6 simple ways freelancers can meet people and make connections

If you are a freelancer or you work from home, then you might know exactly how it feels to be on your own little island. You’re cooped up in your office all the I time trying to get work done. If you’re anything like me, you only look up and go outdoors when your stomach tells you it can’t handle any more.

Maybe you’re not that bad, but it isn’t uncommon to feel like you sometimes need someone to talk to without reading and imagining how they sound in messages. Sometimes you need some real, live, organic interaction with people. It frees your mind, helps you with ideas and lets you realize you aren’t the only person on the planet.

It can sometimes be rough for you, especially if you enter a new town or new industry and have no contacts. It may also feel hard because you just don’t think there’s anyone out there with your interests. Stepping out the house and meeting new people is imperative for the designer who works from home. If you haven’t already figured out ways to do so, here are some tips to help you get a jumpstart on connecting and networking with people.

Meet-ups and groups

I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to be placed in an atmosphere just for the sake of talking to someone. Speed networking and mixers just don’t bode well for me. On the other hand, I love being part of groups where people get together because they are passionate or interested in the same things. It makes conversation easier because I already have a conversation starter.

Most people who work from home are the same way. And for this reason, I recommend you join a group of like-minded individuals to talk with. Groups with members are big on making sure people feel like they belong. Finding the right group doesn’t mean you’re on the outside looking in, but it’s about feeling connected to other passionate people.

The benefits of many organizations and groups can be great. You can learn something from gatherings, receive free and discounted perks and even become a mentee in a mentorship program. A good place to start finding groups is Meetup.com. You can search through certain categories to see when groups meet and what they are about. Other places to start are nationally recognized design and other related groups (such as advertising, technology, etc.).

Find events and conferences

Maybe you are okay with speed networking and mixers. There are tons all over the world and it seems like those type of events won’t stop anytime soon. Maybe you want an event with a little more substance that caters directly to you. Fortunately, there are many ways to find that.

Meetup.com is great for groups and some events, but Eventbrite.com is even better for your local events. You can search your area in whatever category and find lectures, helpful get-togethers and more via Eventbrite. I found so many great events and conferences that I probably would’ve never known about had not been for Eventbrite.

Big design conferences happen all the time throughout the year. Lots of blogs and businesses put them on to talk about what’s going on in the world of design. While talking to people is not a requirement in any of these events and conferences, you’ll easily find opportunities to speak and interact with interesting people. It’d be wise to take advantage of such a thing.

Find an interesting person

If you’re more focused on quality over quantity, it may a good idea for you to find an interesting person in your area. Perhaps you’ve heard of them in the news and in the community. Or you may have stumbled across their work online. Many people are very easily approachable and welcome the opportunity to “talk shop” with other freelancers and designers.

Since I’ve been writing, people in my area (and other faraway lands) often send me messages just wanting to chat. Just recently, I got asked to discuss business ideas and freelancing over lunch. And what person in their right mind can deny free food? Reaching out to people you find interesting is wonderful because you should already have an idea of what draws you to this person — you already have things to talk about.

If all goes well, it’s going to be hard for that person to forget about you. And sending follow up emails is perfectly fine as well. One on ones are the perfect way to establish a connection and a relationship.

Take a class

Being a designer is almost synonymous with always learning. We go through so many trends in a year that we must learn and we are expected to know more and more about the next skillset over. As a print designer, you may always be asked about the web or mobile. As a web designer, you may always be asked about programming and databases.

As fun as it is to teach ourselves things or sit down and watch thousands of videos about stuff all day, it’s nothing like actually being in a classroom. You’re always in a room with someone smarter than you who can answer all the questions that video doesn’t even touch. And then there’s always someone you can try to teach to check if you really know your stuff.

Classroom settings are great places to build connections. Maybe you want to take some courses at a nearby college or university. Maybe your local library or some other organization offers quick little classes. Either way, taking classes is a great way to meet people and increase your skillset.

Get involved in the community

I’m a firm believer in the idea that if people work together, then they have to make connections and talk to one another. It’s impossible to work together without communicating! Civic organizations always need help with something somewhere. By getting involved you have the opportunity to practice your skills, do work that may be recognized by many people and make connections.

There are some groups whose sole purpose is to work on things for the community which are great places to start. But there are so many other great ways you can volunteer just by contacting people in your neighborhood. You get a chance to create for them and build trust in your work that can lead to paid work or referrals.

Take your work with you

A couple of months ago, I purchased my DSLR camera. I was so excited, I took it everywhere with me to take pictures of everything I saw. As a byproduct of this, people either came up to me and asked if I could take their pictures or asked me about how I was loving my camera and other photography related questions.

As designers, I understand how this type of thing can be hard, but propping your laptop open and doing some work at a nearby cafe is totally okay. Even sketching some things out on your tablet can get some people interested in whatever you’re doing. I’ve even seen designers and coders wearing fun little shirts that put them out there, referencing their skillset. You have to get a bit creative with this part, but sometimes making it known and making yourself attractive is all you need to get a person talking to you about work.

