AFS provides intercultural learning experiences that bring global
cultures together by helping people connect, transforming the lives of
thousands of students, families, and individuals every year. With
exchange programs in more than 50 countries and a large network of
volunteers, educators, and staff, AFS is committed to helping
participants understand their immersion experiences in a foreign
    culture.

Exchange programs give participants an all-access pass to discover and
explore a new culture. Since 1947, AFS has given more than 400,000
students and young adult professionals the opportunity to travel abroad
and embark on personal growth experiences that continue for a lifetime.
This year, the worldwide network of AFS Volunteers will work with almost
13,000 students—each looking for an exciting and educational
    international experience.

AFS Participants

AFS exchange programs draw people from around the world who want to
get to know people from other countries. Participants live with a host
family while attending school or working within a community, gaining a
fresh perspective on a foreign culture. By experiencing new cultures as
outsiders, AFS Participants also gain a deeper understanding of
    themselves and their home cultures.

All AFS programs offer participants the opportunity to build
meaningful connections with everyone they meet during their experiences
abroad, as well as in their home countries and within the AFS global
community. These bonds start to form throughout the application and
orientation process, when participants meet each other for the first
time. During the experience abroad, early friendships are strengthened
and new friends are made at orientations and events organized by AFS in
the host country. Participants will also meet countless people in the
local community through their host families, schools, workplaces and
    through extracurricular activities.

For more details go to the link below:
http://www.afs.org/afs-and-exchange-programs/

#2 More on Freaky Mice

<Tagline>Hybrid Mice Resistant to Warfarin, Yikes!</Tagline>

So, I have indeed posted about these freaky mice in my previous post, hence the #2. There is more than one source of these freaky mice; in fact, these mice can develop resistance to warfarin in two known ways: point mutation, and hybridization between European house mice and Algerian mice. Through spontaneous point mutation through DNA replication, the European house mice could develop resistance to warfarin, but it is more likely that today's European house mice developed resistance through the latter method.

The typical European house mice do not have the gene needed in order to make a protein resistant to warfarin. Warfarin, a pesticides (more specifically a rodenticide), inhibits the
action of Vitamin K in mice by attaching to an inhibitory site of the protein (called vkorc1) which attaches to Vitamin K, rendering the mice unable to form blood clots,
essentially leading them to bleed to death. However, the Algerian mice, as a result of their grain-only diet in North Africa, have already evolved the gene in order to deal with Vitamin K deficiencies. Other rodents (e.g. certain hamster species) that have grain-only diets also developed this gene.

Sure, as I have stated in my last post, many of the hybrids that formed between the crossbreeding of European house mice and Algerian mice are either infertile or nonviable. However, a very few of the hybrids contained mostly genes from the European house mouse, but have a huge chunk of genes from the Algerian mice related to warfarin resistance. This particular sequence is the vkorc1 gene from Algerian mice. It alters vkorc1 so that it remains functional yet does not bind to warfarin, essentially limiting the toxicity of warfarin on the mouse.

Of course, humans have attempted to use warfarin in order to remove these unwanted pests, but as Rachel Carson states, perhaps it is time to reconsider using pesticides - especially the same ones - repeatedly. Rachel Carson had already noted, in her book Silent Spring, of pesticide-resistant beetles, weevils, moths, and other pests that wreck havoc on agriculture and the environment. This could also apply to pests such as mice, except with warfarin for mice instead of DDT for insects.

Even though warfarin hasn't shown to be toxic to humans (I think), it has proven to be increasingly ineffective in controlling pest mice populations. Through this pressure, the resistant mice survive and multiply, changing the demographics of the mice population, and will prove to be more than a nuisance in households. Perhaps we should seek alternatives, although I do not think cats are effective at removing this menace.

PS: It should be noted that the European house mice and the Algerian mice are separate species, just like how Polar bears and Grizzly bears are separate species (male hybrids between the two are infertile, thus showing the two as separate species). It is reported that the European house mice and the Algerian mice were isolated for around 1.5 million years, meaning they are distantly related - far longer (maybe up to 30x longer) than Neanderthals were isolated from humans. Humans are partially to blame for the introduction of one species onto the other, forming hybrids that could wreck havoc on homes.

More links to the findings in addition to the one under the button:
http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/stories/freaky-mutant-mouse-steals-genes-to-resist-poison
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/notrocketscience/2011/07/21/house-mice-picked-up-poison-resistance-gene-by-having-sex-with-related-species/

#1 Evolution at Work: 'Freaky' Mouse

<Tagline>What a Hybrid!</Tagline>

The European house mouse is very distantly related to its cousin the

there are some exceptions: sometimes, when the European house mouse and
the Algerian mouse mate, they produce offspring with the advantageous
gene that gives them a distinct advantage: resistance to the pesticide warfarin. Surely, this must be an issue of concern. And I don't think bringing cats into the picture will eliminate mice from households.

Latin Dance Lessons FAQs

<Tagline>See if Your Question is Answered Here</Tagline>

We've received a huge response regarding the Latin Dance Lessons coming this fall at the Women's Center so we thought it might be helpful to share the FAQ's we've been asked. Should you have a question that does not appear here on this list, please contact us at the Women's Center at x-2714 or the instructor, Jasmin Flores, at: flores1@umbc.edu

FAQs

Q: "What should I wear?"

A: You should dress comfortably in non-restrictive clothing. There is no need to wear any special dance attire.

Q: "How will the classes be taught?"

A: The classes are informal and taught in a laid-back manner. There may be an occasional night out at a dance club with the group, but this is optional. The intructor encourages everyone to come with intentions of having fun!

Q: "Do I need to register for these lessons?"

A: No. The lessons are given on a first come, first serve basis each week. All you need to do is show up.

Q: "Do I need to bring a dance partner?"

A: Although it would be ideal, it is not necessary. If you don't have a partner, you're encouraged to still come.

Q: "Do the lessons cost anything?"

A: No. They are absolutely free. (There may be occasional potlucks when each individual --on a volunteer basis--will bring in food or refreshments, however it is NOT required.)

Q: "Do I need any dance experience?"

A: No. None at all. If you do, great, but it's not necessary since these lessons are primarily for beginners.

We hope to see you there!

With so much media attention being paid to the debt ceiling in recent weeks, it’s easy to forget there are other things happening in the world. Here’s a taste of stories making national headlines beyond debt:

The Senate has been unable to agree on terms for financing the Federal Aviation Administration. 4,000 employees are expected to go unpaid at least through Labor Day.

On Thursday, President Obama celebrates his 50th birthday. So far, most of the attention seems to be on his gray hair.

Missouri passes law making it illegal for teachers to be friends with students on social networks. The larger goal of the bill is to protect children from predatory teachers.

As the economy continues to slow, some are speculating on a double dip recession.

Tribal filmmakers in Rochester for Cultural exchange

<Tagline>An Indian student says: " ... we are knowledgehunters"</Tagline>

ROCHESTER — A rare cultural exchange is taking place this week as a group of young filmmakers from Nagaland, a remote tribal region in India that borders Burma/Myanmar, visits the United States for the first time to debut their work in Rochester.

Heather Layton, artist and senior lecturer of art at the University of Rochester, along with her husband, Brian Bailey, professor in adolescent education at Nazareth College, will host the filmmakers during their nearly two-week stay. The seeds for this trip to America were planted last December when Bailey and Layton were invited to Nagaland for two weeks to foster international relations and promote the arts as a form of cultural diplomacy.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to connect two sides of the world using film, music, and visual arts as the common ground,” says Layton. The goal of the project, as explained by Layton, is to create a productive and sustainable international exchange through artistic collaborations.
