Free Documentary Screening: "Hiding in the Walls"

<Tagline>Join us in the AOK library on October 22nd.</Tagline>

Three weeks from now, UMBC’s AOK library will be hosting a public
screening for the upcoming documentary “Hiding in the Walls.” Centered on
environmental justice in Baltimore, the film focuses on a lead
poisoning epidemic that disproportionately affects poor neighborhoods and communities
of color. Historical discriminatory practices planted the seed for this silent
killer, and there is an unfortunate air of acceptance, rather than outrage,
that has allowed lead poisoning to perpetuate in urban areas. The filmmakers provide
firsthand accounts of adult survivors whose lives are irreparably, and
unjustly, impacted. “Hiding in the Walls” is an enriching film for those
wanting to become more educated on environmental justice issues in our own
    community.

“Hiding in the Walls” won Best Feature Film at the 2022
Social and Economic Justice Film Festival and the 2022 Gaia Prize for
    Environmental Filmmaking.

The documentary will be screened in the library on Tuesday,
October 22nd at 6:00 pm. There is no admission fee. The filmmakers
will be present for a Q&A once the film is finished, and refreshments will
be offered throughout. Non-GES students are of course welcome, so spread the
    word!

Dear UMBC Community,

Interim Policy on Time, Place, and Manner for Expressive Activities

The Supreme Court provides public institutions with discretion to determine the time, place, and manner of expressive activities.

Key provisions include:

Clear timelines and expectations for alerting campus administration of expressive activity

Designated and preferred demonstration areas where expressive activities can occur for university and non-university affiliates

Details on requirements when engaging in expressive activity to ensure there is not disruption to the business function of the university and to ensure ingress and egress areas are clear and accessible

Clear definitions for planned or spontaneous expressive activity

Conditions for facility use and signage

Bizu Gelaye, Ph.D., is a senior investigator and chief of the Epidemiology Branch in the Division of Population Health Research. His research focuses on: understanding the role preconception and perinatal psychosocial exposures (e.g., trauma exposure) play in shaping short- and long-term maternal and offspring health outcomes; studying how biological, molecular, environmental, social, and structural factors impact prematurity, particularly among racial and ethnic groups; and identifying evidence-based solutions that promote health equity and improve outcomes in maternal and child health through prevention, early diagnostics, therapeutics, and/or policy change. Before joining NICHD, Dr. Gelaye was a faculty member in the departments of epidemiology and psychiatry at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Gelaye received his doctoral and master’s degrees in epidemiology from the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle.

The vaccine concept incorporated in mRNA-1273 was designed by Dr. Corbett's NIH team from viral sequence and rapidly deployed to industry partner, Moderna, Inc., for Phase 1 clinical trial, which unprecedently began only 66 days from viral sequence release. mRNA-1273 was shown to be 94.1% effective in Phase 3 trial and is authorized for use in multiple countries. Alongside mRNA-1273, Dr. Corbett boasts a patent portfolio which also includes universal coronavirus and influenza vaccine concepts and novel therapeutic antibodies. In all, she has over 15 years of experience studying dengue virus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus, and coronaviruses, garnering several prestigious awards, such as the Benjamin Franklin Next Gen Award and the Salzman Memorial Award in Virology. Combining her research goals with her knack for mentorship, Dr. Corbett invests much of her time in underserved communities as an advocator of STEM education and vaccine awareness.

During her doctoral training, she investigated the influence of the microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in the lab of Dr. Sandra S. McAllister. Jessalyn completed her postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. Sean J. Morrison at the Children’s Research Institute (UT Southwestern, 2021). During her postdoctoral training, she discovered that melanoma cells in lymph nodes experience less oxidative stress and form more metastasis than melanoma cells in the blood. Jessalyn’s work suggests initial metastasis through lymph nodes allows the cells to survive subsequent metastasis through the blood by protecting cancer cells from lipid reactive oxygen species.https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/profile/jessalyn-ubellacker/

Idea Pitch Day – October 2, 2024

Hello Retriever Entrepreneurs! Do you have an idea that you would love to share with a community of entrepreneurs to receive feedback? This event is your opportunity!

The Alex. Brown Center’s next event of the semester will be held Wednesday, October 2nd from 11:30-1pm in Meyerhoff 120!

The Idea Pitch Day event is a great time to get feedback on your idea or existing business and find other students that might be interested in helping you as well as learning more about the Idea & Innovation Challenge. This is the perfect opportunity for students who want to enter the competition to informally pitch their idea to an audience as a way to receive feedback in a casual, relaxed setting.

If you aren't sure you're ready to submit an idea, that's OK! This event is a great time to get feedback on your preliminary idea or existing business, and to find other students interested in helping you. It will also give you a chance to learn more about the ABCEI's competitions and events.

Students, faculty, alumni, and members of the business community are welcome to attend! We hope to see you there!
