UMBC's 2020 Virtual Sexual Assault Awareness Month

<Tagline>We see you. We believe you. You matter.</Tagline>

Sexual Assault Awareness Month brings people together to create and generate discussion and skill-building on how to prevent sexual violence in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While providing support and care to survivors of sexual violence is an everyday action, this awareness month also carves out intentional moments to honor and believe survivors’ stories and experiences. As we all do our part to flatten the curve during this public health crisis, we won’t be able to physically come together this April to do this critical work. The Women’s Center and all of our campus partners including the Office of Equity and Inclusion, University Health Services, the Counseling Center, Green Dot, We Believe You, and Retriever Courage, and more will nonetheless continue to promote awareness and prevention this month.

We are inviting our UMBC community to join our efforts.

Get Involved:

Learn - Each week during April, the Women’s Center will be focusing on various topics and issues related to sexual violence awareness and prevention (see attached flyer). Follow us on social media (Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram) to watch videos, read articles, and engage in other content for learning and skill-building. Leave us comments or ask questions. We also hope to offer some virtual discussions over the month to engage as a community in this learning. Stay tuned to the Women’s Center’s myUMBC for more details.

Create - We are redesigning the Clothesline Project and parts of Take Back the Night for a virtual setting that honors survivors’ stories and creates space for community members to hold and validate these stories. Survivors of sexual violence/power-based violence are invited to share their stories so others in our community may still bear witness. The Women’s Center will share these stories in a virtual Clothesline Project and zine project: “Survivors to the Front: A Call to Witness”.

Come Together - The We Believe You discussion groupwill still be meeting weekly. Survivors of power-based violence are welcomed to join this virtual community hosted by the Women’s Center with support from the We Believe You student org. Email womenscenter@umbc.edu for more details on how you can join this virtual discussion.

The events, activism, discussions, support, and stories that stem from Sexual Assault Awareness Month are some of the Women’s Center’s most significant and special. As we make adjustments to our calendar and move programming online, we want students to know that it is okay to grieve Take Back the Night and our other annual traditions. We are alongside you in that grieving process, and we hope that in these extraordinary times, we can continue to act with extraordinary compassion and conscientiousness to prevent sexual violence at UMBC and beyond.

And, remember, no matter where you are, dear survivors, we see you. We believe you. You matter. Always.

Additionally, throughout this time of distance learning, campus staff are still here and available for support. Do not hesitate to reach out for questions, concerns, or care.

Mutual Aid: One for All and All for One

Nandi is a student staff member in the Women’s Center and a Junior English major.

Mutual aid, as a concept, is based in anarchism and the work of Petr Kropotkin. His work, “Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution”, is a foundational text for anarchists and other communist movements. But really, you don’t have to be an anarchist or a communist, or know anything about these ideologies to practice mutual aid because it’s an extremely simple concept.

Basically, the theory supposes that people (and other creatures) are FAR more inclined to taking care of each other than they are to individualism, no matter how much our capitalist ruling class argues to the contrary. The Seattle-based collective Big Door Brigade defines the practical application of mutual aid as “when people get together to meet each other’s basic survival needs with a shared understanding that the systems we live under are not going to meet our needs and we can do it together RIGHT NOW!” They also make the point that it is a separate and distinct practice from charity and charitable organizations.

Historically, mutual aid looks a lot of different ways. The Free African Society in 1787 was an organization meant to provide aid amongst free Black people. In the 20th century, there were Italian-American organizations called Societa di Mutuo Soccorso and Mexican-American societies called Sociedad Mutualistas. Larger worker movements and labor unions are also a part of this tradition as they necessitate collaboration and care work as a means to stay afloat while struggling for rights. Labor organizing in the US is at its lowest point in decades, but that doesn’t mean that we still can’t connect to our communities right now in the present to help everyone survive.

In feminist movements, mutual aid is a thread that runs throughout as an ongoing necessity among those who are oppressed under patriarchy. It’s not hard to see why; power-based violence, hiring discrimination, and wage gaps all team up to make people of oppressed genders dependent on one another rather than the institutions that their oppressors control.

Anarchist Feminist flag

The Association for Women’s Rights in Development has mutual aid as a key piece of their “Solidarity Economy”, an economy in which people’s relationship to goods and services is more sustainable and cooperative. To go along with that, anarchist feminism interprets the labeling of actions like sharing, compassion, and sensitivity as “feminine” to mean that these are direct challenges to the “masculine” hierarchy.

Maybe you’ve seen mutual aid mentioned on social media in the past few weeks, or maybe you haven’t. Right now, due to COVID-19, we’re all in a position to rely on one another for safety and survival. We usually think of networking as a means to further ourselves towards our own goals and ambitions. Now is a time to network with the people in our neighborhoods and communities for our common good. Practicing mutual aid doesn’t mean that everyone has to gather and social distancing has to go out the window because those are important things to do for our communities as well.

If in reaching out you find a need that you can fill, then do so! If someone in your network has access to resources that you can’t find, then make your own needs known! As capable and resourceful as we are, self-reliance is not the order of the day. Lean into your human inclinations towards care and comradeship to make it through.

