Abstract:

"Bangladesh, characterized by its vulnerability to a variety of hydrometeorological hazards, including floods, landslides, cyclones, and droughts, presents a critical context for the application of advanced geospatial technologies. This presentation will explore the integration of geospatial data and technologies in enhancing disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies within Bangladesh. By examining case studies and current practices in monitoring and managing these hazards, the discussion will highlight how satellite data, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS) have transformed hazard analysis, risk assessment, and emergency response strategies.

The talk will delve into specific instances where geospatial technologies have successfully mitigated disaster risks and will discuss the collaborative DRR efforts already in place, including those with local agencies and international bodies. Looking to the future, the presentation will identify persistent challenges that hinder the full potential of geospatial solutions in DRR, such as data inaccessibility, lack of technical expertise, and infrastructural limitations.

Moreover, the presentation will propose new avenues for collaboration, emphasizing the need for innovative climate change adaptation measures that integrate geospatial technologies. These collaborations could focus on enhancing data sharing agreements, co-developing web-based early warning systems, and fostering capacity building in data analytics among local researchers and practitioners. By fortifying partnerships and leveraging cutting-edge technologies and expertise, there is significant potential to advance the resilience of Bangladesh to hydrometeorological threats and to model similar collaborations globally. This dialogue aims to showcase past successes and also to pave the way for future joint ventures that align with both disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation goals."

Over the past 18 months DoIT has been working closely with the Office of Residential Life to test, pilot and redesign the wireless system throughout the residential complexes. This project is the culmination of that work and has been driven by the experience of student residents through Residential Student Association Townhalls, surveys, and other means of soliciting feedback from student residents. This project will improve wireless access for students and staff in residence halls by improving wireless coverage in key areas, adding faster WiFi 6 capabilities, and installing more than 2,500 new wireless access points.

This project could not be possible without tremendous effort of our student employees in the Network and Telecommunications teams of DoIT.

If you have any questions regarding this project, please click here to submit a request to the Network Team.

A Great Opportunity to Take GES 386 This Summer!

<Tagline>Get a leg-up on your GES coursework!</Tagline>

Here’s my advice as a fourth-year GES student: Take GES 386
as soon as possible! 386 is notorious for filling up quickly during the Fall
and Spring semesters. Luckily, if you’ve already taken 286 or if you’re a grad
student, you can beat the crowd!

Professor Kaylor will be teaching two sections of GES 386 during
UMBC’s Summer Session II. One section will meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 1pm,
and the other on Monday and Wednesday at 4:30pm. Each meeting will last about
2.5 hours with additional time allotted for working on assignments in the
    computer lab.

GES 386: “Introduction to GIS” explores analytical tools and
workflows that will give you the foundational skills to excel in GIS. The
six-week time frame will make the work schedule more compressed, but there will
be ample time for group collaboration and one-on-one time with the professor
    and TA.

The typical class meeting will include discussions of
ongoing and past assignments, a lecture or demonstration of new material, and
lab (computer) time. Work can be done independently or in small groups based on
that week’s topic. Lab assignments can be completed at home or in-person; you
can make that decision based on your schedule and what environment you work
    best in.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Charlie
Kaylor at ckaylor@umbc.edu. He is more
than happy to work with you to reach your goals!

Response to Motor Vehicle Thefts

<Tagline>Immediate steps include increased patrols, free locks</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

You have likely seen the recent notifications from UMBC police regarding motor vehicle thefts and attempted thefts on our campus. These incidents have taken place in parking garages, lots, and various streets and areas throughout the campus. It is deeply concerning that the perpetrators are targeting vehicles, particularly Hyundais and Kias, both during the day and at night.

I want to reassure you that we are treating this criminal activity with the utmost seriousness. To be clear, the safety of our community is our highest priority, and you should know that we are taking immediate steps to prevent further thefts.

Effective immediately, we have increased patrols of parking garages and lots as well as other parking spaces around campus, including around residence halls. Campus police officers will conduct hourly checks of these targeted areas in the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours. We have enlisted a private security company to provide us with additional vehicle patrols, enhancing our existing security measures.

We are also providing steering wheel locks free of charge at the UMBC Police Department for members of the campus community with university identification. Additionally, in the coming days, the university will deploy several mobile security cameras in and around parking areas to deter would-be thieves.

As always, we remind you to secure your vehicles by locking them and avoiding leaving valuables such as backpacks, purses, wallets, laptops and other electronics, and loose change inside. We also ask you to remain vigilant and attentive to your surroundings and promptly report suspicious activity to UMBC Police.

Again, the safety and security of our campus community is my highest priority. Thank you for your part in helping us deter and prevent further incidents of theft.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby
