Mohamed Younis honored by IEEE for contributions to modern communication technologies
Mohamed Younis, professor and chair of the CSEE Department, has been honored by the IEEE Communications Society for his significant and lasting contributions to the advancement of modern communication technologies. The award was announced December 9 at the society’s Global Communications Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. In particular, Younis was honored by the IEEE technical committee on internet of things, ad hoc, and sensor networks for his impactful contributions to these frontier areas of communications.
The proliferation of mobile phones, smart devices, and sensors such as cameras has transformed the communications landscape in recent decades. Oftentimes, diverse devices, such as autonomous vehicles and wearable sensors, talk to other devices without relying on pre-existing communications infrastructure such as routers, a set-up called an ad hoc network.
Younis’ work has advanced the expanding scope of communications technology, while also working to keep these methods reliable and secure. He has developed algorithms for networks of moveable sensor nodes, for example drones on a search-and-rescue mission, to recover from the failure of individual nodes; has created new ways to send signals directly from air to underwater; and has studied ways to protect the privacy of data sent from medical devices and sensors, among many other contributions.
“This award was a surprise to me—it made me happy,” says Younis, who traveled to South Africa to receive it. “It’s a recognition from the community that means a lot.”

Since 2006, the StoryCenter network in partnership with universities and international organizations has promoted Digital Storytelling Conferences, providing the global community with an opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences.
In its first time in Latin America, the 12th International Digital Storytelling Conference will take place in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025. Hosted by Museu da Pessoa , this edition will have as its theme 'Lives, Voices and Knowledge in a World on Fire' , exploring the power of storytelling in climate justice. We are confident that this gathering will be a pivotal moment to inspire action and strengthen partnerships towards a more sustainable and just future.
Taking place on the eve of COP30, which will also be held in Belém, the event will offer a unique opportunity to share stories, inspire action and strengthen partnerships.

commonvision is UMBC's Student Design and Print Center, located in The Commons, Room 309. We are a full-service print shop as well as a design and animation studio. Our Animators are responsible for advertisements for digital signage, social media, and the web for events and programs around campus. A great job for hands on, creative students who want to learn more about animation, motion graphics, and graphic design.
ANIMATOR & MOTION DESIGNER
commonvision is looking for students who are comfortable working in:
- After Effects CC+
- Illustrator CC+
- Photoshop CC+
Bonus Points If:
- You have experience with Premiere CC+
- You have experience with Maxon Cinema 4D
- You have an interest in or have basic graphic design principles
- You have an interest in or have experience in video/film
- You have an interest or experience with sound editing
- You have an interest or experience in photography
Your personality is along the lines of:
- Self-motivated
- Team-oriented
- Attentive to details
- Manages time and deadlines well
- You really freaking love animation/motion design
Non-negotiables:
- Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Must pass a judicial and ECR check
- Must have at least 2 on-campus semesters left
- Must be able to work at least 15 hours a week
- There is no required level of animation class you must have taken to be considered--just show us your work! This is an on-campus job that works with your class schedule.

Undergraduate UMBC students are preferred for this position.
commonvision is UMBC's Design and Print Center, located in The Commons, Room 309. We are a full service print shop as well as a design and animation studio.
You do not have to be a visual arts major to apply to this position. This position requires working in the production room of commonvision. No printing experience is required; we will train the right person.
Applicants Must:
- Be highly dedicated & organized
- Have at least 2 semesters left at UMBC
- Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Must pass a judicial and OEI check
- Be able to work at least 10 hours a week
- Be an undergraduate student
Students will be responsible for:
- Receiving, reviewing and processing print orders
- Prioritizing tasks for efficiency and tight deadlines
- Modifying existing digital projects using InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop
- Running print jobs on wide format and large volume printers
- Take the lead installing projects around campus
- Using other finishing services as required by the project
- Coil Binding
- Roto-Cutter
- Guillotine Cutter
- Lamination and foam board mounting
We’re looking for students with:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- A great sense of organization and planning
- Ability to work without constant supervision
- Ability to work in a fast-paced physical environment
- Experience working with MAC and PC Operating Systems

commonvision is HIRING Graphic Designers!

commonvision is looking for Graphic Designers to join our team!
Undergraduate UMBC students are preferred for this position.
commonvision is UMBC's Student Design and Print Center, located in The Commons, Room 309. We are a full service print shop as well as a design and animation studio. Our Graphic Designers are responsible for on-campus advertisements, design for digital environments (social media and file creation for motion graphics), print design, and more! A great job for hands on, creative students who want to learn more about graphic design, print, and promotions.
We’re looking for students who are comfortable working in:
- Illustrator CC+
- Photoshop CC+
- InDesign CC+
Bonus Points If:
- You have experience in pre- and post-production print, or any other kind of printing skills
- You have interest or experience with animation/motion design
- You can get super nerdy about typography
- You have an interest or experience in photography
Your personality is along the lines of:
- Self-motivated
- Team-oriented
- Attentive to details
- Manages time and deadlines well
- You love design too much
Non-negotiables:
- Be highly dedicated & organized
- Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Must pass a judicial and OEI check
- Must have at least 2 on-campus semesters left
- Must be able to work at least 15 hours a week
- Be an undergraduate student

- Screenshot of your summer AND fall schedule (if you don’t have yet that is okay, just send us whether or not you want to start in summer or fall)
