Congratulations to the UMBC Cyber Dawgs for winning the 15th Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC) which was held this Friday and Saturday. UMBC placed first in a field of teams from eight Universities who made the regional finals out of an initial set of 27 qualifying teams. By winning the regional competition, UMBC will represent the Mid-Atlantic states in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition to be held on May 22-24, 2020.

The MACCDC has been held annually since 2006. Each year, it develops a new realistic challenge using the latest technologies currently in use. This year’s scenario involves student teams working for a fictitious Artificially Intelligent Institute (AII), a multinational corporation with offices in the Mid-Atlantic region. It was described as follows.

“As a leading provider of advanced AI surveillance tools to intelligence and law enforcement agencies, as well as private-sector organizations, the main business driver of AII is to show how new surveillance capabilities are transforming government’s and organization’s monitoring capabilities. As part of their duties, Blue Teams are expected to defend their systems against aggressors. Early intelligence reports suggest that rouge Hackistanian antagonist are interested in stealing AII’s intellectual property, source code, and customer database. Hackers contracted and working directly for the country of Hackistan are also interested in disrupting IoT devices on-premises at the various AII regional offices.”

The MACCDC team was chosen from members of the CyberDawgs student group, composed of students from a variety of majors who share a common interest in computer and network security. No prior experience is required to join and any UMBC students who want to learn more about cybersecurity and learn new skills in the field are encouraged to subscribe to its mailing list and attend meetings.

The CyberDawgs group is advised by CSEE faculty Charles Nicholas and Richard Forno.

The post UMBC Cyber Dawgs win 15th Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition appeared first on Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Instead of presenting your slide to the whole group at a GBM, you will be making a slide to share virtually. You are asked to create a slide introducing who you are, as well as fill out a google form that explains why you want the position you are running for. Think of the google form as your speech and your slide as the visual for that speech. Any member that has attained three membership points THIS YEAR may run for any position. The positions are: President, Vice President, Events Coordinator, PR Chair, and Treasurer. Instructions are fully detailed in the google docs.
URCAD Sneak Peek: Joanna Bigelow

<Tagline>Portraits: An Exploration of the Human Spirit</Tagline>

Artist's Statement:

My goal in creating a piece of art is to convey the truth that lies in beauty. My focus in my work is creating solid forms and expressing rhythm in the face and the body. My style is a mix of realism and impressionism. I work primarily with charcoal and oil paint, but I am also adept at working in digital media and 3-D design. My medium and approach are often seen as traditional, but I desire to show the sacredness of nature and humanity. I am always in a state of learning. My approach is to constantly re-invent and conceptualize the way I see things. My work, as a result, has a life of its own and a sense of balance.

Last July, UMBC senior Karina Martinez’s world crashed down around her when an auto accident left her with two broken arms and a totaled car.

In a matter of moments, reality set in. Surgery and recovery would take at least three weeks. And even after that, without a car, she couldn’t get to school or her part-time server job, much less the required field placement she needed to complete to graduate. Her manager gave her a less physically-taxing hostess position, but losing a month’s work and switching from tip wages to hourly left Martinez in a real bind.

“I had bills I had to pay, I had a balance with UMBC on a summer course I took that summer, and I was looking to see if I could somehow buy a car for my commutes,” says Martinez, a social work and psychology major set to graduate from UMBC’s Shady Grove campus this spring.

“I thought about dropping some classes so I could work more to be able to pay off my UMBC balance but then my sister told me I should look into seeing if UMBC has an emergency fund for students.”

Addressing Emergency Needs

UMBC’s Stay Black and Gold Emergency Fund is an initiative of the Student Government Association that provides emergency funding in awards ranging from $1,000 to $8,000 depending on needs arising from unexpected crises ranging from accidents to house fires, deaths of parents, loss of jobs and other sudden losses of income that could prevent the continuation of classes.

In the past year, five students have received funding, but as the world confronts the COVID-19 pandemic, this fund will become even more important for student success, explains Vice President for Institutional Advancement Greg Simmons, M.P.P. ’04, public policy.

“The Stay Black and Gold Emergency Fund acknowledges that sometimes we are faced with circumstances we could not have predicted and we need help from others,” he says. “Donors who give to this fund are committed to helping us do all we can to help students finish their degrees in the face of challenges they hadn’t expected, and in some cases hadn’t even imagined could be true.”

Last week, longtime UMBC supporters George and Betsy Sherman made a pledge of $25,000 to reinforce the fund, and other individual donations have been coming in steadily, including gifts from more than 40 new donors since a call went out for help yesterday.

Supporters have also been making donations to support UMBC’s Retriever Essentials Food Pantry, which offers dry goods and toiletries to students with those ongoing needs. Going forward, both of these funds will be crucial in helping UMBC students affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Like many universities across the country creating similar support systems for their students, UMBC will continue to try to grow its resources to respond to its community’s needs.

A Much-Needed Helping Hand

“When the committee approved me for the scholarship it was a relief off my shoulders knowing that I would not have to drop my classes in order to work more to pay off my balance and that most importantly that I would be able to graduate this year,” said Martinez, who has been accepted into the University of Maryland Baltimore’s advanced standing master’s of social work program in the fall.

As someone who hopes to eventually work in child welfare, she keenly appreciates what it means to be on the other end of the helping hand.

“Unfortunately, sometimes unexpected things happen not to just students but, to people in general, so having funds like this available to them really makes a difference,” she says. “For me it was allowing me to graduate on time with my class. So, thank you so much for donating, it is much appreciated.”

Support UMBC’s Stay Black and Gold Emergency Fund here.

FULBRIGHT INFORMATION SESSION

<Tagline>Come learn about the Fulbright Program</Tagline>

Have you ever thought about living abroad for a year after you graduate? Are you interested in teaching English? Doing independent research? Enrolling in graduate school? Then come hear about the FULBRIGHT PROGRAM!

This information session is open to all students, undergraduates and graduates, and is being sponsored by HAPPCOM & ANTH Club. The session will be led by Dr. Souders who coaches UMBC students through (our very successful!) Fulbright application process.

Each April, SAHAP has invited Dr. Souders to come speak to our students to help them learn about the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, the opportunities it can offer new UMBC graduates, as well as ways to get started with the application process -- and this year is no different! Except, well, except for a lot of things -- like we will be hosting this online through WebEx.

As Dr. Souders, UMBC's Fulbright Program Advisor, writes, "UMBC has a strong tradition of having its academically strong, globally minded students apply for the Fulbright U.S Student Program in order to conduct research, teach English, or earn a Master's degree overseas after graduation. Last year, UMBC was named a Top Producing Fulbright Institution, with thirteen students and recent alumni receiving this prestigious award." The Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy Department looks forward to working with you to join their ranks!

So join us! Just click on https://umbc.webex.com/meet/bchapin to join our WebEx meeting. And if you have a minute before then or want more information but can't join us, fill out your information here: Wednesday, April 8 at 12:00 pm -- and please feel free to contact Dr. Souders at<fulbright@umbc.edu> if you have any questions.
