Arteaga's Proposal Selected for Funding

The NASA ROSES proposal submitted to the Ocean Biology and Biogeochemistry program titled "Retrospective analysis and forecasting of the impact of marine heatwaves on oceanic export production” was selected for funding. The team members are PI Lionel Arteaga (610.1/UMBC); Co-I's Ivona Cetinic (616/MSU), Michael Mehari, Li Ren, and Cecile Rousseaux; and, Collaborator Andrea Molod. The period of performance is January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2027.

Dr. Arteaga provided this summary of the proposal:

"This project seeks to understand the impact of marine heatwaves (MHWs) on oceanic carbon export. Our first goal is to conduct a retrospective analysis of MHWs over the last two decades of the existing record of satellite ocean color observations using the combined modeling and data assimilation framework embedded in the NASA Ocean Biogeochemical Model. The second goal of this project entails the development of a forecast system of MHWs and derived changes in export fluxes of organic carbon. We will leverage Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) seasonal prediction system (S2S) version 3 to predict the occurrence of marine heatwaves in the high-resolution coupled Atmosphere-Ocean General Model produced by NASA's Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) and generate a retrospective ecological forecast of export fluxes."
