UNIVERSITY at BUFFALO - COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING (CSE) DEPARTMENT

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB) is one of the first Computer Science degree programs in the world (established in 1967) and one of the largest. With more than 35 full-time faculty members and over 850 graduate and undergraduate students, our graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and consistently ranks among the top 60 best programs in the United States.

CSE faculty are experts in their fields, and perform world-class and cutting-edge research. They include award-winning researchers and teachers (including 9 NSF CAREER Award recipients), members of prestigious editorial boards, and fellows of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAI. They have founded and direct major centers and laboratories devoted to big data analytics, biomedical computing, biometric systems, cloud computing, smartphones, robotics, computer security and information assurance, high performance computing, networking and distributed systems, multimedia databases and information retrieval, computer vision and information visualization, pattern recognition, machine learning, data mining, VLSI and computer architecture, and computational theory. CSE faculty were ranked 21st nationwide for attracting federal funding to perform state-of-the art computer science research in a recent survey by NSF.

Our graduates are highly sought after by academia and industry, and have been hired by major IT companies such as Microsoft, IBM, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and VMware. Our world-known graduates include: Carl Kesselman (co-inventor of Grid Computing), Robin Li (founder of baidu.com -- Chinese Google), Bruce Shriver (past president of IEEE Computer Society), and Max Nikias (provost of University of Southern California). Our Ph.D. graduates often obtain very competitive faculty positions at top 100 research universities.

The CSE department is located in a brand-new $75-million, state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory building. This building also features a cybertorium or smart auditorium, outfitted with the most sophisticated communications devices and smart technologies. Flexible research labs, classrooms, and meeting areas foster interdisciplinary work.

UB CSE has unique funding and research opportunities for Ph.D. students, with most admitted students receiving financial aid through TA, RA, or different fellowship programs. Please see the attached brochure and visit us at http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/ for more information, and feel free to send any inquiries to cse-gradinfo@buffalo.edu. The online application deadline for graduate studies at UB CSE is December 31st, 2013, and all supporting documentation is due January 15th, 2014.

About SUNY-Buffalo: The University at Buffalo (UB) is a premier research-intensive public university, a flagship institution in the State University of New York (SUNY) system and its largest and most comprehensive campus. UB’s more than 28,000 students pursue their academic interests through more than 300 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs. Founded in 1846, the University at Buffalo is a member of the Association of American Universities. (http://www.buffalo.edu)

About Buffalo/Niagara Area: The second-largest city in New York State, Buffalo is one of the most livable, lively, and comfortable places in which to live, work, and play. It’s an easygoing, inviting mix from great music and food to spirited professional sports teams, renowned architecture and cultural institutions, and top-notch entertainment. Situated at the eastern end of Lake Erie where the Great Lakes empty into the Niagara River, Buffalo is in easy reach of the Canadian lakeshore and Niagara Falls, the most accessible of the world’s natural wonders. The Buffalo Niagara region offers all of the amenities of a major urban area—without the headaches. The average workday commute is less than twenty minutes, which is the lowest out of fifty major U.S. cities. Affordable housing is widely accessible throughout the region, and a reasonable cost of living makes the good life possible on any budget. Most neighborhoods offer easy access to shopping, recreation, dining, and excellent schools. (http://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/)

Tip of the Week: 9 Tips to Help You Impress Your Interviewer

Once you master the small talk, here are some tips that will help you impress your interviewer.

    Work on your handshake: Don‘t offer up a flimsy or sweaty hand. Instead, when you meet with prospective employers or interviews, offer a firm handshake, with one or two pumps from the elbow to the hand. It‘s a good way to illustrate your confidence and start the interview off on the right note.

    Get serious: If you take a casual approach to the initial interview with a company, especially with a screening interviewer from the human resources department, you may be sealing your fate. Job seekers should treat every interview as if it‘s their one and only chance to sell themselves to the recruiter.

    Get the practice: If you find yourself being offered an interview for a job you are not really interested in, go on the interview anyway; you can make contacts for future job opportunities and get valuable interview practice.

    Be enthusiastic: Bring a positive attitude to your interview. Most interviewers won‘t even give a second thought to someone who has a negative presence or seems like they almost need to be talked into the job. “You‘re selling yourself, and part of you is the positive approach you‘ll bring to the office every morning,” says Alison Richardson, a recruiter for several New York financial firms. “That smile and friendly demeanor go a long way.”

    Ask questions: When interviewing for a new position, it‘s essential to have a handful of questions to ask your potential employer. Some questions could include: What do you consider to be the ideal background for the position? What are some of the significant challenges? What‘s the most important thing I can do to help within the first 90 days of my employment? Do you have any concerns that I need to clear up in order to be the top candidate?

