Janel Thomas WISE Grads Vice-President Hurricane Chaser
Janel Thomas has a B.S. in Meteorology from  Saint Louis University and is currently pursuing her M.S. in Geography and Environmental Systems at UMBC (Advisor: Dr. Jeffrey Halverson).

Janel Thomas grew up in Herculaneum, MO; a small town on the bluffs of the Mississippi River known for its environmental controversy stemming from the location of the largest lead smelter in North America. This fueled her interest in the environmental sciences from an early age and guided her choice to pursue and receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Saint Louis University in 2010. During her undergraduate studies she participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) grant through the National Science Foundation (NSF) titled “Profiling of Winter Storms” where she flew in a research flight with NOAA/UCAR and gained field experience in operational meteorology. She is currently pursuing a M.S. degree in the GES department with a focus on tropical meteorology funded through JCET (Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology). Janel worked with her advisor Dr. Halverson on the Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) 2010, NASA’s joint earth science field experiment with NOAA and NSF where she operated the dropsonde instrument onboard NASA’s DC-8 aircraft. She flew 4 successful missions into Hurricane Earl during late August and early September, 2010. Her research extends from GRIP project as she is investigating the rapid intensification of tropical cyclones and dynamic processes involved; specifically focusing her thesis on data she collected from Hurricane Earl 2010. Janel also, just recently returned from another hurricane research field campaign titled Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) where she organized and led daily weather briefings for flight planning for the new Global Hawk unmanned aircraft that is investigating the genesis and intensification of tropical cyclones. She led a team of forecasters on site at the NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia where the team worked in collaboration with a board of NASA forecasters, officers, pilots, and an array of qualified scientists located in various universities across the country. She also assisted in education outreach by connecting with middle school students through live chats during flight days. Aside from working on research Janel loves to be creative. She likes to cook and design, whether it be jewelry, clothing, interior, web, flyers or posters, she spends her free time creatively putting new pieces together.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: Since Fall 2008 :)

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Vice President for Student Organizations (VPSO) of UMBC's SGA!!!

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Encourage students to see the infinite possibilities of their "undergraduate experience." 

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I was actually surprised I only have one on-campus role to list now haha! But honestly, I think that's what I'm loving most about the VPSO position. Not only do I get to be a part of an amazing organization (woot woot SGA!), serve on the Finance Board, and find myself surrounded with ambitious and talented people everyday, but I'm able to put my all past experiences to use by supporting the undergraduates at UMBC. Of course, student orgs are my passion.. so I feel incredibly blessed to work so closely with so many of them!

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: This is such a loaded question >_< I think the most important thing I've come to learn at UMBC is that no matter who you are or where you are in life, things may not turn out the way you planned - and that's okay! Over the last four years, I've been a fierce warrior in the never-ending battle of future career decisions, weighing responsibility and practicability with personal interests and talents...From med to grad to law to culinary to business to work to the arts to fed to private to non-profit....etc.... I've pretty much explored them all. Whether you're a take-life-one-day-at-a-time or a plan-everything-out-now type of person, allow yourself infinite chances to explore something new. Take advantage of the connections you make with other students, faculty, staff, and pay attention to what ISN'T being said your conversations. College is full of opportunities to learn, but even more importantly, college is where YOU as a person truly grow. What you will learn and how you will grow might just surprise you again and again.

A: New experiences, or even new insight into past events (sort of those "epiphany" moments!)

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I didn't think this was a little-known fact about UMBC until recently, but am I one of the only people who can recall the days when CFA and Sbucks was actually a study space??! Also, who else remembers when the dining hall (yes, D-HALL) went through a new makeover each week?

 Favorite spots on campus include: My new Walker Apartment, the Student Involvement Center (SIC) and SGA Offices, the dance studios in Fine Arts, and the Commons Fireside Lounge.

