Thank you for electing Liang Zhu (Mechanical Engineering) as the new vice chair of the AAAFSC executive board.  

Election statistics: Compared to the last election in Spring 2024, AAAFSC membership increased by 35% and election participation increased by 28%!

We thank Emily Yoon (English) for her leadership in the last three years. Emily is currently on leave from UMBC for a prestigious Career Enhancement Fellowship from the Institute for Citizens & Scholars. Congratulations, Emily! 

We will elect more leaders in the Spring semester.

The US-UK Fulbright Commission is pleased to announce its annual competition for its UK Fulbright Summer Institutes. Academically talented UMBC freshmen and sophomores of any major with little to no previous international travel experience and/or are first-generation college students are particularly encouraged to apply! Applicants can choose from one of six summer institutes across the United Kingdom with topics ranging from Climate Change to Social Justice in a British context.

The UK Summer Institutes last between three and four weeks, and almost all costs, including tuition, fees, housing, most meals and airfare, are included. Applications are due by February 3, 2025. 

Dr. Brian Souders, Associate Director of Global Learning in UMBC's Education Abroad Office, is hosting two information sessions, one in-person and one virtual, to help students decide which of these scholarship opportunities is best for them.

MODELING OF URBAN HYDROLOGIC SYSTEMS


Description

The DOE-supported Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC) Integrated Field Laboratory seeks applicants to the UMBC Ph.D. program in Environmental Engineering to carry out hydrologic modeling of urban groundwater-surface water systems at the watershed scale. A background in engineering or earth science that includes numerical analysis is required. Work will be carried out in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of co-PIs across eight institutions, spanning earth science and engineering disciplines. 

Benefits

The Ph.D. graduate assistantship appointment is through the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering in affiliation with the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education at UMBC. The Ph.D. graduate assistantship appointment includes a stipend plus tuition remission and health insurance.

On December 2, 2024, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, join us in an engaging roundtable session dedicated to exploring the power of storytelling in various fields of study and practice. This event will be a stimulating and supportive environment where participants can share insights and experiences and foster connections.

The event will feature four graduate students and storytellers: Chelsea Mays-Williams (LLC), Elaine MacDougall (LLC), Viridiana Colosio-Martinez (LLC), and Holly Turpin from the Storytelling Academy at Loughborough University. Each storyteller will share their unique perspectives on incorporating storytelling into their work. After all four have presented their insights, we will open the floor for an interactive discussion among attendees to connect with the projects and offer support and feedback.

We look forward to a vibrant exchange of ideas, stories, and inspiration that will enhance the work of everyone involved. Take advantage of this opportunity to be part of a dynamic conversation!

Dr. José Antonio Bowen will visit UMBC on Thursday, January 23, to lead two in-person workshops for UMBC faculty and staff based on his book Teaching with AI, co-authored with C. Edward Watson, JHU Press, 2024.

Registration closes on Thursday, January 16.

These will be in-person only workshops in PAHB 337 (The Dance Cube). You may register for one or both workshops. This topics are especially relevant as we navigate new possibilities and challenges arising for teaching and learning in the era of generative AI. Please bring a device to the workshops.

The workshops are only open to UMBC faculty and staff.

The Academic Success Center will be following a modified schedule this week in observance of the upcoming holiday. Please see the adjustments to our hours below.

Wednesday, November 27, 2024 
  • Course Content tutoring will be in person from 11 AM -2 PM and then only online from 2 - 6 PM.
  • Computing Success Tutoring will operate from 11 AM - 2 PM.
  • All Writing Center appointments will be held online.
  • SI PASS will operate as normally until 4 PM.
  • No Academic Skills Meetings will be available online or in person.