    Tell a story: Your interviewer wants to know about your skills and experiences, but he or she also wants to know about you. Don‘t fire off routine answers to questions. Instead, work your answers into stories or anecdotes about yourself. People remember the people who are interesting. Prove your value by tailoring stories that address the main concern an interviewer may have: What can you do for us?

    Show restraint: During an interview, what you don‘t say may be as important as what you do say. As a rule, don‘t talk about money or benefits, especially during the first interview. You should already know if you fit the parameters. Don‘t badmouth about any of your past employers. Organizations don‘t hire complainers. Don‘t mention outside career aspirations or part-time jobs. Employers are looking for people who want to be part of their organization for the next decade and beyond.

Whatever you do, don‘t mention the need for an immediate vacation. First of all, you‘re making an assumption that the recruiter wants to hire you. Second, you‘re essentially removing yourself from the list of potential candidates. A job candidate we once interviewed was quick to announce that she needed time off immediately for a two-week honeymoon. We hadn‘t even offered her the job. Needless to say, we didn‘t. Certainly, there are scenarios in which you‘ll need to discuss pending scheduling conflicts, but the interview isn‘t one of them.

    Be memorable: Considering the number of job seekers interviewing for positions today, it‘s fair to suggest that many HR workers can hardly keep track of the differences. That‘s why it‘s important to do or say something that will allow you to stand out in the mind of your interviewer. It will strike a personal note and also provide a point of reference when it‘s time to recall the top candidates. Sure, the job candidate with “American Idol” experience we mentioned in the introduction had no real usable background for the job we were looking for, but he was memorable.

When 24-year-old Noreen Hennessy was looking for a job in marketing in a tough San Francisco job market, she mentioned to one interviewer that she recently ran in a Tough Mudder competition, a hardcore obstacle course that pushes one‘s physical and mental skills to the limits.

“She had a picture of her and some friends covered in mud on her desk,” Hennessy says. “I casually brought up the Tough Mudder, and she had a million questions. Our interview was pretty much over by then, but our conversation went on for another 10 minutes.”

Hennessy says she didn‘t get that job, but because of her interviewer‘s interest in the event, she put it on her resume as one of her interests and activities. “Every recruiter I spoke with after that would bring it up,” she says. “It became a major talking point and I think it said a lot about my grit and determination.”

Hennessy says she took some time off from the job search to assist a friend in setting up an event-planning business, which she says may or may not turn into a long-term job. “I‘m getting paid, working with people I like, learning a lot,” she says. “There are a million shades, but marketing is marketing. What I practice at the startup level will be something I can bring to the corporate level and it‘s certainly something else I can talk about during interviews.”

    Ask for the job: “Tell your interviewer you want the job — period,” says Dana Fulbright, an IT recruiter for Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. “So many people leave without ever saying they want to be hired. It sounds so simple, but it‘s true. Let your employer know that you want to work there.”

SVG Tabs (Using an SVG Shape as Template)

An excellent feature of SVG is that you can define a shape (or set of shapes) once, and then use it multiple times throughout a page. You can even apply different fills and filters and whatnot to the different versions. SVG templating, if you will.

Let's see if we can put that to good use by creating some tabs.

I learned this was possible through Oleg Solomka's article on Codrops. Clever stuff!

It works like this:

Define the shape (could be a circle or rect or polygon or any of the shapes, or a group of them wrapped in a
<g>
).

Give that shape an ID.

Hide that shape.

Use the shape where needed with
<use>
.

That looks like this in HTML:

<!-- TEMPLATE -->
    <svg width="100px" height="100px" viewBox="0 0 100 100" class="visually-hidden">
      <circle id="template" cx="50" cy="50" r="50">
    </svg>

    <!-- USE TEMPLATE SEVERAL TIMES -->
    <svg viewBox="0 0 100 100" class="circle circle-1">
      <use xlink:href="#template">
    </svg>

    <svg viewBox="0 0 100 100" class="circle circle-2">
      <use xlink:href="#template">
    </svg>

    <svg viewBox="0 0 100 100" class="circle circle-3">
      <use xlink:href="#template">
    </svg>

You can then reference those different uses of the template individually and do whatever you like to them. For instance use SVG gradient fills or SVG filters or whatever.

    You can hide that template by positioning it off the page or
display: none;
ing. I'd probably avoid trying to use it directly just to keep a nice separation of concerns.

Demo:

See the Pen Basic SVG Templating by Chris Coyier (@chriscoyier) on CodePen

Creating Tabs

I just got some paperwork back from a lawyer and of course it's all tabbed out with that classic file folder design.

