Expanding Diversity in Economics+ Summer Institute

The Expanding Diversity in Economics program is thrilled to announce its next application cycle is open, from its new home at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Founded in 2021 by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics Research (BFI) to diversify the pool of students pursuing degrees and careers in economics, the program will now be known as Expanding Diversity in Economics+ (EDE+) as it seeks to broaden its impact. The 2025 Summer Institute will offer a comprehensive exposure, experience, and education into economic analysis and research careers through a combination of both in-person and remote programming from June 2-July 30, 2025.

Applications for the 2025 program are due by January 29, 2025.

Who Should Apply?

Students enrolled in an accredited, undergraduate, degree-granting institution in the United States are eligible to apply. Participants must be 18 years old by the program start date of June 2, 2025, and the ideal applicant will be a college freshman or sophomore with an interest in learning more about economics and an aptitude for quantitative coursework. Our goal is to recruit a diverse group of students from a broad range of backgrounds.

Hello everyone!
This Saturday the 23rd, Anthropology Club and Ancient Studies Club are taking a field trip to the Walters museum in Baltimore! If you did not sign up but would like to go please email me directly. There is limited space on the bus, but we still have room for a few more!
Below is the itinerary, what to bring with you, where on campus to meet, and some additional important information to know about the trip.

Things to know about the trip:

  1. Please bring your UMBC ID with you!

  2. You may bring a small backpack with you, but you will need to wear it on the front while inside the gallery. You cannot leave items on the bus since it may not be the same bus when heading back to campus.

  3. The Walters does not allow outside food, drink, or gum

    1. If you have any medical accommodations (food or otherwise), please contact accessibility@thewalters.org

  4. You are welcome to bring your own money for lunch/snacks at the Walters cafe or for goodies at the gift shop.

  5. Photography is encouraged, but only with flash off. You cannot bring tripods.


The itinerary:

  • 11:00 am  –The bus will arrive outside the Performing Arts and Humanities building (PAHB), next to the arches (The Forum). 

  • 11:15 am  – The bus departs to the museum (do not be late!)

  • ~11:40 am  – Arrival at the museum

  • 11:45am - 2:15pm  – Enjoy your time at the museum! You may ask Professor Phin any questions about Ancient Greek artifacts, history, or art!

  • 2:15 pm  – Loading back on the bus to depart.

  • 2:30 pm  – The bus departs from the museum (do not be late!)

  • 3:00 pm  – arrival back at campus next to PAHB.


Directions:

The bus will park on the road between PAHB and lot 8 for both pick up and drop off. If you see orange arches, you’re in the right place!

Strengthening Image Generative AI: Integrating Fingerprinting and Revision Methods for Enhanced Safety and Control

In the rapidly evolving field of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) for imaging, models such as DALL·E3 and Stable Diffusion have transitioned from theoretical concepts to practical tools with significant impact across various sectors including entertainment, art, journalism, and education. These advancements represent a substantial technological evolution, enhancing creative and professional practices. However, the widespread accessibility of Gen-AI also facilitates misuse by malicious actors who create deepfakes and spread misinformation, posing serious risks to societal well-being and privacy. This talk will address these critical challenges by focusing on enhancing the reliability of Image Gen-AI models through the identification and mitigation of inherent vulnerabilities and the development of computational tools and frameworks for enabling better community oversight. The talk will describe the development of innovative fingerprinting techniques that trace malicious Gen-AI outputs back to their sources, and the implementation of strategies to prevent the generation of unauthorized content. These efforts collectively strengthen the robustness and accountability of Gen-AI technologies, particularly in sensitive applications.
 
Dr. Changhoon Kim is a Postdoctoral Scientist in the Bedrock Team at Amazon. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering at Arizona State University. His primary research focuses on the creation of secure machine learning systems. He has dedicated his efforts to developing user-attribution methods for generative models, a critical area of research in the age of AI-generated hyper-realistic content for tracing malicious usage, and machine unlearning for removing private or harmful content from AI models. Kim’s research has been recognized at prestigious conferences such as ICLR, ICML, ECCV, and CVPR, and a U.S. patent for user-attribution in generative models. To further contribute to the community, he has organized tutorials and workshops at leading conferences to emphasize the importance of secure generative AI.
