World's first chatbot restored on the world's first time-sharing system Original ELIZA code runs in CTSS emulator on Linux/MacOS

MIT professor Joseph Weizenbaum created ELIZA in 1966 partly to demonstrate how easy it was to convince people that a computer was intelligent. His original MAD-SLIP version of ELIZA, usually considered the world's first chatbot, is running again on its native platform for the first time in nearly 60 years. Weizenbaum's original CACM paper, ELIZA — A Computer Program for the Study of Natural Language Communication Between Man and Machine, is available online.

This historic breakthrough was accomplished by a team of researchers (Rupert Lane, Anthony Hay, Arthur Schwarz, and Jeff Shrager) who successfully restored ELIZA to operation on a reconstructed version of MIT's Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS), running on an emulated IBM 7094. You can download the code from this GitHub repository and run it on most Linux or MacOS systems.

Welcome to our winter break creative writing! We have a couple things for all of us to keep writing during this break. This will be a few hours of writing a week, but feel free to adjust your own goals for your needs/desires. You do not need to participate, but if you want to push yourself to get some words written, go for it!
Overall length goal:
  • Long pieces(prose, screenwriting, etc.): 15k words, 20k stretch goal if you're finding yourself ahead of pace
  • Short stories: 5 different stories, 7 stretch goal
  • Poetry: 10 different poems, 13 stretch goal
You can always go more or less, and if you wish definitely go back and edit your work in place of some of this: these goals as written are more for getting manuscripts done to look back at later during the semester.
Longer prompts: Try to use these for a few chapters, stories, or poems. We will post three total, one around every ten days. Here's the first one
  • Reflect on the good and the bad of your college experience so far. What have you learned? How could this make a good story or contribute to ideas in your work?

Word-prompting: Use these for jumping-off, just initially getting an idea of what to write about if you're not sure, or for incorporating detail into ideas you already have. It starts January and is every other day--then our spring semester begins Jan. 17th so it ends then. (See below)

Please share pieces as you find fit--if you finish a poem, story, or a couple chapters then post it to our Discord #writing-prompts channel, and we hope to see it grow through the next month! I'll be on campus for the winter semester so if anyone wants to meet, whether to discuss or to silently write, that's doable!