That kind of shape has been attempted before with CSS. Round out tabs deals with the tapering of the shape down into the rest of the folder. Slanted tabs deals with the angled sides. But neither of them are perfect, it would be difficult or impossible to combine them, and, while clever, they are a bit "hacky" with the use of generated content and such.

Wouldn't it be easier to just draw the dang shape as a vector and use it? Absolutely, that's perfect SVG territory. And better, we can just use a template to define it once and use it over and over. That allows us to change the color and such without have to request a new asset, as well as look sharp no matter what size we end up using it at.

You could easily draw that shape in any vector drawing tool and snag the SVG code for it. If you need help with that, this article should be useful.

I went poking about stock photography sites to find some, just for fun, and I found some at Shutterstock that were about what I was trying to go for. I downloaded them and snagged the shape out of there.

Boiled down is basically this:

<svg>
      <path id="tab-shape" d="M116.486,29.036c-23.582-8-14.821-29-42.018-29h-62.4C5.441,0.036,0,5.376,0,12.003v28.033h122v-11H116.486
    			z">
    </svg>

The HTML

Since we would likely call tabs navigation and navigation is lists, here is what we would end up with:

<nav role="navigation" class="main-navigation">
      <ul>
        <li class="tab-1 active">
          <a href="#home">
            <span>Home</span>
            <svg viewBox="0 0 122 40">
               <use xlink:href="#tab-shape"></use>
            </svg>
          </a>
        </li>
        <li class="tab-2">
          <a href="#about">
            <span>About</span>
            <svg viewBox="0 0 122 40">
              <use xlink:href="#tab-shape"></use>
            </svg>
          </a>
        </li>

        <!-- etc. as many tabs as you'd like -->

      </ul>
    </nav>

We need to use
<svg>
in the markup there because that's how this works. We wrap it in an
<a>
because we intended to have the tabs be clickable/tappable links. We need the
<span>
because we intend to position the
<svg>
and text right on top of each other, with the text on top.

The CSS

We can use one of the wrapping elements as a positioning context. We'll absolutely position both the
<span>
and
<svg>
and give the
<span>
a higher
z-index
.

Presented in SCSS here, as the nesting makes it nicer to read:

.main-navigation {
      overflow: hidden;
      position: relative;
      padding: 0 0 0 1rem; /* push tabs back to right */
      ul {
        list-style: none;
        padding: 0;
      }
      li {
        float: left;
        width: 12rem;
        height: 5rem;
        margin: 0 0 0 -1rem; /* pull to left to overlap tabs */
        position: relative;
        &.active {
          z-index: 6; /* active one on top */
        }
      }
      a {
        position: relative;
        display: inline-block;
        width: 100%;
        height: 100%;
      }
      svg {
        width: 120%; /* tab shape should stick out past clickable box */
        height: 100%;
        position: absolute;
        top: 0;
        left: 0;
        z-index: 1;
        pointer-events: none; /* SVG eats clicks weird */
      }
      span {
        position: relative;
        padding: 1rem 0 0 3.3rem; /* position the text */
        z-index: 2;
        display: inline-block;
        width: 100%;
        height: 100%;
      }
    }

Now to change each tab's appearance, you can reference them by class name and change the
fill
. We also need them in reverse
z-index
order so the first one is on top instead of the last, which is easy enough to do by explicitly declaring them.

.tab-1 {
        z-index: 4;
        svg {
          fill: red;
        }
      }
    .tab-2 {
        z-index: 3;
        svg {
          fill: orange;
        }
      }

The Demo

See the Pen SVG Tabs by Chris Coyier (@chriscoyier) on CodePen

There is some JavaScript in there to activate the different tabs, which is at essence just changing a class name.

You might notice the tabs also have slight gradients to them. The interesting connection here is that you can declare that SVG gradient in the same
<svg>
as the original template shape, then fill a templated shape just by referencing the filter by ID.

<linearGradient id="tab-1-bg" x1="0%" y1="0%" x2="0%" y2="65%">
      <stop offset="0%" style="stop-color: rgba(136, 195, 229, 1.0);" />
      <stop offset="100%" style="stop-color: rgba(118, 160, 192, 1.0);" />
    </linearGradient>

.tab-1 {
      svg {
        fill: url(#tab-1-bg);
      }
    }

So basically you can think of your filters as templates as well, re-using them at will. Play around with the demo a bit too. There are some commented-out parts in there dealing with shadow primarily that you might like. What would be really cool is to make them flexy where tab size changes bigger and smaller as there is room available (the text as well) and then ditch them entirely when it's impartially small and swap out for a mobile navigation solution.

An excellent feature of SVG is that you can define a shape (or set of shapes) once, and then use it multiple times throughout a page. You can even apply different fills and filters and whatnot to...