Conclusion

Think about the connections you’ve made that are strong today. Chances are you didn’t just shoot them an e-mail or shove a business card in their hands and hope for the best. You probably took the time out to make a real connection with that person. Maybe they were a classmate, colleague or just someone you met and kept in touch with. Networking and getting to know people doesn’t have to be a foreign concept because we’re freelancers and it doesn’t have to be put on a pedestal. Always remember that these types of things take time so go out there and meet some new folks.

Do you work from home and find networking difficult?
What do you think of when you hear the words “Ultimate Frisbee”?

Does the image of hippies tossing a plastic disk across a beach come to mind?

This image may have accurately represented Ultimate Frisbee in the past—but this is no longer the case.

The sport (yes, sport) is played by highly competitive and hard-working athletes who often suffer injury in the name of the game.

Ultimate has been growing and expanding rapidly across the U.S. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association ranked Ultimate as one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. In the past year, two professional leagues were established: the MLU and AUDL.

The sport has garnered enough attention that it is now aired on ESPN.

So what makes the sport unique?

First and foremost, it is self-officiating, meaning there are no referees. Sounds ridiculous, right?

Well, the ability for players to work out fouls with each other fosters the spirit of the game, such attention to sportsmanship is the basic philosophy of Ultimate.

It is also one of the only sports to encourage equal participation of both men and women. The game is often played co-ed.

Hopefully as the stigma and stereotypes of Ultimate Frisbee are shaken off, the sport can truly flourish.

Americans Dare to DREAM?

It seems today that the fiasco of Obamacare is absorbing all the oxygen in Washington.

But not long ago Immigration was the hot subject… and America seemed poised for an historic battle on the issue.

A few weeks back we mentioned how Americans want sensible immigration reform and how the SAFE Act didn’t seem “sensible.”

Now it appears Americans might be looking away from SAFE and towards DREAM. A new poll out this week suggests that a majority of Americans favor a path of amnesty and citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Let’s take a look at the numbers:

63% favor a path to citizenship

60% of Republicans, 57% of independents, and 73% of Democrats support this trajectory

61% favor the DREAM Act, which would allow for a path to permanent residency for illegal immigrant children on the basis that they attend college for two years or enroll in the military.

Not everybody is on the same page, however. The 18% that favor deportation are sure to put up a battle.

Only 41% believe immigration reform should be an immediate priority for the President to handle in the next few years. Americans want change, but it’s not at the top of our list. Does that mean we can expect nothing to get done soon?

It depends…

Will Obama add tackling immigration reform to his legacy? Probably only if healthcare reform works first…

Affordable Care Info for Families

<Tagline>What Students Need To Know</Tagline>

Parents: Please see the important information below that explains the Affordable Care Act (also known as "Obamacare") and how it affects college students. If you need further assistance, please call University Health Services's staff member, Ms. Cheryl Benitez at 410-455-8091 or the UHS Director, Jennifer K. Lepus at 410-455-3751.

What Students Need to Know About the Affordable Care Act

Compiled by the University System of Maryland Office of Human Resources

How are college students affected by the ACA?

Under the new law, most people over age 18 must have health insurance beginning in 2014 or pay a penalty. This includes nearly all college students.

The ACA provides affordable ways for students to get quality health insurance coverage that meets their specific needs.

Are there any exceptions to the ACA’s individual mandate that students have health insurance?

· There are few exceptions to this rule, and they include students:

Whose household income is so low that their family unit does not have to file federal income tax;

Who qualify for a hardship or affordability exception when they apply for coverage on their state’s health insurance exchange;

Who are members of a recognized Indian tribe, health care cost- sharing ministry, or religious group that objects to health insurance; or

Who are in the U.S. illegally.

· Check with your state’s health insurance exchange if you believe that you may qualify for an exception and do not wish to enroll in a health plan for 2014.

What if I live out-of-state?

· If you do not consider yourself a Maryland resident (think about where you pay taxes, have your driver’s license, etc.), you should look into the health insurance exchange in your home state. You can find information about your state’s exchange on the federal ACA website, www.healthcare.gov.

· When you consider plans in your home state, be sure to look for a “multi-state” plan that has a national or regional provider network that includes Maryland.

Do international students have to comply with the ACA?

· If you have a student visa and already have health insurance, no additional steps are required to comply with ACA.

· UMBC INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS who have F-1 or J-1 visas are REQUIRED by UMBC to have domestic (US) health insurance that meets UMBC requirements. Those requirements are as follows:

1. a minimum of $500,000 (US) coverage per accident or illness.

2. a maximum $500 annually $50 per accident or illness that you must pay before the insurance pays. This is a deductible.

3. a maximum of 12 months for which the insurance will not cover health problems that you had before buying the policy. This is a pre-existing condition.

4. a minimum of $25,000 (US) for you return to your home country if you were to become very ill while studying at UMBC. This is medical evacuation.

5. $10,000 (US) to return your body to your home country if you were to die while you are in this country. This is repatriation.

