JHU Summer Internship Genomics and Society Mentorship Program, Applications Open From the JHU Genomics and Society Mentorship Program. This is a competitive opportunity and can be used as the required internship for eligible students. 

I am *thrilled* to share that we have figured out a way to hold GSMP this summer as we wait for a decision about our grant renewal! As such, we have just opened the application! I am reaching out to ask you to share this information with advisees and students in your university who you think might be interested in our summer internship opportunity focused on the ethical, legal, and social implications of genetics and genomics.

The GSMP is open to undergraduate students interested in the ethics of science, clinical care, and/or public health and provides an opportunity for training, research, mentorship, and network development guided by the Berman Institutes' renowned faculty. We would like to connect with your students to discuss the program by offering a virtual information session via Zoom on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 12:00pm (zoom link).

We usually open applications in November and close February 1st; our recruitment was delayed this year, so we are running an accelerated recruitment period and keeping our application open until 11:59pm on February 15th. Our decisions will come out on the same schedule as in past years, in the first half of March.

From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9 and Wednesday, January 10, DoIT will conduct maintenance on our legacy (Siemens Rolm) phone system. 


UMBC Police and other emergency phone services around campus, as well as users who've transitioned to the new phone system, should see no impact in service.


This will only affect community members with the older, beige desk phones that are still receiving service from the legacy phone system. This planned maintenance window is to make engineering changes to prepare for the last stages of migration from this phone system and ensure we can smoothly transition the remaining services.

The objective of the Topical Group is the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the interdisciplinary area of nonequilibrium statistical physics. This area encompasses nonlinear science from dynamical systems and chaos, through pattern formation and spatio-temporal chaos, to fluid turbulence and complex systems. Also of prime interest are concepts of statistical mechanics, especially in their application to nonequilibrium systems as exemplified in the emerging field of "soft condensed matter physics". These include but are not limited to granular media, foams and emulsions, colloids, biomolecules, networks, polymers, dynamics of biological systems, and fracture dynamics. The Group encourages research and applications in these areas and promotes international cooperation.

As member of the chair line, Dr. Deffner will serve over the next four years as Vice Chair, Chair-Elect, Chair, and Past Chair.
