I am delighted to invite you to participate in our Winter Commencement ceremonies. You have played important roles in supporting our students throughout their journeys at UMBC, and so I hope you will join me in celebrating graduates and their families at the ceremonies.

Please join us for the Graduate School ceremony on December 20 at 10 a.m. and the undergraduate ceremony on December 21 at 10 a.m. Faculty and staff who wish to march in the procession should sign up and order their regalia as soon as possible. INDS advisors will be presenting to students on Monday, October 16 at noon in UC 115 about the option to design an individualized major related to neuroscience, neurobiology, neuropsychology… anything neuro-related!  

 

In addition to learning about the INDS major, you will hear from a current INDS student and an alumnae (connecting virtually) who will discuss why they chose INDS and their journey through the major. Our alum (INDS degree titled "Neurogenetics") is a PhD candidate in Clinical Psychology who was initially a double major in Biochemistry and Psychology with goals of attending medical school.

 This event will take place TODAY, Monday, October 16, from 12-1 PM in UC 115.

The Student Success Workshop Series is a valuable resource for any student looking to be more prepared! Other topics offered this month include strategies to combat burnout, and how to take an “academic reset” after a disappointing academic performance.

It's that time of year again to protect yourself, your family and your community from current and upcoming infectious diseases!  Sign up now for this season's flu shot and the new COVID-19 vaccine just approved and recommended for everyone aged 6 months and above.  In addition, other vaccines against meningitis, RSV, shingles, tetanus and others will be available.  Talk with your personal medical provider to see what they recommend for you.  This event is open to students, faculty, staff and their families ages 12+.


Remember that a COVID infection and isolation can interrupt your studies, your work, and other important events in your life. Reduce this risk by getting vaccinated.

Mark S. Chang (UMBC '99)

On this episode we hear a rebroadcast of the 2023 UMBC Constitution Day Lecture, organized by the Department of Political Science and cosponsored by UMBC's Center for Social Science Scholarship.

The lecture, which took place in September of 2023, was given by keynote speaker Delegate Mark S. Chang. Delegate Chang has represented the 32nd District in the Maryland House of Delegates (Anne Arundel County) since 2015, and also serves as the Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee, among a variety of other vital committee positions in our state legislature. Delegate Chang received a B.A. in Psychology from UMBC in 1999, making him a proud UMBC social science alumnus!

A run-down of advising at UMBC

Believe it or not, next month it will be time to register for the spring semester! Academic Advisors are ready and eager to chat with you about your academic progress and answer your questions about spring classes.

The Spring 2024 schedule of classes will be available on Monday, October 23rd and you should plan to meet with your Academic Advisor before your registration appointment date. At UMBC, students must meet with their advisor before registering for the next semester.

Your academic advisor is a vital member of your academic support team and someone we recommend you connect with regularly to take full advantage of their support when it comes to:

  • Your adjustment to college
  • Major and career choices
  • Course selection
  • Long-term academic planning
  • Academic difficulty
  • Academic "extras" such as minors, internships, education abroad, etc.  

Before your advising appointment, you can review your degree card on your myUMBC Profile. This allows you to:

  • Access your Academic Advisor’s contact information
  • Develop and update your degree plan
  • Check your degree progress
  • See how coursework transferred over from your previous institution
  • Access suggested four-year pathways for completing your degree program  

Additionally, you can develop a list of questions/topics to discuss with your Academic Advisor in order to structure your meeting. To help with that conversation, ask yourself:

  • How am I doing in my major?
  • Do I need to make any changes or seek academic support next semester?
  • How long will it take me to complete all my coursework?
  • Does my academic plan contain all my GEPs, upper-level credits, and writing intensive?
  • Should I plan to take a winter class?
  • Are there other topics I'm interested in exploring by adding a minor or certificate program?
  • What’s the best way to get in touch with you if I have further questions?
