I ♥ Chocolate

Once again, (seb) is hosting the annual I ♥ Chocolate event – a Valentine’s Day celebration of everything sweet. The centerpiece of the gathering will be a chocolate fountain where patrons can dip a wide array of chocolate-worthy morsels into the falling blanket of rich goodness. Additionally, ice cream will be served in bowls of chocolate. These edible dishes are sure to be the hit of the night, so get there in time!

But before falling into a chocolate coma, stay awake for the showing of The Proposal. The film goes great with chocolate- especially because it’s Valentine’s Day! And if that’s not enough, a chocolatey craft will be facilitated for those who need to keep busy. Stick around until the end to see if you’ve won the raffle prize!

This night will definitely be one that you keep a secret from your dentist. Don’t miss (seb)’s I ♥ Chocolate on Tuesday, February 14th at 7pm in Lower Flat Tuesdays.

Women get Rick-Rolled #2

We touched on Republican Presidential candidate, Rick Santorum’s interesting take on contraception in an earlier post.

But Rick doesn’t stop there.

He has been sharing his interesting opinion of female members of the US Armed services serving in the front lines.

When asked of his thoughts on the matter, he declared:

“It could be a very compromising situation where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interest of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved.”

Emotions, eh?

The ambiguity of his statement and mention of “emotions” led to a frenzy of criticisms.

Patricia Murphy, editor of Citizen Jane Politics and contributor to the Daily Beast, asserted:

“I think the only ‘various other emotions’ women in the military experience are confusion about why they are not being acknowledged for their service and frustration that they are not trusted to do more.”

Critics believed Santorum was denouncing the idea of women in combat because they would become too emotional and thus unreliable.

Later, Santorum clarified this little misunderstanding.

Appearing on the Today Show the following day, Santorum stated:

“…when you have men and women together in combat, I think men have emotions when you see a woman in harm’s way. I think it’s natural. It’s very much in our culture to be protective.”

Are Santorum’s bold assertions justifiable?

Would this ‘chivalrous attitude” toward women really present a problem if women were to join men in active combat?

Do you think male soldiers would fall susceptible to their “natural” need to protect their fellow, female soldiers?

We were sad to hear of the loss of another singing sensation.

As many of you may know, this past Saturday, 48-year-old Whitney Houston was found dead in her bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

No information has been released on the cause of her death. The coroner has placed a hold on the popstar’s autopsy report pending further investigation. According to the authorities, there are “no obvious signs of criminal intent.”

With only 24 hours to prepare, Houston was still honored Sunday night at the Grammy’s for her phenomenal contribution to the music industry.

With an opening prayer by LL Cool J and a heart wrenching performance by Jennifer Hudson, the singer’s memory stole the awards show.

But not only did Houston have powerhouse vocals, she also featured on the big screen with her roles in “The Body Guard” and “The Preacher’s Wife.”

Later this year, Houston will make one final movie appearance in a remake of ”Sparkle.” Houston will play the mother of three sisters who form a pop group.

Finally, for all you Whitney fans out there, here’s one last performance by the famous star.

Rick Santorum’s been on a roll (Rick Roll?) with his opinions on women, their bodies, and their health.

First, late last week Mr Santorum suggested women shouldn’t serve on the front lines of combat. Rick’s now making the claim that birth control – something that is prescribed in at least 14% of cases for reasons other than preventing pregnancy – should not be an insurable thing.

This has nothing to do with access. This is having someone pay for it, pay for something that shouldn’t even be in an insurance plan anyway because it is not, really an insurable item. This is something that is affordable, available. You don’t need insurance for these types of relatively small expenditures. This is simply someone trying to impose their values on somebody else, with the arm of the government doing so. That should offend everybody, people of faith and no faith that the government could get on a roll that is that aggressive.

Sorry, Rick. We’re not offended. As the infographic shows above, 99% of all women have used some form of contraception, and it gets pricey especially for young women, working class women, and women at or below the poverty line, not to mention personal.

Women, what do you think about Rick’s claim that we should be offended?
