Important Update: Legacy Travel System Pre-Approvals Ending December 12

Dear UMBC Community,

Effective December 12, 2025, you will no longer be able to create new Pre-Approvals in the Legacy Travel System. All new travel pre-approvals must be submitted in SAP Concur starting on this date.

We've seen strong adoption of Concur over the past several weeks, and many travelers are already benefiting from its modern interface, integrated booking tools, and faster, more accurate processing.

Planning Travel After Spring Break?

Please begin using SAP Concur now. We expect to fully retire the Legacy System before the end of the spring semester, and shifting early will help avoid delays.

Support & Training

All resources are available at travel.umbc.edu, including:

Training for Travelers, Arrangers, and Approvers (in-person, virtual, and recorded sessions)

Step-by-step How-To Guides

Updated Interim Travel Policy and procedures

FAQs and workflow charts

Information on booking, discounts, and travel partners

Need Help?

SAP Concur provides 24/7 global support, including:

Live chat

Phone support

Help & Learning Center

In-system guidance

This support is available anytime, anywhere—especially helpful while traveling.

Business Services is also here to assist during normal business hours for UMBC-specific questions. Travel@umbc.edu

Student Internship Spotlight: Constellation

<Tagline>‘27 Chemical Engineering - Environmental & Sustainability</Tagline>

Where was your internship?

Constellation

When was your internship?

May 2025 to August 2025

What was the focus of your internship?

My focus was working in Constellation's nuclear power plant located in Lusby, MD in an intern capacity for the Chemistry department.

What was the best part of your internship OR what was the biggest learning moment of your internship?

The best part of my summer internship was getting to do hands-on work in the field. It was a wonderful change of pace from a semester of textbook work. I was able to apply what I had learned during my time at UMBC in order to assist the chemists when they were taking samples in the plant and bringing it back to the lab for analysis. I enjoyed working with the chemists to learn how they take samples in a radioactive environment and what the results of each sample means for the health of the plant. It was a wonderful learning experience seeing just how safe and structured work in a nuclear power plant is.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting an internship?

My advice for anyone interested in doing research or internship work is to not be afraid to branch out. Just because you are studying one specific subject, does not mean you won't be able to apply what you have learned elsewhere. With that, you should not fear rejection either as you keep your options expanded. You might find that you really do enjoy air quality work over fabric synthesis or vice versa. Just being open and willing to learn new things will take you most of the way.

What are your goals after graduation?

My goal after graduating in a few years is to continue working in the energy sector. My passion is making a difference in the clean production of electricity.

Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?

I am a student ambassador for CBEE and attend "American Chemical Society" club meetings.

Student Research Spotlight: Wistar Institute at UPenn and Schulman Lab at Johns Hopkins University

<Tagline>'27 Chemical Engineering - Biotechnology & Bioengineering</Tagline>

Damilola Fapohunda
‘27 Chemical Engineering - Biotechnology & Bioengineering Track

Where was your research experience?

I did an REU Internship at the Wistar Institute at UPenn, and I’m currently a research assistant in the at the Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering.

When was your research experience?

I did my internship during the summer of 2023, and I’ve been working at the Schulman lab since January 2024. My research position will be until I graduate.

What was the focus of your research?

My internship was focused on using lentiviral vectors to over express certain proteins in mammalian cells; those proteins are involved in stem cell differentiation.

The research I’m currently involved in is characterizing RNase H, an enzyme that will be used along with other RNases and RNA Polymerase in a real time monitoring molecular logic circuit.

What was the best part of your research experience OR what was the biggest learning moment of your research experience?

I really enjoyed my REU internship because it was my first time doing real research outside of school, and I learned so much about the world of academia and about grad school, and I loved living in Philly.

I have enjoyed my current research for the same reasons, and also because I’ve had the opportunity to attend conferences and meet so many cool people. I also enjoy having a mentor who’s in my field, so I can talk to her about many different things related to grad school, academics, and career prospects.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research?

The best thing to do is just cold email every professor you can find, even if it’s not what you think you would want to do. You will be surprised how interconnected a lot of stem research is, and it’s good to branch out and try different things.

What are your goals after graduation?

I would like to move out of the country and do research in botanics and traditional medicine.

Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?

Co-President of the Physical Chemistry Club
