Shuman contributes to Earth Observatory IOTD
In a recent Earth Observatory Item of the Day (IOTD), Christopher Shuman (615/UMBC) contributed to the discussion about Iceberg A-83. "A Winter Wanderer in the Weddell Sea" is a feature about this particular iceberg, which broke away from the Brunt Ice Shelf in May 2024. While originally stuck in thick sea ice, the iceberg has had pieces break off and has made progress in its journey. Read more about the iceberg and the special data collection program LEAP.

Public Forum with NIH Director - 9/19 at 3pm ET
The Asian American Scholar Forum (AASF) invites you to join us at our upcoming public forum with NIH Director Dr. Monica M. Bertagnolli and Principal Deputy Director Lawrence A. Tabak. The event is taking place online tomorrow, Thursday, September 19 at 3pm ET, and you can register here. Additionally, we encourage you to anonymously submit questions for the NIH via our online form here.
After Dr. Bertagnolli’s recent statement in support of the Asian American and Asian immigrant scientists and scholars, as well as the NIH’s release of a decision matrix and memo guidance on how to assess potential foreign interference in research, we understand that our communities may have questions. As a result, AASF is bringing together this public forum and facilitating a space for folks to ask NIH any questions they may have. To encourage openness, questions submitted through the online form will be posed anonymously.
We hope you can attend and share widely with your networks. For ease, please find links to our social media posts here: X, LinkedIn, Instagram
With thanks,
Fatimah

Tulane Health Policy Case Competition
Cash awards for the winning team members!
UMBC students are encouraged to apply! UMBC Public Health is not affiliated with the competition. Please contact the Tulane SPH if you are interested.
Tulane Health Policy Case Competition
The Tulane Health Policy Case Competition allows teams of undergraduate students to apply their talents and knowledge to put together a solution to a given health policy program. Students will have an opportunity to interact with school faculty in the course of constructing their solutions. Top teams will present their solutions to a panel of experts for detailed feedback.
Teams of up to three undergraduate students create policy-based solutions to a given problem. A workshop will be provided shortly after the case is released. Teams will construct PowerPoint presentations on solutions to the problem. Finalists will present to a panel of judges for real-time feedback.
2024 Case Prompt
This case asks teams of undergraduate students to apply the lens of health policy analysis to the crisis of injuries in New Orleans. New Orleans is in one of the lowest-ranked counties for years of life lost to injury according to county health rankings. While much attention has been paid to injuries due to gun violence, other areas of injury (e.g., roadway deaths, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc.) In this scenario, the city has set aside $500,000 annually for an innovative solution to address these excess deaths. A good policy will leverage existing city infrastructure as appropriate and include detailed breakdowns of the costs of the policy package.
Award
Each member of the winning team will receive $1,000 in cash
