MCASA Resources for Workplace Protections/Rights in the State of Maryland

Hello! We were asked by a community member to share out this information regarding workplace protections for LGBTQ+ employees in the state of Maryland. Please see below:

__________________________

I hope this email finds you well. The mission of the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) is to help prevent sexual assault, advocate for accessible and compassionate care for survivors of sexual violence, and work to hold offenders accountable.

Using grant funding from the Maryland Department of Health to expand our prevention work with LGBTQ+ communities, MCASA partnered with FreeState Justice – a statewide LGBTQ+ advocacy organization that provides direct legal services, policy advocacy, outreach, education, and coalition building in Maryland – to create a free self-paced training module, called Workplace Protections, Legal Rights, and Resources for LGBTQ+ Employees. This module educates current and prospective LGBTQ+ employees on their employee rights and available resources to recognize and report workplace sexual harassment and sexual assault.

This self-paced training module addresses the following topics:

Key terminology, including a selection of LGBTQ+ identity descriptors, and terms related to workplace sexual harassment and sexual assault

Federal and State legal protections and how to take legal action

Where to turn for free legal assistance

Supplemental information and resources

When current and prospective employees learn more about their legal rights, options, and resources, they will be better prepared to enter the workforce and remain in the workforce because they will have the knowledge and tools to recognize and report workplace sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Increasing the economic empowerment of the LGBTQ+ community is a protective factor against sexual assault and other forms of harm. When employees feel safe and empowered, they are more likely to be productive and successful at work.

Please share our free self-paced training module -- Workplace Protections, Legal Rights, and Resources for LGBTQ+ Employees -- with your networks. Feel free to post this link on your website, send it out in newsletters, social media, or other forms of communication.

If you have any questions, please let us know. I can be reached at agaragiola@mcasa.org or info@mcasa.org and Freestate Justice can be reached at LPruitt@freestate-justice.org

    2025-2026 year.

Please take a moment to cast your vote via the link below. The ballots will be available until Thursday May 15th.

Learn about our Candidates below:

Co Presidents (3 candidates / 2 positions open):

My name is Sohna Sallah and I’m a rising senior! I am currently serving as secretary for the Wisdom Weavers and I think that I would be a good candidate for Co-President because I have some experience being apart of the E-board! I love the overall objective of the group which is to promote positive ideas about aging and engage with older adult populations in our community to form intergenerational connections through different outreach initiatives. I enjoy being a part of this community because of the positivity that surrounds all that we do and the people that I have met along the way. I would like to continue in this group as Co-President because I believe that I have some great ideas to bring to the table that I can use to help grow this group. Using the new leadership skills I’ve gained throughout my time as Secretary, I want to be able to utilize this opportunity to pursue my passion of community involvement and engage with others who have bright ideas and new perspectives. I hope to get the opportunity to become Co-President and I absolutely cannot wait to see how high the Wisdom Weavers will soar!

Hi everyone! My name is Rhea, and I’m a pre-dental student who has always had a deep passion for volunteering and giving back to the community. Currently, I volunteer at St. Agnes Hospital and serve on the board of several organizations on campus. Through these experiences, I’ve developed strong leadership and organization skills. Additionally, event planning is one of my greatest strengths; I love taking ideas and turning them into reality, whether that's a large event or a small meeting. I’m very detail-oriented and make sure every part of an event is thoughtfully planned so that everyone involved has a positive experience! As a pre-dental student, I’m always on the lookout for new volunteering opportunities, conferences, and other helpful resources to share with my peers. I’ve already built a solid list of opportunities that I’m excited to bring to Wisdom Weavers! I have a genuine love for serving the community, which is a big reason why I chose the career path I’m on. I also deeply understand the value of supporting and uplifting the elderly population around us at UMBC. It would truly be an honor to continue that mission and serve as Co-President of Wisdom Weavers :)

Hello! My name is Rumsha Khan, and I’m passionate about aging services and advocating for the well-being of older adults. I’m currently pursuing a double major in Sociology and Management of Aging Services, and I plan to continue my journey with a Master’s in Social Work, specializing in care for older adults. I’ve had the privilege of working with the Baltimore County Government Department of Aging’s Ombudsman Program, where I visit residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities to support them with their concerns and ensure their voices are heard. It’s been an emotionally powerful experience—challenging at times, but deeply rewarding. We are all aging—it’s not just one population. That’s why I’m committed to helping build systems that are more inclusive, culturally competent, and responsive to the diverse needs of every individual as they age. I would be honored to represent these values through this position.

Secretary (1 candidate / 1 position open)

Hello, my
name is Colette Kalapala, I’m a sophomore in psychology on the premed track. I
am a good candidate because I have prior experience in leadership roles and
caregiving duties of older adults (this includes physically and
psychologically.) Throughout high school I’ve been in leadership positions
which will translate to how I will operate, with my team, this organization. I
also have shadowed and volunteered in a psychiatrist clinic. Meaning, I’ve seen
many older adults and seen the mental progression they go through. I also know
the various ways to help elders and engage with them cognitively. I also am a caretaker
for my own grandparents. I also take many social work classes which can help in
the way I organize and help with the events in this organization. I know the
way to ethically and properly contact elders and handle their needs. I also
will be able to network and reach people outside of the organization and many
other majors, and even churches who are willing to help with the elders. Even
though I’m applying to be a secretary it is important to be well rounded in
everything and I believe I am. With my premed, social work and personal
experience I believe I can be a great help to the org.

Treasurer

No Candidates

Historian (1 candidate / one position open)

My name
is Savae Carlson, and I am excited to run for the Historian position with the
UMBC Wisdom Weavers. I am currently a sophomore majoring in Management of Aging
Services and a part of the accelerated program. For this position, I am
prepared to document our journey as an organization and highlight the
contributions of each of our members, and I have previous experience
collecting and preserving items, like pictures. I also recognize the value of
keeping a record of our activities and accomplishments, which I believe will
help create a comprehensive scrapbook that tells our club's story for the year.
As the Public Relations/Webmaster chair for my sorority right now, I also have
a solid understanding of social media management. Additionally, I understand
how important it is to get the Faculty Advisor's approval before posting, and
I'm committed to making sure that our content coincides with the goals and
values of our club. Lastly, I am prepared to take minutes during meetings in
the potential absence of the secretary, write summaries of our events, and
maintain regular announcements about meetings on our social media platform(s).
Thank you for considering me for this position!
