2013 MIT Amgen-UROP Scholars Program Summer Research Program in Science and Biotechnology

Entering its seventh year, the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program invites undergraduates to participate in faculty-mentored summer research at MIT in the science and biotechnology areas.

Students admitted to this program (known as “Amgen Scholars”) will have opportunities to conduct research, analyze data, present research results, network with other undergraduates with similar research interests, and develop working relationships with MIT faculty mentors and other research staff.

Participation has many benefits. Amgen Scholars learn how to collaborate effectively in research settings while investigating areas of research interest within a specific discipline and gaining practical skills and knowledge for both graduate study and post-graduation careers. Participants become fully integrated in MIT’s summer research community, interacting with faculty mentors and fellow undergraduates while participating in research seminars and other networking events. Most importantly, Amgen Scholars become involved in exciting research and contribute to the advancement of science in an area of interest.

The Program also offers a competitive compensation package. Amgen Scholars working 40 hours per week for the nine week period will earn $4,600, based on an hourly wage of $12.78. Housing in a designated MIT residence hall and a $800 food allowance will also be provided.

Space in the the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program is limited; up to 25 undergraduates will be admitted for Summer 2013.

Tell Me

PC, Word 2010

  1. Click on the review tab at the top of the tool bar
  2. Down arrow  on the Language icon
  3. Choose set proofing language
  4. Highlight language and click ok
  5. Choose language  then begin typing paper or select all of the language area you want to review and then choose the proofing language

MAC, Word 2011

  1. Go to Tools at the top toolbar
  2. Choose language then begin typing paper or select all of the language area you want to review and then choose the proofing language

  • Located in Academic IV, B Wing, room 219
  • consists of 3 computer lab areas - 25 Dell Optiplex PCs with Windows 7, Word 2010, headsets with microphones; 10 Dell Vostro PCs, Windows 7, Word 2010; 10 MACs with OSX 10.7.4 with Word 2011, Adobe suite, Final Cut Express
  • smart classroom area for 25
  • 25 PC area and MAC area sometimes used for classes

The IMC's hours for Spring 2013 are:

  • Monday - Tuesday           9 am - 8 pm
  • Wednesday - Thursday   9 am - 7 pm
  • Friday  9 am - 4 pm

January and Summer hours are generally 9am - 4pm, M-F.  Please check back at this site for  schedule changes.

Congratulations to Ebiquity founding member Professor Anupam Joshi for his appointment as the Director of the new UMBC Center for Cybersecurity. The center will provide both Maryland and the nation with academic and research leadership, collaboration, innovation, and outreach in this critical discipline by streamlining UMBC's academic, research, workforce development, and technology incubation activities to advance the University's position as a leading research university in cybersecurity-related disciplines.

The center is made up of UMBC faculty and students from many disciplines, including Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Public Policy, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. It will expand upon UMBC's pre-existing Cybersersecurity efforts like the Center for Information Security and Assurance, and the Cync Program run by the Cyber Incubator@bwtech.

Progress on achieving the center’s educational goals is off to a fast start with two new major scholarship programs.

Professor Alan Sherman and Dr. Rick Forno received an NSF grant of $2.5 million over five years to fund 22 undergraduate, graduate and professional students studying Information Assurance and Cybersecurity as part of the of the Federal Cyber Scholarship for Service program.

In partnership with UMBC's Center for Women in Technology, the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity will also facilitate a new scholarship program called the UMBC Cyber Scholars Program. Set to launch this January, the scholarship program is funded by a generous $1 million grant from the Nothrop Grumman Foundation.

Diane Lee, Jill Randles and Jarrett Kealey from the Office of Undergraduate Education, along with Sarah Jewett from the Office of the Provost, presented “UMBC Transfer Seminars: The Future of Transfer Student Success” at the 19th National Conference on Students in Transition in Philadelphia on October 15.

The annual conference provides the opportunity to share and learn from each other the latest trends, initiatives, best practices, ideas, research and assessment strategies focused on supporting student success.