Hundreds of mutual aid groups have popped up all over the country in the past month to address the dire straits we now find ourselves in, with most of them being led by the organizers who dedicate their lives to this work every day.

To find one near you, you can go to the interactive map on mutualaidhub.org, or this list posted on the Its Going Down digital community center. Its Going Down also has organizing guides and resources so that you don’t have to go into this unlearned. I’ve put in for the Baltimore Maroon Movement!

As we end Women's History Month during this period of COVID-19 remote work, learning and social distance, we find ourselves looking for diversions and engagement while we are staying-at-home. We've curated a global who's-who of women who identify as having a vision-related disability and have led historic and noteworthy lives and provided links for a deeper dive into their lives and experiences:

Helen Keller has spent her life as a speaker, author and advocate for people with disabilities, and her biography is posted on the American Federation of the Blind's website (link). She is also the namesake for Helen Keller Services (link), which has a Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults, as well as services for people who are blind.

Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree in 1849, and lost sight in her left eye while treating an infant with an infection. In 1875 she helped found the London School of Medicine, where she taught as a professor until 1907. More about her life can be found on the Amazing Women in History site (link).

Trischa Zorn was born without irises and is the most medaled Paralympian of all time. When not working in athletic endeavors, she taught science as an educator and went on to become an attorney. She shares more about her journey on her website (link).
Applied Learning Experiences During COVID-19

Dear UMBC Community,

As we continue to monitor the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and community remains the highest priority. In light of Governor Hogan’s Executive Orders and under the leadership and guidance from the University System of Maryland, UMBC is taking action to further mitigate the outbreak and protect the members of the campus community and the public.

Consequently, I have issued a Directive for Applied Learning Experiences During COVID-19 to be effective immediately for students involved in University-recognized Internships, Cooperative Education, Research Experiences, Field Placement, and Service-Learning & Community Engagement activities (credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing). Students must transition to a fully online/remote or alternative learning environment with their host site/organization. I am also urging students involved in non-University-recognized applied learning experiences to transition to a fully online/remote arrangement with their host site/organization. I understand the challenges that this directive may pose and recognize that not all activities will lend themselves to this change, but the University’s decision to prioritize health and safety is paramount.

Additional information is available here and will be updated as new details become available.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you all for everything you are doing and the support you are providing to all of us as we navigate this difficult time.

Updates Regarding Fall 2020 Study Abroad

We're glad that you have expressed an interest in or have already started the process to study abroad. Given the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, we anticipate that you may have questions about upcoming study abroad experiences and want to give you as much information as possible so you can plan accordingly. Currently, review of study abroad applications for Fall 2020 is on hold as we continue to assess the situation caused by COVID-19.We plan to make a decision in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we are happy to answer any questions to the best of our ability but we encourage you to weigh your options and make the best decision you can for yourself given the information you have now. We have attempted to answer some of the commonly raised questions below:

Can I defer my study abroad to a future term?
Yes. If you would like to defer your study abroad to a future term, please send an email to educationabroad@umbc.edu so we can update your information in our application portal. Don't forget to tell us which term you would like to go. Starting in August, we intend to start accepting applications for Winter 2021 and Spring 2021.

I no longer want to study abroad during my time at UMBC. How do I withdraw my application?
If you are no longer interested in studying abroad, please let us know by sending an email to educationabroad@umbc.edu so we can update your information in the application portal. If you have applied to an affiliated partner, please be sure to notify them as well and follow their processes for withdrawing your application.

Can I start a new application for Fall 2020 study abroad?
Given the global pandemic, we have temporarily suspended new applications and payment of application fees related to Fall 2020 study abroad.

If I have already started an application for study abroad in the fall or my application is pending review, will my application be processed?
Application processing for Fall 2020 is currently on hold. If you have already applied to an affiliated partner program, you can contact the provider to check on the status of your application. Please be sure to ask about their refund policy should your program not be able to proceed.

If my application has already been approved in the application portal should I move forward with the next steps in the process?
We recommend holding off on the next steps in the process for now. Given that many of our partner institutions and affiliate providers are still assisting spring students at this time, consulates around the world are suspending visa services, and travel restrictions are preventing free movement globally, we feel this is the appropriate approach.

What if the deadlines for next steps are coming up?

Since Fall 2020 study abroad is currently on hold, UMBC is unable to make nominations for student placements at this time. All applicants will be notified when and if this situation changes. Unfortunately, some partners and affiliates may not accept late nominations. Students should consider backup options in case their first choice is no longer available.

What if my study abroad program is suspended for the fall?
If your Fall 2020 study abroad program is suspended, you will receive a refund of your UMBC application fee (if already paid). If you have applied to an affiliated partner program, we recommend checking with the provider now to find out what their refund policies are in case of program cancellation or the suspension of study abroad by UMBC for the fall. UMBC is not able to refund fees paid to affiliated partner organizations.

Please be advised that UMBC has an international travel policy that prohibits student travel to any location that has a Department of State Travel Advisory of 3 or 4 or a CDC Travel Advisory of 3. At this time, these advisories apply to every country.

What if my program requires a deposit?

