This week, your Student Success Coach Emma spent the Wednesday Workshop talking all about how to start the semester off on the right foot. There might not be any shortcuts to a 4.0, but there are lots of handy tips and tricks you can learn. We covered topics like:
- Planning your time efficiently
- Focusing better during your actual study time
- Reading your syllabi to understand expectations
- How to avoid cramming while still being prepared for tests
- Where to go when you need help
Don't forget that on Friday, February 7 (this week!) our Director of the Science and Mathematics Advising Resource Team, Ms. Michelle Bulger, will be hosting drop-in hours where you can get some help setting up your planner (physical or digital). Details:

Regarding the Potential for Federal Immigration Enforcement at UMBC
Sharing general guidance and procedures
Dear UMBC Community,
As general counsel for UMBC, I write today to share guidance in response to questions and concerns we have heard from community members regarding the possibility of federal immigration enforcement action occurring on our campus. First, I want to make clear that at this time, we are not aware of any requests or actions related to UMBC from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or other external law enforcement agencies. What follows here is general guidance and recommended procedures for such situations.
As a public institution, UMBC’s campus is largely open to the public, but many spaces are restricted for reasons of privacy, safety, and operational needs—including residence halls, classrooms, laboratories, and administrative and faculty offices. To access such non-public areas, law enforcement must have a judicial warrant or subpoena. Additionally, federal privacy laws generally prohibit the release of information from a student’s records, including to law enforcement, without a valid court order or subpoena.
If you receive a request from external law enforcement for information, records, or access to non-public space on campus, notify UMBC Police (410-455-5555), who will coordinate with relevant university officials and respond to the request. More specifically, we advise that you:
- Call UMBC Police, as noted above.
- Inform the government/law enforcement agent that you are not authorized to provide access and that they should coordinate with UMBC Police.
- Invite them to wait in a public area while you contact UMBC Police.
- Do not accept a subpoena or warrant on behalf of the university yourself.
- Do not physically block or interfere with enforcement action.
- Document the interaction. You have the right to document the situation, including:
- Date and time
- Officer name and identification number
- Agency affiliation
- Details of the interaction

announce the official merger of Orser Center and Public Humanities while
discussing the history of Chicory!

In the 1960s, Black writers in Baltimore utilized Chicory, a
poetry magazine published by the Enoch Pratt Free Library from
1966-1983, as an artistic form for activism. Its five editors published
the work by everyone from children to seniors, from social workers to
people in prison about everything from bad housing and schools to
celebrations of Black joy. Visit this enlightening exhibition that
explores this radical publication.
Soul of the Butterfly is a traveling exhibit that uses Chicory to
tell the story of how Black artist-activists in Baltimore have been
making change since the 1960s. Featuring poetry, artwork, and photos, it
reminds us why the Baltimore Afro-American called Chicory “the
most authentic microphone of Black folks talking ever devised.” It
connects past and present by featuring work by young writers, artists,
and creators in Baltimore in conversation with this history.
Soul of the Butterfly was
co-curated by a team of students at Rutgers University-Newark, Bard
High School Early College Baltimore, Dewmore Baltimore, and Writers in
Baltimore Schools led by Dr. Mary Rizzo and Erin Santana.

MA in Critical Approaches to Science, Technology, and Medicine at JHU: Applications Welcome!

CAST-M is a fully-funded, 2-year MA program which creates pathways for diverse, talented undergraduates to pursue PhDs in STEM-adjacent humanities. We train CAST-M students in analytical and methodological skills for research in fields such as science studies, medical humanities, medical anthropology, history of science and technology, and history of medicine. Further program information can be found here.
In addition to full stipend, tuition, and benefits, the program also
offers personalized advising from dedicated faculty, small class sizes,
strong links to other Hopkins departments such as Anthropology and
History, as well as a close-knit, collegial program culture.

Boston University's Summer Prelaw Academy: June 3–27, 2025

Anyone is welcome to apply, but the focus of the program is for rising seniors and those who are 1 year away from beginning law school.
BU-SPLA will expose students to foundational law school coursework, critical race theory, and experiential learning. Students will also learn about the law school admissions process and be mentored while working on a personal statement, an optional statement, and a resume. And of course, students will enjoy social outings in Boston and have the opportunity to build community with their peers. BU Law faculty and staff will come together to welcome, teach, and support BU-SPLA students and offer a glimpse into what it is like to be a student at BU Law.
There is no cost to apply to or attend the program. Travel to and from Boston, housing during the program, and many meals will be covered. The program will host several social events on campus and outings in Boston. Additionally, all participants who complete the program will receive a $1500 stipend.
BU-SPLA will take place at BU Law's modern, spacious law complex from June 3–27, 2025.
The application is now open and the deadline to apply is March 15, 2025.

