Day 3 - The Promise of the Spirit is Fulfilled

Acts 1:4-8, 2:1-4, 4:32-33

4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

Reflection: As usual, the disciples are focusing on details, dates and times, things not in line with the heart of what Jesus is trying to reveal to them. Jesus proclaims that God’s promise is greater, and that it is more important to embrace the fulfillment of His promise because of who they are and what they are called to do. God promised that His Holy Spirit would come and fill and empower His people for His mission and kingdom and glory, and He has fulfilled His promise! May we live in this fulfilled promise everyday!

Response:Just as in the book of Acts - we truly need the empowering of the Spirit everyday to live. Jesus has fulfilled His promise to us and given us the Holy Spirit. There is no greater power that we could ever ask for when we speak of this resurrected Lord of all. Let’s ask for the Spirit’s empowering today while at home, at work or in school today, and that we would live in this amazing fulfilled promise of God.

To:       The UMBC Community
From:   Freeman Hrabowski, President
Diane Lee, Dean of Undergraduate Education

With great sadness, we must let you know that LaMont Toliver, Director of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education, passed away late this morning after suffering a heart attack on campus.

This is a tragic loss for LaMont’s immediate family – his wife, Lisa, and his four sons, Jacquet, Tristan, Julian, and Jordan, and a granddaughter, Kamry Toliver. (Both Julian and Jordan are students here on campus.)

LaMont’s passing is a tragic loss as well for the Meyerhoff Scholars Program family and the entire University community. LaMont graced us with his considerable abilities for the past 22 years – his leadership and deep compassion, and his wisdom, wit, and determination. His example will continue to inspire us, and the strong community of scholars he loved will comfort us in the days ahead.

As soon as we receive information from the Toliver family regarding funeral arrangements, we will let the campus community know. In the meantime, please keep LaMont and members of his family in your thoughts and prayers.

* * * *

Further information is available online at the Meyerhoff Scholars Program website: http://www.umbc.edu/meyerhoff

    A: I just enjoy being involved. Since my official position affords me more free time than others do, I get to jump into whatever projects I'm interested in. So whether it's helping out with something like Prove It! or working with our awesome (seb) friends for an event they're having, I get to work with a ton of amazing people all around campus. There's always something going on that I'd love to give my time to.

    A: I've learned it's important to take a step back sometimes and gauge how important something really is. It's really easy to get caught up in a single exam or single assignment and stress out over it, but at the end of the day no one thing will make or break you. So when I start getting stressed out over anything, I've learned it's important to step away, get together with some friends and get away from whatever's stressing me out. Even if one assignment or exam doesn't go my way, I know that at the end of the day I won't be too burnt out or stressed to keep moving on. Stepping away can even help me get a fresh perspective on whatever I was doing and improve it. As important as academics are, morale and mental health are important too.

It's the most stressful time of the semester, so we like to add a little humor to the week. When people see you walking down academic row with eye-black on, they can't help but do a double-take.
