Department of Physics Welcomes Dr. Alexander Senichev

Alexander Senichev is joining the Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor. His research focuses on experimental quantum photonics, with emphasis on solid-state quantum emitters and the control of light-matter interactions in nanophotonic structures. His work lies at the intersection of optical spectroscopy, quantum optics, and materials science. In his lab, he will develop and study quantum photonic systems for efficient generation of quantum states of light compatible with on-chip integration and semiconductor manufacturing. This research supports the development of scalable platforms for quantum communication, sensing, and information processing.

Alexander Senichev received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from Saint Petersburg State University, Russia, and his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) from the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics and Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. During his doctoral research, he used near-field spectral imaging to study the optical properties of semiconductor nanowires and their relationship to crystal structure. After completing his Ph.D., he joined the Quantum Semiconductor Systems Group at Purdue University as a postdoctoral researcher, where he worked on III-nitride semiconductor materials for optoelectronic devices. He later continued at Purdue University as a research scientist, focusing on solid-state quantum photonics and the development of scalable single-photon emitters compatible with integrated photonic circuits.

At UMBC, Alexander looks forward to building a research program in this area and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students through collaborative experimental research. His group will work with colleagues across the department and with researchers at universities and national laboratories to advance quantum photonic systems and technologies.

This course concentrates on different lines of argumentation to explain the emergence of the Greek "city-state" from the beginning of the Iron Age until the beginning of the Classical Period (ca. 1000–500 BCE). If focuses not just on the renowned examples of Athens and Sparta, known well from history and literature, but also on other small polities and confederations with different political organization. Discussion considers urban geography, settlement pattern data, written inscriptions, and competitive monument building at Panhellenic sanctuaries, among other lines of evidence.

On Monday, February 2, the Center for Democracy and Civic Life will host Dinner with Friends, an engaging, facilitated conversation that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community.

Our conversations will be focused on two interrelated questions:

"How do you live a life that sustains you?"

We will explore challenges with thriving, share resources to support thriving, and generate ideas about how we, as a UMBC community, can improve thriving on campus.

Inclement Weather Update - Campus Closed Wednesday, January 28

Dear UMBC Community,

As crews continue to work to address road and walkway conditions related to this weekend's inclement weather, UMBC's physical campus will remain closed until 5 a.m., Thursday, January 29, 2026. We will continue to evaluate conditions for Thursday and Friday so please check your text and email for updates.

All in-person and remote (synchronous) classes will begin on Thursday, January 29, unless further closings or delays are announced. Asynchronous online classes will occur as scheduled, and instructors are encouraged to consider asynchronous learning to make up for missed class time this week. Students are encouraged to check Blackboard and their University email for updates on academic coursework, as faculty may implement asynchronous learning.

Residential students will continue to receive instructions from the Office of Residential Life via email regarding any updates around move-in, dining options, and other support services.

All employees should refer to the Guidance for Employees section and matrix at the bottom of the Inclement Weather and Emergency Closing Guide to find guidance for leave during spring semester. If you have a telework or remote agreement you should work virtually (unless arrangements have been made with your supervisor). We ask that supervisors be flexible as conditions change and responsibilities vary; allowing an adaptable schedule or liberal leave for employees who are working virtually is appropriate. Your safety is our top priority.

Thank you to the many campus employees who continue to work diligently to make the campus safe for our community.

Sincerely,

Manfred H. M. van Dulmen
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
