Lee Blaney awarded funding to develop new ways to remove “forever chemicals” from water

Professor Lee Blaney, in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering, received $750,000 in funding from the Department of Defense’s Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) to develop new ways to remove substances dubbed “forever chemicals” from water.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are used in products ranging from cleaning products and clothing to fire-fighting foam. They earned the nickname “forever chemicals” because of the way they persist in the environment. PFAS have been linked to decreased fertility in women, developmental effects in children, reduced immune function, and increased risk of cancer and obesity. The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced limitations on the amount of certain PFAS in drinking water.

Current technology such as activated carbon and anion-exchange resins can effectively remove the most common PFAS found in water, but do not perform well at removing short- and ultrashort-chain PFAS (which have fewer than eight carbon atoms in their chemical structure.)

The award from SERDP will fund Blaney’s work to develop materials called adsorbents specifically designed for treatment of these short-chain PFAS. Blaney’s colleagues on the project include Ke He, Ph.D. ’17, chemical and biochemical engineering, an assistant research scientist at UMBC, Wenqing Xu, an associate professor in civil and environmental engineering at Villanova University, and Jessica Ray, an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Washington.

Amplifying the Voices of Women of Color

Why is it that women are expected to take up as little space as possible? In elevators, we’re always in the corners making room for others. On crowded sidewalks, we’re the first to let others pass us. In our classrooms and offices, we observe without ever speaking up even when we’re qualified to do so. We speak only when spoken to, which is even more true for women of color. I often find myself sitting in the back of classrooms and not raising my hand unless absolutely necessary, especially in classes with white professors and majority white students. Many of them are conditioned to advocate for themselves, so they tend to be the most vocal. Because of this, I don’t feel like I can raise my hand in class, even when I want to. While it may not be because of social conditioning, it could be that people are just not cognizant of when to take up space or when not to.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with white students raising their voices, except for when it’s at the expense of students of color. Historically, people of color and especially women of color have been left out of academic spaces in the US. Further, our histories have been erased or “whitewashed” in academia, which is why it’s even more important to amplify the voices of students of color when it comes to discourse around our histories and the intersecting issues affecting our communities. A 2012 study from Smith College explored Black students’ silence in classrooms at predominantly white institutions, and found that teaching material that centered around European-American history and culture influenced the silence of Black students.

Implementing the “Step Up, Step Back” model can be effective in ensuring that students have a fair chance at participating in discussions. Stepping back calls us to provide space for others that are willing and able to step up, and not take away their opportunity to contribute. If you are in the position to step up, you should first be aware of whether there is anyone else who can or should be the one to step up in that situation, and encourage them to do so, or rather, give them the space to do it. The silence may be uncomfortable at first, but we must give ourselves and others time to process before we raise our hand. Stepping back allows us to listen to someone else’s perspective that we would miss if we only heard our own voice. It’s very important to take the time to learn other perspectives, especially at a diverse school like UMBC.

Professors also play a huge role in how comfortable students feel engaging in their classes. They can encourage student participation by diversifying their content and literature from different backgrounds. Most times, we read outdated texts and learn about theories from white people, when we could implement more scholarship from people of color. It’s important to learn about new narratives regarding marginalized communities, because it can be damaging when we only ever learn about the same stories over again. For example when we learn about Black history, the struggle narrative is perpetuated by more emphasis being placed on learning about slavery and the Jim Crow era, rather than stories about Black people thriving. When negative messaging about one group is taught while another group is glorified, students of color have a hard time connecting with the content.

UMBC is supposed to be a model for diversity and inclusivity, but it is lacking in its content. It isn’t until students of color feel seen and welcome in their classes, that the university can truly reflect the values that it stands for.

Dear Colleagues,

We are writing to share with you the Fiscal Year 2025 salary guidelines, aligned with those received from the University System of Maryland for faculty and staff in Regular and Contingent II positions, together with UMBC's plan for implementing those guidelines.

Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)

All Regular faculty and staff, Contingent II staff, and graduate assistants will receive a 3 percent COLA increase, effective July 1, 2024. Eligible employees must have been on the university payroll since June 30, 2024, to be eligible for the COLA.

Merit Increases

A 2.5 percent merit pool, effective July 1, 2024, will be distributed to each division and applies to Regular faculty and staff and Contingent II staff. Merit increases will be based on a PMP overall rating of "effective" or better for the rating period of April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024 (if a PMP was not submitted for an eligible employee for that period, the overall rating will be considered "effective").

Regular nonexempt staff must have completed original and/or promotional probation by June 30, 2024, to be eligible for the merit increase. Nonexempt staff on original and/or promotional probation will receive a 2.5 percent increase upon their successful completion of the probationary period.

Regular exempt staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 15, 2024, to be considered for a merit increase.

Contingent II staff must have been in an eligible position prior to January 1, 2024, (nonexempt staff) or January 15, 2024, (exempt staff) to be considered for a merit increase.

Regular faculty must have accepted an offer prior to January 15, 2024, to be eligible for a merit increase.

Congratulations to Zachary Margulies - Phi Kappa Phi

Title of research: Building a Dialogue Classification System for Human-Robot Interaction

Mentors: Cynthia Matuszek, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

Abstract: Our work revolves around understanding and making use of the SCOUT (Situated Corpus of Understanding Transactions) data, a corpus of human-robot dialogue for an Urban Search & Rescue scenario. In this dataset, a human “commander” gives instructions to a robot that is navigating an urban setting. We have conducted an extensive user study in which participants were asked to select the most appropriate robot action in response to a human instruction (sampled from the SCOUT data). We determined the classification accuracy of participant-selected robot actions compared to the corresponding real output performed by the robot. Then, using a random forest classifier we built a system to translate the human commands into robot actions. Treating the user study as a baseline, we evaluated the performance of our new classifier. In future studies, we will implement a more sophisticated transformer-based model to more effectively classify dialogue.

However, there are numerous external and internal barriers that prevent certain groups from harnessing these pieces of general advice. Those who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and are between the ages of 18-24, in particular, are one of many marginalized groups who experience high difficulty in finding work, obtaining advice on housing, and utilizing any means of transportation. Furthermore, even when Autistic people manage to fall under at least one of these three realms, they often experience more workplace discrimination, housing discrimination, and limited means of transportation, in comparison to their neurotypical counterparts. This research is divided into three sections: the workplace, housing, and transportation. In order to identify how Autistic individuals fair in these three life-sectors in comparison to neurotypical people, I am analyzing eight academic peer-reviewed journals per topic in conjunction with a campus wide survey which will gather thirty responses anonymously from voluntary participants. From there, I will produce a three episode podcast to combine and relay these findings as part of a public humanities project.
