Día de los Muertos Event and Ofrenda Information
See the original myUMBC page here:
LHGSA is collaborating with a number of on campus groups for a Día de los Muertos event on Wednesday, October 30th 2024 from 11AM-3PM. See the information below where activities and an ofrenda will be taking place.
¡Feliz Día de los Muertos! Join us in Flat Tuesdays for a crafty celebration of one of Mexico's most colorful & spiritual holidays. Learn more about the holiday and its history, as well as how it's celebrated in other parts of the world, by stopping by our table in Main Street, down the stairs from Flat Tuesdays.
Activities will include craft making (including marigolds, papel picado, and calavera doll making), remembering and welcoming loved ones that have passed, music, food, and more! Create things to add to our community ofrenda, or take them home for your own!
This is day 1 of 2 that we will be celebrating Day of the Dead. Traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, we will celebrate on the 30th and 31st to better accommodate staff and students that wish to participate. The Gathering Space is also open on Friday (November 1st) to support students who may want a more solemn space to remember.
Sponsored by: Latin American Feminisms Working Groups, Retriever Support Services, Latinx and Hispanic Graduate Student Association, Latinx and Hispanic Faculty Association, The Mosaic, Intercultural Communication M.A. Program, and The Women’s Center.

CWC tonight!
Hey all you crazy writers,
CWC will be meeting this week, as any week, in SHER011 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM! Come join us tonight (10/23), write a bit, and talk about projects and all that is good to you.
Midterms were going crazy and I was forgetting to post these updates, sorry y'all T_T
Thankfully there is only one exam left for now and my footfalls again resound to prove that I am, indeed, alive.
See you tonight,
Ethan + the CWC officers
P.S., be on the lookout for an announcement about our November workshop, coming up in a few weeks!

Talk: ML Reproducibility: Sources of Algorithmic, Implementation & Observational Variability, 10/29
4-5pm EDT Tuesday, October 29, 2024, online
ML Reproducibility: Sources of Algorithmic, Implementation, and Observational Variability
Kevin Coakley, UC San Diego
4-5pm EDT Tue., 29 Oct. 2024, online
Reproducibility is fundamental to scientific research, as it underpins trust, progress, and credibility. In machine learning (ML), achieving reproducibility is difficult due to variability in algorithms, implementations, and observational factors. This presentation explores key contributors to irreproducibility in ML, including algorithmic factors like
hyperparameter tuning and random weight initialization, implementation differences in software and hardware, and observational factors such as dataset bias and data preprocessing. It emphasizes the need to view ML model performance as a distribution, not a single metric or average of results, and clarifies the difference between reproducibility and portability. The goal is to guide researchers on improving ML reproducibility and identifying the critical information necessary for replicating experimental outcomes.
Kevin Coakley is a Computational and Data Science Research Specialist at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and UC San Diego focusing on AI reproducibility. Kevin holds a MAS in Architecture-based Enterprise Systems Engineering and Leadership from UC San Diego and is pursuing a PhD in Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Kevin specializes in training and evaluating machine learning models for accuracy and reproducibility in applications like image recognition, time series prediction, and natural language processing.