Until now, voters had little information to go on about the Dream Act’s likely effects, but a new report from UMBC researchers T.H. Gindling (professor of economics) and Marvin Mandell (professor of public policy) offers hard data on its economic impacts. “Private and Government Fiscal Costs and Benefits of the Maryland Dream Act” is a working paper funded by the Maryland Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (MIPAR) at UMBC. It asks how many students would benefit from the Dream Act and what the net economic impacts would be. The researchers also explore the fiscal costs and benefits to the state, county and federal governments under the Dream Act. A policy brief summarizing the paper notes: “The estimates from this analysis suggest that the net economic effect of the Maryland Dream Act will be positive, and the benefits will be substantial. Even if the only consideration is the fiscal effects on state and local governments, the impact of the Dream Act will be positive. The initial costs of the investment in education will be more than offset by increased tax revenues and lower government spending on incarceration and other government programs that result from a more educated citizenry.” The analysis distinguishes two broad categories of students who could utilize the Dream Act: undocumented immigrants students who would obtain more education because the Dream Act lowers the cost of education to them (estimated at 163 students per year); and those who would obtain the same education with or without the Dream Act, but who would pay lower tuition and fees at public institutions because of the legislation (estimated at 272 students per year). The researchers estimate that, at any given time, students who benefit from the Dream Act will make up 0.6% of the total number of students in Maryland public colleges and universities. “For most categories of students who take advantage of the Dream Act,” write the researchers, “the estimated total net fiscal plus private benefits are not only positive but large.” For each annual cohort of students who utilize the Dream Act, total net benefits to the economy are approximately $66 million in 2011 dollars. Arkansas sure knows how to stir up a racial controversy!

The state has come a long way since the forced desegregation of Central High School in 1957. However, two Arkansas Republican politicians, Jon Hubbard of the Arkansas House of Representatives and state House candidate Charles Fuqua,  have expressed some contentious opinions that many feel are reminiscent of the discriminatory attitudes of the 1950′s.

In his 2009, self-published book titled Letters To The Editor: Confessions Of A Frustrated Conservative, Jon Hubbard states the following: 

The institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.

He also argues that the integration of schools  set some white students back, because they:

dropped to the level of black students. To make matters worse the lack of discipline and ambition of black students soon became shared by their white classmates, and our educational system has been in a steady decline ever since.

In the book, Hubbard goes on to make other claims regarding black Americans and their history in America, but he argues that his statements were taken grossly out of context. He also accuses liberals of using the controversy to:

steer the conversation away from the real issues…that is why they try to make me and other conservatives spend our time defending ourselves against their false accusations, instead of addressing these real issues the people of this state desperately want answers or solutions for.

Hubbard insists that people should “read and judge for themselves” before forming their ultimate views on this matter, and we here at USDemocrazy encourage you to take his advice to make an informed decision. Despite his insistence that his perspective is not rooted in racism, many Arkansas Republicans are trying to distance themselves from Hubbard as well as Charles Fuqua, the other Arkansas politician under fire for controversial sentiments expressed in a book he wrote this year. In Fuqua’s own words: 

I see no solution to the Muslim problem short of expelling all followers of the religion from the United States.

So where exactly did he get the idea that this was even a problem in the first place? We have no idea, but according to Fuqua, there are others who are concerned about this so-called “problem:”  

I think my views are fairly well-accepted by most people.

Well…if by “most” people he actually means a small and rather bigoted fraction of the population, then yes, it may very well be that his views are accepted by the alleged “most” people.

Whatever he means by the phrase, it doesn’t seem to carry much weight in the opinion of many Arkansas Republicans, including state GOP Chairman Doyle Webb, who have been quick to denounce both his and Hubbard’s respective books. The state’s Republican House Caucus clearly stated the two men’s views are: 

in no way reflective of, or endorsed by, the Republican caucus.

But perhaps you have a different perspective.  Have one or both of the men’s specific statements been misinterpreted because they have not been considered within the larger framework of their arguments? Or are both men completely out of line even if the respective contexts of their statements are evaluated?

Do you have retriever fever! Have you noticed ALL the black and gold all over campus today! Homecoming is right around the corner and we are pretty excited!

Students in each community have gotten together to show their spirit and love of UMBC and their community by creating a banner, you can vote for your community banner here: Homecoming Spirit Competition. The community winner of the People's Choice award determined by the voters will win  pizza party AND a trophy! More details on that are to be announced when the winner is announced!

And while you’re there you can also vote for best office decorations and student org banners! Many student organizations and offices across campus took part in this healthy competition including Residential Life and the Resident Student Association!!!  Check out RSA’s banner here: RSA Homecoming Banner