WELCOME TO MTC!
Hi everyone! If you are new to MTC this semester welcome and if you aren’t new welcome back! We are so excited to get this spring semester started so please read below for all of the information you need!

MAMMA MIA AUDITIONS
Auditions for our Spring Musical Mamma Mia are now open! All applicants are required to fill out the form. You can audition in person or virtually.
When: Wednesday 2/12 from 4pm-8:30pm
Where: Sherman 006
Audition form
If you are auditioning in person: Sign up for a slot using the SignUpGenius linked in the form. Please come prepared with 30 seconds of a musical theatre song and be ready to perform the dance audition.
If you are auditioning virtually: Submit both your singing and dance audition by 8:30pm on 2/13.
There will be two parts to this audition: a vocal and a dance part if you are comfortable with doing so! The videos to learn the 30 second dance will be in both the virtual and in-person audition sections at the end of this form. If you are submitting a virtual audition, please submit two separate videos as will be listed in your section.
This form is mandatory for any audition, virtual or in-person.
MAMMA MIA CALLBACKS
Callbacks will be held for Mamma Mia the next day, if you receive an email to be called back you are invited to do so.
When: Thursday 2/13 7pm-9pm
Where: Apartment Community Center (ACC) Gold room
Information on who is called back will be sent out the night of auditions
GENERAL BODY MEETINGS
Come on out and hang out with us and other club members at the general body meetings. We play games, hold workshops with other clubs and provide a lot of information on our upcoming shows and events.
When: Every Friday from 12:00pm-12:50pm
Where: ILSB (Interdisciplinary Life Science Building) 237
This Friday 2/7 will be our first one. It will be an audition workshop and a chance to meet the E-Board.

Congratulations to our recent PhD, ME, and MS graduates!
Three ESI researchers recently defended their dissertation and theses.
ESI research engineer,
Dr. Ivan Gamino del Rio, earned his PhD in Space Research and Astrobiology from the Universidad de Alcalá, Spain in fall 2024. Dr. Gamino del Rio’s dissertation was titled “New hardware computer architecture approach to increase the reliability of space computer systems”. He developed a novel computational framework from the ground up for space applications, which included a parallel processor to keep track of the telemetry of on-board software as it is running. At the ESI, Dr. Gamino del Rio is currently supporting software development for the Trans-Iron Galactic Element Recorder for the International Space Station (TIGERISS) instrument.
TIGERISS, a collaboration between NASA GSFC and several US universities including UMBC (CSST and ESI), will measure the abundance of heavy elements in cosmic rays emanating from high-energy events, such as supernovas. TIGERISS measurements will help scientists to better understand how and where these particles originated throughout our Milky Way galaxy.
ESI research engineer
Carissa Arillo earned her Masters of Engineering in Robotics at the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland College Park in fall 2024. Her coursework involved robot perception, navigation, and control, as well as machine learning and modeling. As part of her ME research, Arillo developed a large-scale mission-based autonomous navigation robot with a focus in embedded systems for robotics. At ESI, Arillo leads the software development of a new digital twin architecture for future remote sensing applications. This project is a collaboration between UMBC/ESI and a partnering space industry corporation. Arillo supervises a small team of UMBC students in the demonstration of neural networks that direct a leader-follower pair of spaceborne remote sensors to detect and measure Earth targets.
ESI systems engineer
Danny Nelson earned his Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UMBC in winter 2025. His thesis was titled "Thermal design and analysis of a next-generation Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP) instrument". Nelson developed a thermal model that assesses the design and on-orbit temperature control performance of MegaHARP, a planned future iteration of HARP2.
HARP2 is ESI’s advanced Earth observation instrument that is currently on-board the NASA Plankton Aerosol Cloud ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. He currently supports the testing and development of the
AirHARP2 instrument suite at ESI, mission support for
OreSat and HARP2, and GAPMAP, a multi-angle polarimeter mission out of UMBC technology incubation company, GRASP-Earth.
