worry about and that GMO labeling creates unwarranted paranoia.

The real question is if Vermont has the resources to stand up to big businesses like Monsanto that are likely to sue.

California attempted and failed to pass an anti GMO referendum in 2012. The money from big business was blamed for dissuading voters. They claimed limiting GMOs might raise food prices, which, by the way, is possible.

However, the bottom line is: we still don’t know if GMOs are bad for us.

Do we take the risk? Is there a risk at all? What do you think?

After all what is Canada known for? Moose, snow, frostbite?

New statistics now reveal the joke should be on America.

Last week, the New York Times reported that after-tax incomes of the Canadian middle class now exceed those of the United States.

That’s right…middle class Canadiens are richer.

From 2000 to 2010, median income in Canada rose by 20 percent while remaining virtually flat in the United States.

It would appear that decades of rising income inequality in the United States is beginning to chip away at our standing as the shining example of the social harmony of free market capitalism.

In fact, free market capitalism is itself under attack. A new book challenging its merits has rose to the top of the Amazon best-seller list.

Capital in the Twenty-First Century, a 700-page manifesto written by French economist Thomas Piketty, argues against the consensus view that capitalism tends to promote greater equality.

Though Piketty’s warnings apply to economies around the world, inequality is proving to be an accelerated trend in the United States. One reason for this is that Canada and European nations redistribute income much more aggressively than the United States.

As Stephen Colbert put it:

How is Canada’s middle class doing so well? I mean they’ve got socialized medicine, subsidized childcare, and high taxes for the rich. I mean it politely boggles the mind!

Should we be taking a page from Canada’s playbook?

As it’s become gravely clear over time, the Internet is hardly a bastion of liberty.

The NSA has proved that no one’s web excursions are completely safe from prying eyes.

Not even global leaders. Just ask Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, whose private emails were targeted by the spy agency last year.

That may be why Rousseff is fueling the effort to make Brazil the first nation with its own Internet Bill of Rights.

An admirable effort, for sure. But other nations might not have such impetus to protect the privacy of their webizens.

And it hardly stands to reason that the US will renege on its own surveillance programs just like that—or anytime soon.

So, will this really prove a boon in online freedom?

Novel Ideas Find Success at Inaugural CBIC

<Tagline>Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition Winners Announced</Tagline>

On Thursday, April 24th, a full house of supporters turned out for the inaugural Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC). Coordinated by UMBC’s Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, and made possible by a generous gift from alumnus and serial entrepreneur Greg Cangialosi, the CBIC offers students an opportunity to experience the process of planning a start-up business.

As the members of the teams arrived, a blend of confidence and nervousness filled the air. Eight (8) teams were selected out of 29 applicants to share their business ideas with a panel of three judges, John Cammack, Hugh Evans and Vince Talbert, all successful entrepreneurs and members of the angel investment group The Baltimore Angels. Teams were comprised primarily of UMBC undergraduate and graduate students, and each was paired with a business mentor to help them further develop and polish their idea prior to the final competition.

Stakes were high with cash awards of $5,000 for 1st place, as well as membership to Betamore, a Federal Hill based incubator and educational facility co-founded by Cangialosi.

First place went to Kyran Richardson and Percy Addo for their development of InSource, a web-based space that brings skills together with people. InSource helps students and faculty know what skills students have so finding a partner to
work on a project, research, or company is easy and seamless. Richardson said the idea came about when he and his roommate were trying to find students on
campus to collaborate on some business ideas they had, but due to a lack of
connections they were unable to find the skills they required. Knowing there is
an abundance of talent around, they wanted to make the matching process easier in the future. When asked about the experience of participating in the CBIC, Richardson and Addo said they were “humbled by winning first place while
competing against some of the most innovative students at UMBC.”

Second place went to Ethan Steininger for his company Compared Care whose mission is to make the healthcare world more transparent. There is a large geographical disparity within the healthcare industry and the same medical procedure will cost significantly more in one area vs another. ComparedCare.com will allow users to upload several variables to help them locate the best alternative. According to Steininger, “The CBIC was the ideal experience I needed to get started in entrepreneurship. It helped to validate my idea of Compared Care and placing second made it seem more legitimate. My mentor, UMBC alumus Andrew Pollack, was a perfect match and I will continue to communicate with him throughout this startup process.”

Third place went to Markus Proctor and his team consisting of Walter Pearson, Kimberly Hodges, and Harjit Singh for their company, EduPal, which is working to revolutionize students’ study habits and improve planning by creating an online tool to help them manage their time more effectively. Markus commented, “Being a part of the CBIC was definitely an exciting and memorable experience. The atmosphere was amazingly positive and I enjoyed networking with some of the brightest entrepreneurs on campus and in the region. Having the opportunity to share my passion with students, faculty, and members of The Baltimore Angels was worth every hour of practice."

Participation in the competition is just the first phase of the business education the winning teams will experience. By far the most important part of the CBIC will be what comes next, the involvement in Betamore programming and events which will provide valuable connections to the Baltimore business community.

Following the event Cangialosi said, “I am so proud of all the students who participated in the competition. It was exciting to see that innovation and the
entrepreneurial spirit is running high at UMBC! I look forward to the next competition and taking it to the next level.”
