Hilltop Researcher Michael Abrams Co-Authors Two Articles Published in Psychiatric Services

Michael T. Abrams, MPH, a senior research analyst at The Hilltop Institute, co-authored two articles published in the April 2014 issue of Psychiatric Services. The articles are both based on a study of low-income young adults (aged 18-26) discharged from an inpatient psychiatric event, a marker for serious mental distress. Identifying Young Adults at Risk of Medicaid Enrollment Lapses After Inpatient Mental Health Treatment discusses a study that identified antecedents to Medicaid enrollment lapses in the year following discharge. Such lapses are undesirable because they suggest absence of medical attention that is especially indicated in the wake of an inpatient …

Jeff Leips receives USM Board of Regents Award for Teaching

<Tagline>Leips has "led a revolution" in the Bio Dept, chair says</Tagline>

Jeff Leips receives 2014 USM Board of Regents Award for Excellence in Teaching
by Sarah L. Hansen

Jeff Leips, Associate Professor in Biological Sciences, was presented with the 2014 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Presidential Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony held in the University Center Ballroom on April 2, 2014. He was the only UMBC faculty member to receive a prestigious Regents Award this year.

Don’t be fooled by Leips’ relaxed demeanor and five o’clock shadow – he has been a game-changing force at UMBC for a decade. Leips “has implemented major changes in undergraduate biological science education focused on improving students’ quantitative reasoning skills, especially applied to biological problems,” said University Provost Philip Rous at the ceremony.

Leips spear-headed the creation of two new minors at UMBC in Quantitative Biology and Biomathematics. He also co-chairs the Undergraduate Training in Biology and Mathematics (UBM) program. In addition, Leips is a leader in creating student-centered experiences in undergraduate biology courses. He leads an HHMI grant-sponsored effort to create, implement, and evaluate student-centered modules in introductory biology classes at UMBC that emphasize quantitative skills.

“Jeff Leips has managed to lead a revolution in our department’s approach to teaching,” said Philip Farabaugh, Biological Sciences Department Chair. The revolution has “led us to be a much more student-centered teaching community. The students learn more deeply and with much more lasting results, but we faculty benefit as well,” Farabaugh said.

Sarah Leupen, UMBC faculty member and one of Leips’ colleagues involved in the module work, added, “We know that practicing biologists frequently use math to model the behavior of the system they're working on, and yet we rarely give students an opportunity to do this, or even to learn about it. Jeff is changing that.”

What inspired Leips to instigate these systemic changes? In 2004 he attended the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology at the University of Wisconsin with Phillip Sokolove, a UMBC Professor of Biological Sciences dedicated to excellence in teaching. “It opened my eyes to the different ways students learn,” Leips said. With support and guidance from Sokolove, he has been innovating in the classroom ever since. Rather than trying to cram as much content as possible into a course, instead he focuses on the most important concepts he wants students to take away with them, engaging the students in a variety of ways.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Leips leads a research lab focused on quantitative and evolutionary genetics in fruit flies. “Jeff is constantly thinking outside the box and asking questions from interdisciplinary points of view. He constantly encourages his research mentees to build their quantitative biology and statistical analysis skills,” said Mary Durham, one of Leips’ graduate students. “It is only natural for Jeff to integrate this passion into his courses and to do a stellar job at it.”

With so much on his plate, it would be easy for Leips to rest on his laurels. But that’s not his style. “I like what I’m doing. It’s part of our job – the teaching part probably affects way more students than anything I do in research. It’s unlikely I’m going to find a cure for cancer, but I’m going to affect students’ lives.”

In that vein, Leips believes UMBC and other universities need to improve teaching training for graduate students and faculty. If you are a graduate student thinking about a career in academia, “A large fraction of your job is going to be teaching. And you’re doing the students a disservice if you don’t treat it seriously,” he said. How to incorporate that training into graduate programs or the schedules of faculty who are already spread too thin is a tricky question, though.

Leips is a little embarrassed by the attention created by the award, but thinks that it is important that faculty be recognized for innovative teaching. “We should treat teaching like science,” he said. “Certain things you do will have an effect. You should be able to measure that effect, and alter the way you are teaching if students aren’t learning what you want them to."
