Dear Colleagues,

As we come to the end of the year and celebrate our Annual Service Awardees, one of the messages I hope you are hearing loud and clear is how important it is to "Care and Connect" with each other—know you are valued and that this community appreciates you.

To that end, as announced at our service awards event, UMBC will observe Tuesday, December 24, as an Administrative Leave day. This will extend our holiday break in December, with the campus reopening on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Timesheets for eligible Regular and Contingent II employees will be automatically coded with the administrative leave code (ADM).

Please check with your supervisor to see if you are required to maintain essential services during this time. All collective bargaining employees required to work on this day will be paid in accordance with their collective bargaining agreements. Other employees who are required for essential services may use this Administrative Leave day on another day prior to March 31, 2025.

We would like to thank all of you for your commitment to the university and our students. And I hope you enjoy a restful and joyful winter break!

Dean of Students Dr. John Fox ‘91 Speaks at UMBC Donor Event on New Resources for Student Care and Support

Dr. John Fox ‘91, the inaugural dean of students in the Division of Student Affairs (DoSA), spoke at the November 2024 Hilltop and 1966 Societies Dinner about the recent addition of a Dean of Students office to better support student success and wellbeing.

“The Division of Student Affairs focuses on wellbeing, engagement, and the holistic student experience,” Dr. Fox said. “It’s very exciting because the division’s recent realignment increases our collective effectiveness and, for students, better understanding of how we serve them. One aspect of the realignment is the creation of the Dean of Students Office, which provides an entry point for students facing gaps in basic needs, experiencing emotional and social challenges, and in need of direction when they are unsure who can assist them. A Dean of Students' office is one strategy to address student success in and out of the classroom.”

Sara Lerma Jones, director of donor relations in the Office of Institutional Advancement, said, “Donors shared that they are excited to hear about this new direction in support of students, and the talk provided a real opportunity to share current impact and future needs. Opportunities to hear firsthand from leaders like Dr. Fox speaks to the importance of campus partnerships. Demonstrating to donors and other constituents how UMBC is prioritizing student success and well-being, and how their financial support makes a difference in the lives of our students creates an increased sense of commitment and support from these donors.”

The dinner celebrated donors from UMBC’s Hilltop and 1966 Societies and also included remarks from Dr. Valerie Shears Ashby, president; Dr. Manfred H.M. van Dulmen, provost; Tiffany Tucker, director of athletics; Sara Lerma Jones, director of donor relations; and Dr. Stephen Freeland, vice provost of undergraduate academic affairs.

Winter 2025 Registration Continues

As your Fall 2024 classes wind down over the next few weeks, you may want to turn your attention to the Winter session. Winter courses offer a great opportunity to catch up or get ahead of the 30 credits per year pace to maintain in order to graduate in four years. You can view the entire Winter 2025 course offering list, and learn more about how to register, on the Winter session website.

Dr. Kim is offering ASIA 300: Topics in Asian Studies (Modern East Asia) as an online, asynchronous course this winter. This course examines China, Japan, and Korea from the mid-19th century to the present in terms of their history, politics, society, and culture. Seats are still available; check out the attached flier for more information!

Summer Study Abroad Opportunity: Japan

Dr. Oakes is leading a study abroad trip to Japan this summer! UMBC's Faculty-Led Study Abroad is a great opportunity to add a study abroad experience to your studies without needing to worry about fitting it in with your other academic plans.

The three week Art and Power in Japan program will visit some of Japan's most historic cities and sites, including Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Hiroshima. Participants will learn not only about the historic importance of these places and the art and architecture there, but will also explore their relevance to Japanese culture today.

Learn more about Dr. Oakes's trip, and how to apply for it, on the Education Abroad portal. The deadline to apply is February 14, 2025, which will be here much sooner than you think!