We do not recommend that you move forward with a program deposit unless it is refundable. Be sure to check with your program to determine if and under which conditions it is refundable.

Should I register for UMBC courses for the fall semester?
Yes. We recommend all students enroll in regular courses through UMBC for Fall 2020 just in case. Your UMBC courses can be dropped from your schedule later if you are able to proceed with your study abroad plans.

Should I register for housing for the fall?
Yes, if you are eligible for UMBC housing. You can be released from University housing later if you are able to move forward with your study abroad plans.

Where can I find more information?
Our office will email you if anything changes pertaining to study abroad for the Fall 2020 semester. Continue to check your email regularly for communication from the University and visit UMBC's dedicated webpage for COVID-19 for the most up-to-date information at https://covid19.umbc.edu/

We thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time. Please keep in mind that decisions are being made with the safety of our students as our top priority and with the best information available at the time.

Fake DocuSign Phishing Message

<Tagline>Look out for fake DocuSign Messages</Tagline>

Yesterday morning, between 8:45am and 10:00am, several UMBC users received DocuSign messages offering access to a document called “News Update.pdf” with a button labeled “View Document Now”.

The From address of the email “dse_docusign2@docusign.umbc.edu” was forged. This message did not originate from the UMBC’s DocuSign system. It is, however, an unusually good design for a phishing attack.

In the current work climate, it is easy to overlook unusual features of messages we get in our UMBC email inboxes. We are also using tools, like Docusign, more than ever. There are people who will try to take advantage of that. While the source of this message is currently under investigation, DoIT wanted to share some of the key features of this message that raise suspicions about its origin.

Example of Malicious DocuSign Forgery:

    <colgroup></colgroup>

In the example above there are some tell-tale signs that should raise suspicions.

The message begins with the salutation “DocuSign,” and is from “The DocuSign Team”. They seem to be addressing themselves.

There is no “DocuSign Team”. DocuSign notifications are from UMBC staff.

The From: header in the upper left says “dse_docusign2@docusign.umbc.edu”. In an actual docusign message, that header would be something like “Andy Johnston via DocuSign <dse_na2@docusign.net>”

DocuSign message subjects normally start with the words “Please DocuSign”. This one does not.

The point of DocuSign is to be able to verify, by signing, that you have received a document. There is no reason to do that for a news update. UMBC News is sent out in regular email messages.

Did You Click on the Button?

If you are one of the people who got this message and clicked on the button, you should have gotten this message:

If you selected ‘Proceed’, you would probably have gotten a message that the page was unreachable or the link was invalid. If you got anything else, please submit a ticket to security@umbc.edu so that we can contact you.

Home Network Security

<Tagline>As we all work and study at home, we need to stay secure.</Tagline>

If you are part of the UMBC community and are reading this in the spring of 2020, then you are very likely working and/or teaching and/or learning from home over the Internet. In most cases, you have an Internet provider such as Comcast or Verizon and you have a router in your home to connect to them. The router is your gateway to the Internet. It is also the Internet’s gateway to you. (See links below for information about recently discovered vulnerabilities in home routers.)

The Basics

For most people, the home router does two things.

It creates a small network that your devices can access either through WiFi or through a cable physically connected to the router.

It also connects that little network to your provider and, through them, to the Internet.

Your router comes out of the box pretty much ready to go to work for you, but it’s not usually as secure as it could or should be. There are a number of settings, especially in older routers, that should be verified or changed to make sure that:

No one joins your small home network without your knowledge and permission.

No one out on the Internet can tell the router to behave in ways you don’t want it to.

How you view and change these settings will vary with the make and model of your router. There are some links at the end which may help you, but your best bet is to get the make and model of your router (usually printed on the back or the bottom) and search for them on Google, Bing, or some other search service. Include terms like “setup”, “manual” and “secure”. Try to use a site belonging to the router’s manufacturer. (You will probably be accessing your router through a web browser on your home network.)

Here is an initial to-do list:

Secure your wireless connection

This is the connection between your wireless devices (laptop, tablet, etc.) and your router on the “small network” in your house. Make sure encryption is enabled and set to WPA2 or WPA3. If there is an option for WPS encryption, disable it if possible. If not possible, consider getting a new router.

Change the router’s administrative password

There are two different passwords associated with your router. There’s your WiFi password that is entered in every device on your home WiFi network, and there’s that administrative password that you use to go into your router to view and change its settings. Modern routers often come with pre-set WiFi passwords.

Update your router’s firmware

If you’re a Windows user, you have dealt with software updates since you first booted the machine. This is much the same. Precisely how you update your router depends on its make and model. If your router has an auto-update feature, you should probably use it.

MAC filtering

This is not about Apple computers. Each wifi device, that connects with your router, no matter what kind of device it is, has a unique MAC address that you normally don’t see but can discover. This allows you to refuse access to all devices other than those whose MAC addresses you explicitly ‘whitelist’ (allow) in your router. If you’re comfortable doing this, consider implementing it.. WARNING: There’s a security vs. convenience trade-off here. You will have to whitelist every new device that you want to appear on your home network.

If your router has a ‘remote management’ setting, turn it off.
