attention uuuuuuuuuuuuuuumbc this is it: the premiere of i eat things radio for this fall semester.
to celebrate our triumphent return, we will be taping this special episode in a submarine, 4,000 below the surface of steely dan's headquarters over there in monkton there.
we are going to be opening the vault and releasing all of the good tunes and jams from mudcats, cupcake clan, king fuck, meatman, clunge dungeon, boner bros., among many other.
we're gonna make ALL that happen for you.
its because WE made the tunes. all of them. all of the music on this show is ours. we're talking stuff way back from the golden days.

UMBC Takes on Binghamton and Albany in Final Week of Regular Season
With one week remaining in the regular season, the UMBC women's soccer team finds itself in the running for one of the three remaining spots in the America East Championship � with Hartford, New Hampshire and Maine having solidified their berths. The Retrievers welcome Binghamton to Retriever Soccer Park on Thursday, Oct. 18 for Senior Night and travel to Albany for their regular season finale at noon against the Great Danes at the Turf at College Park. Day 3 - Persuasiveness or Power?
1 Corinthians 2:1-5
And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.
Reflection
There is an entire industry devoted to aftermarket performance parts for cars. You might buy a big spoiler to make your car look faster and maybe a new exhaust to make it even sound faster. But in the end, no matter how persuasive it looks or sounds, your car isn’t really faster at all. Paul challenges us to consider what we depend on as we minister. We don’t need fancy words, convincing arguments or specific personalities, but we have access to real power. We can know our crucified and risen Lord. We can live each day full of purpose and free of distractions, seeking to respond to God’s great love by loving Him and loving others. And seeing faith springing forth in others as a result of His power in their lives. This is the real power that we depend on as we minister and love this generation.
Response
Let’s pray that our faith will not rest on human wisdom but on God’s power. Let’s come to the cross once again with all of our worldly notions and dependences and confess that its all about Christ alone. May we resolve to know and depend on nothing else but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Let’s ask for the Spirit’s power as we minister to others and for hearts to be softened and turned to the Lord.

Kimberly Moffitt, American Studies, on Midday with Dan Rodricks
On Friday, October 13, Kimberly Moffitt, assistant professor of American studies, discussed the vice presidential debate on WYPR’s Midday with Dan Rodricks.
Rodricks opened the discussion by asking if the vice presidential debate mattered. Most viewers found the debate entertaining, but would anything that the vice presidential nominees said change voters’ minds?
“I do think this was a sideshow, but it was a pretty entertaining one for us all,” said Moffitt. “These are two individuals who do matter, but they aren’t the voices we want to hear most significantly in the election. They made a difference in terms of reenergizing, for both camps, this interest in what’s happening.”

Need a boost to reach your academic goals? Find help here!
So, you're through your first (and, possibly, second) round of exams and papers. Do you find that you're just not performing at the level that you think you should?
Whether you are struggling mightily with course material, or you are trying to maintain your 4.0 GPA, there are a number of places - in addition to your professors and TAs - where you can get some help!
Several Departmental Tutorial/Help Centers also offer help to students:
- Have a documented disability that impacts access to learning
- Be a first generation college student
- Have low income that meets federal guidelines
- Have a need for academic support

Advance Registration for Spring 2013 is rapidly approaching! This can be a very stressful time, but if you follow these eight steps, you will give yourself the best chance at having a great schedule!
1.
Find out when you will become eligible to register. Students become eligible to register for classes over several weeks, in order of descending credit totals (IOW, Seniors go first, Freshmen last). The Registrar’s Office publishes a Registration Timeline so that students can estimate their earliest date of registration. That timeline can be found
here.
2.
Figure out who your advisor is for your declared major. Each department is a little different in how they communicate that information to students: some send out an email to each student, some post the information outside their Department's main office, and others list that information in myUMBC. If you're not sure what your department does, you can always refer to the list of Departmental Advising Contacts maintained by the
Office for Acadcemic & Pre-Professional Advising.
3. Make an appointment for advising. If you have been assigned an advisor in your department, he or she may send or post instructions on how to do so. FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS! Ideally, you should schedule this appointment to occur before your earliest possible registration date.
4. Know your Major, General Education, University, and any other academic requirements. Ultimately, you hold sole responsibility for making sure that these requirements are fulfilled. Use your online Degree Audit – found in the “Advising & Student Support” section of your myUMBC – to help you track your progress.
5.
Prepare yourself for your appointment. At minimum, you should be able to tell your advisor what grade you are earning in each of your current classes, and which courses you plan to take in the next semester. If you are a little worried that you won't be able to answer all of your advisor's questions on-the-spot, try filling out an
Advising Appointment Preparation Worksheet. It includes the questions commonly asked by academic advisors, plus a space for you to write down any questions that you want to remember to ask during your appointment.
6. Attend your advising appointment. If you fail to show up for the advising appointment time that you’ve chosen, there is no guarantee that you will be able to reschedule an appointment that will occur before your Registration Eligibility date. This will delay your ability to register for classes, and possibly affect your ability to get into classes that you need/want to take.
7. Make sure that you have no other holds on your account – the most common of these are Financial, Health, and Judicial Holds. These items can be taken care of AFTER you meet with your advisor, but must be done BEFORE you can register for classes. Check in the “Alerts” section of your myUMBC account - that's the bell icon at the top of your myUMBC home page. If you have a hold that will prevent you from registering for classes, you will have a message posted there.
8. Register for your courses in a timely manner. Because students become eligible to register gradually, the longer you wait, the more competition there is for the classes that you want to get into. To give yourself the best possible choices for your schedule, register as early as you can!
Advance Registration for Spring 2013 is open to all continuing UMBC students who are registered for classes in Fall 2012. If you are a continuing UMBC student who is NOT registered in Fall 2012, you may begin registering for Spring 2013 when General Registration begins on November 27th.

There is a color printer in the Print & Copy center on the 1st floor. Color printing is available from all library computers - select 'LibraryColor' when starting your print job. Color printing costs $0.70 per page. Color printers are also available at commonvision in the Commons at The Communications Services Comm_Store in University Center.

Information sessions are a great opportunity to meet one-on one with company recruiters, to network, and to gather information on potential employers (and as a bonus, many employers offer food during their session). Information sessions offer students the chance to make a great, in-person impression.

Upcoming On-Campus Interview Deadlines - Fall 2012
On-Campus Interviews offer students a chance to conveniently interview for professional positions on campus. Employers travel to our campus for the specific purpose of interviewing preselected students for currently open positions. This is a great opportunity to interview with employers specifically interested in UMBC students and offers the advantage of a smaller applicant pool. Interviews take place during the fall and spring. The logistics (viewing positions, applying, signing up for interview time slots, etc.) are all handled via UMBCworks.
