Off-Campus Student Services’ new and improved website (www.umbc.edu/ocss) is up-and-running and has tons of information and resources about finding off-campus housing and roommates as well as navigating the technicalities of living off campus such as building productive tenant-landlord relationships. The answers to students’ FAQs can be found there and at OCSS’s housing-related events such as the “Off-Campus Transitions” workshop, recently held on April 10^th, where we addressed questions about security deposits and lease lengths. More events are coming!

If students are interested in finding roommates, OCSS is hosting a Roommate Social on May 10^th from 12-1PM in Lower Flat Tuesdays in The Commons—there will be food, fun, and, of course, opportunities to meet potential roommates. If students can’t make this event, UMBC’s official off-campus housing directory is another free resource for students to post and browse roommate ads—visit www.umbc.och101.com.

About the program:

The Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics announces the Undergraduate Mathematics Biology Training Program (ubm@umbc.edu) supported by the National Science Foundation. At the core of this program is the belief that modern scientific problems demand multidisciplinary approaches, and that cross-disciplinary training will accelerate discovery and prepare students to be scientific leaders in the 21st century. Our innovative program will provide two years of research training for undergraduates working on projects at the interface of biology, mathematics and statistics.

For student candidates:

The goal of this program is to prepare undergraduate students for graduate study and careers in biomathematics, biostatistics and fields that require a strong background in computational approaches to biological problems.

A film by Joe Tropea ’06, ’08, history, premiers locally at the Maryland Film Festival next week.  The Baltimore Brew covered the film in a May 1 story entitled “A fiery act of civil disobedience in Catonsville still resonates, 45 years later.”

“Hit & Stay’ tells the story of nine Catholic activists who protested the Vietnam War by burning draft files in Catonsville on May 17, 1968.  Tropea and fellow filmmaker Skizz Cyzyk tell the story using old footage, recent interviews with surviving members of the group and their supporters, images of war horrors, and the reflections of eminences of the Left such as Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, Bill Ayers and Amy Goodman.

Tropea undertook the six-year process of making the documentary after writing on the subject for his masters thesis.  “I had had no idea about the amount of strategy and coordination and about how all these things were connected,” he told Baltimore Brew.

“Hit & Stay” will have two screenings at The Maryland Film Festival. (Tickets available here.)