International students' accounts will be billed for the UMBC health insurance plan at the beginning of each semester that you are enrolled at UMBC. If you have health insurance from another source that meets these requirements, you MUST submit proof of insurance coverage to UHS at the beginning of each semester. The documents that you submit must show dates of coverage and well as a description of coverage that can be compared to the above-listed requirements. Proof of insurance coverage must be submitted in ENGLISH. After receiving your insurance information, UHS will determine whether or not your policy meets our requirements. If it does, the insurance charges will be removed from your bill.

If you have a student visa but do not have health insurance, of if your plan expires in the near future, you may be eligible to get coverage through the health insurance exchange in the state in which you live. Please check with healthcare.gov orMarylandHealthConnection.gov for more information.

How can I get health insurance under the ACA?

Under the ACA, employer health plans are required to allow children of employees to be enrolled under their parents’ coverage until they are age 26. If one of your parents has health insurance and you are under age 26, you should qualify as a dependent on your parent’s health plan. For many students, this is the most direct and economical way to get coverage.

UMBC offers a plan through Aetna Student Health. Aetna Student Health, working with UMBC offers a student-focused health insurance plan that helps protect students at school, at home, and while traveling or studying abroad. For additional information, go towww.aetnastudenthealth.com or call 877-437-6535 to ask about the UMBC plan.

If you do not currently have private health insurance, the student health insurance plan, or Medicaid and cannot enroll in a parent’s health plan, you can look to the new health insurance exchange in your state of permanent residence to find an affordable health care plan that meets your needs. In Maryland, this exchange is called the Maryland Health Connection. Visit

What is the penalty if I do not enroll in a health insurance plan?

In 2014, the penalty is $95 per individual adult or 1 percent of your income, whichever is higher.

Penalties increase annually after 2014. In 2015, the penalty will rise to $325 or 2 percent of your income; in 2016, these numbers increase to $695 or 2.5 percent of your income.

What will a plan on Maryland Health Connection or another state’s exchange cost?

The cost of a plan for an individual student through Maryland Health Connection depends on a number of factors, including your age and income. For example:

If you are financially independent and your income is less than $16,000 per year, you may qualify for Medicaid, not have to pay premiums, and have minimal out-of-pocket costs.

If your income is between $16,000 and approximately $46,000 per year, you will qualify for subsidies and credits for the cost of your insurance at Maryland Health Connection. For example, a graduate student in his/her late twenties who makes $20,000 per year would receive a credit of nearly $1,600 toward a health insurance premium, and could enroll in a high-deductible (Bronze) plan for a premium of approximately $50 per month, or a lower-deductible (Silver) plan for $70-$80 per month.*

If you are under age 30, you can enroll in a “Young Invincibles Plan.” This plan has a very low premium but high deductibles and other cost-sharing if and when you do use health services.

If you have a spouse, children, or other dependents, the ability to reduce your costs through Medicaid, subsidies, and credits increases dramatically. For example, a family of four:

May be able to enroll in Maryland Medicaid if the household income is less than $32,500.

Will be eligible for premium and out-of-pocket cost subsidies if the household income is less than $94,200.

For example, a graduate student in his/her late twenties with a spouse and child and a household income around $20,000 a year should be able to get either high-deductible insurance with no monthly premiums or a plan with lower deductibles and $40-$70 in monthly premiums. If that young family has an income of $40,000, it can expect to pay roughly $110 per month in premiums for a high-deductible plan, and $210-$250 per month for a lower-deductible plan.*

If you are an out-of-state resident, you will need to look at your home state’s health insurance exchange website for cost information. Plans and premiums on the exchanges vary by state.

How do I choose the plan that is best for me?

To choose a plan, you will need to consider your age, general health, the health of your dependents, health services that may be available on campus and paid for through student fees, and whether you have a regular need for health services.

If you are in good health and have no dependents, you may wish to consider a “Young Invincibles Plan,” which is available to people under the age of 30. These plans offer low premiums, but they have high deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.

If you have a chronic health condition that requires regular health care or prescription medications, or you have dependents, you may wish to consider enrolling in a plan that has higher premiums but low deductibles and low out-of-pocket costs. On the Maryland Health Connection, these are called “Silver” or “Gold” plans.

Help is available at the Maryland Health Connection to assist you in evaluating the many available plans. This help includes:

A telephone help line

Extensive web information, including online plan comparisons and cost calculators

Trained navigators at various locations across the state who can answer questions, explain individual plans, and walk you through the enrollment process

Additional resources will be available on campus. This includes trained navigators, who may visit campuses in November.

What are Young Invincible Plans?

Young Invincible Plans are catastrophic plans available to people under age 30. They are designed for healthy young people who do not anticipate needing many health services, but who want protection against having to bear the full cost of a major medical emergency. (In Maryland, the average cost of a three-day hospital stay is $30,000.)

· These plans typically have very low premiums, often in the $40-$60 per month range, but their annual deductibles can be several thousands of dollars.

On the exchanges, these plans must cover three primary care visits per year at no cost to the enrollee.

With the exception of the three annual primary care visits, you will be responsible for the full cost of all health services up to the deductible amount.

There are no subsidies or tax credits available for Young Invincible Plans. If your income is low, you may want to compare the subsidized costs of Bronze and Silver plans, which have lower deductibles, against the unsubsidized premiums of a Young Invincible Plan.
