Dresher Center hosts next humanities forum event 
As part of its Spring 2025 Humanities Forum, the Dresher Center for the Humanities will host the “Empathy Machines: Podcasting and the Public Radio Structure of Feeling” lecture on Wednesday, April 23, presented by Jason Loviglio, associate professor of media and communication studies. This talk will explore the migration of the public radio “structure of feeling” as it migrated into narrative podcasting over the last two decades. Register for the event here. 

Biological sciences seminar featuring Dr. John Hernandez
The department of biological sciences will be hosting its next seminar event “The Circuit Basis of Individuality in Motivated Operant Response for Ethanol,” on Wednesday, April 23, presented by John Hernandez of Brown University. More information on the event can be found here. 

The Annual Eckert Lecture on Health and Inequality series returns
The Annual Eckert Lecture on Health and Inequality lecture series returns on Thursday, April 24, with the “Recovering from the Opioid Epidemic in Baltimore and Beyond” lecture. This lecture centers on the multifaceted nature of the opioid epidemic with an emphasis on recovery efforts in Baltimore City and other Maryland communities. The panelists will weigh in on the nature and impact of the local opioid crisis, understanding and treating opioid addiction, and efforts to prevent opioid misuse. Learn more about the event here. 

UMBC faculty member part of upcoming BMA exhibition
Kelley Bell, associate professor of visual arts, will premiere her latest project “Fantastic Village” at the Baltimore Museum of Art as a part of the museum’s 2025 Baker Artist Awards exhibition, on display beginning April 27 through July 27. Bell was a 2024 recipient of the Baker Artist Award, which was created to support artists and promote greater Baltimore as a strong creative community. Analyzing The Impact Of Wildfires On Human Lung Cancer Through Molecular Homolog Identification In Drosophila

Exposure to wildfires has been linked to lung deficiencies, including lung cancer, due to air pollutants inducing DNA mutations. To better understand the genetic pressures wildfires cause toward lung cancer, we utilize a study of protein expressions in drosophila flies exposed to controlled smoke conditions. These controlled conditions in drosophila provide grounds for studying orthologous relationships caused by genetic pressures. Observing putative orthologs in drosophila in comparison with non-smoking lung cancer patients helps identify functional driver genes for lung cancer. Specifically, this comparative study analyzes functional genes at three stages: (1) Identifying orthologs of the mutated genes in the Drosophila flies within the Human genome, (2) comparing the mutation positions to determine if any mutational homologs are present, and (3) examining the conserved interactions in orthologs, called interologs, to determine if protein-protein interactions are conserved between the two species. Comprehension of how protein-protein interactions are altered from wildfire-induced mutations can aid in discovering therapeutic targets and establishing more robust lung cancer treatments. Additionally, this comparative model can be scaled to incorporate analysis of other model organisms and provide insights into different diseases.

Why did you choose to major in INDS?

I felt incredibly limited by the predetermined path that the information systems four-year degree plan had set. I felt as if I didn't have full autonomy in what I was learning and was able to pursue my interdisciplinary interest. Especially with my desire to code, program, create, and improve, I realized that I wanted to do so in the field of education. Thus, HCI (human-computer interaction) and ID/UX (interface design/user experience) became my primary academic and research interests. Media and communication are invaluable assets to this interface design, so I take classes in IS, education, and MCS to fulfill all aspects of what I initially thought I could never discover.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

I plan to conduct educational technology research abroad and apply to graduate school to earn my PhD while also working a job related to curriculum design and development.

Were you involved in any clubs or organizations? Did you hold any leadership positions? URCAD? URA? Off-campus internships? On-campus research experiences?
