Webinars

We want to continue to provide unique learning opportunities about sustainability. We are pleased to announce that we will host, via Webex, the following webinars (and we are open to topic suggestions) during the remainder of the Spring Semester (dates and time TBA).

What's my ecological footprint?

The Office of Sustainability will guide you through how to measure your Ecological Footprint, determine your personal Earth Overshoot Day, and learn about solutions so we can all tread more lightly on the Earth. This webinar will use the web-based Global Footprint Network's Ecological Footprint Calculator.

Climate Explorer

The Climate Explorer is a web application offering interactive maps and graphs to assist users in making decisions for building resilience to extreme events. Built to support the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, the Climate Explorer helps people explore projected climate conditions that may put people, property, and other assets at risk. This webinar will explore the climate projections for Baltimore.

National Stormwater Calculator

EPA’s National Stormwater Calculator (SWC) is a software application that estimates the annual amount of rainwater and frequency of runoff from a specific site. Estimates are based on local soil conditions, land cover, and historic rainfall records. Users supply information about the site’s land cover and then select the low impact development (LID) controls they would like to use. The LID controls include seven green infrastructure practices. The SWC is designed to be used by anyone interested in reducing runoff from a property, including site developers, landscape architects, urban planners, and homeowners. This webinar will use the SWC web application and consider an area located at UMBC.

HAPP and UMBC Distance Learning

<Tagline>We are ready for online learning!</Tagline>

Hello HAPP majors! I am sure you have gotten word that we will not be returning to campus for the remainder of the semester. This is a big adjustment for everyone, but we are looking forward to seeing you, virtually, next week in our online classrooms. UMBC has been working to transition to all online learning for the remainder of the semester, and your HAPP instructors have been working to move their material to some type of online platform.

Most of your instructors will probably be using Blackboard to deliver content. Make sure you are familiar with Blackboard, and are able to access it regularly to complete your assignments. Most instructors have contacted their classes to let them know what to expect moving forward. If you haven't received a notice from you instructor yet, look at the announcements page in Blackboard for that class. If you still don't see something, please be patient. This is a big change for everyone, and some instructors may still be deciding how to approach their material online.

Advising will be conducted remotely as well. The original timeline is still in place, so make sure you set up a virtual appointment with your advisor if you have not yet done so.

UMBC is still open, even though campus is not widely in use. If you need any kind of UMBC services look for a way to contact that office through email. Some offices on campus will remain accessible, such as University Health Services, The Counseling Center (video chat appointments), and Retriever Essentials. Please do not come to campus though unless you need these few resources, and always make an appointment ahead of time. Most buildings will be locked, and only a few essential employees will be there. Almost all employees will be working from home for the rest of the semester. If you need assistance with anything feel free to contact your advisor or me. We can either help you or send you to someone who can help you.

It is possible that some of you will become ill or will be taking care of family members that are ill. Please let your instructor know as soon as possible if this is the case. You also may have other things, like family or work take your attention. This is to be expected. Again, just let your instructor know. We will be adding back-up instructors to each class. This should help to minimize disruptions if one of us gets ill. We also realize that the internet and Blackboard will cause problems. Don't stress about this, it won't be perfect, but we will all do our best.

If you do not have adequate equipment to participate in online learning, please let us know ASAP! I do think the University is currently trying to address this issue. This could include hardware, like a laptop, or a reliable internet connection. This could also be because the whole family is home sharing limited electronic resources.

Our interns should be in contact with Professor Cozart. We are working to find ways for you to complete your internship remotely, or to complete your hours when restrictions are lifted. Please keep in mind that we do not know when restrictions will be lifted. Summer internships are pending at this point.

Lastly, I expect you have heard that the previously scheduled graduation ceremony will not be happening in May. I don't yet know if the University is making plans for some other type of ceremony. HAPP is so very proud of you and all your accomplishments! We will figure out some way to recognize your graduation. I don't yet know what this will look like, but you will have a unique graduation experience!

Enjoy your last few days of break (with social distance). Let us know if we can help in any way. Wash your hands!

-Katie Birger

HAPP Program Director

COVID-19 HvZ Update

Hi yall, I hope everyone is staying safe and doing well. As you may have seen in the UMBC email, campus has decided to keep classes online for the remainder of the semester. I know there's a lot of events people were looking forward to, and it's a sudden change for everyone to process. Unfortunately, we won't be holding any meetings for the remainder of the semester, including our annual Invitational that was planned for April 25th. Because campus wants to keep in-person presence to a minimum, this also includes unofficial games.

However, we will be continuing with spring elections online! If you have interest in running for a position (President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary, or PR) please reach out to the officer board at umbchvzofficers@gmail.com with your interest! You can run for multiple positions and can hold any simultaneously except for President and Treasurer. Please let us know what you're interested in running for, as well as a short description of why. We'll be having our Q&A online, and are aiming to begin our voting period April 12th, with the officer board officially changing on May 1st.

From all of the officers, we're really sorry that we won't have a chance to meet again this semester. Please use this time to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy, and we can't wait to play again in the future!

USM schools to transition to distance-learning for rest of semester

University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman delivered a statement on March 19 detailing that all undergraduate, face-to-face instruction will be conducted using distance-learning for the rest of the academic year.

According to Perman, those students who do not have access to reliable internet service or laptops will be provided with the necessary equipment and will receive free internet service through carriers from their university.

Individual universities have been collaborating for “weeks now,” according to Perman, in order to share resources about “technology plans and platforms for things like final exams, clinical simulations and lab demonstration.”

While undergraduate students will be spending the rest of their semesters online, graduate students and students in professional programs are subject to different academic “considerations,” which includes seeking “guidance from the relevant accrediting bodies and boards that provide certification” before finalizing instructional changes, Perman said.

The USM is recommending that reimbursement for students’ room and board costs will occur on a prorated basis, Perman said, and stated that financial aid packages will not be impacted, under “good guidance from the federal government.”

“Distance learning has still more implications to housing, specifically the fair adjustment of cost, including room and board,” Perman said.

Each university is formulating a schedule for student move out procedures. “Obviously, this needs to be done in an orderly fashion — with special attention given to the fact that we cannot have people gathering in large crowds, and that we need to be able to maintain social distancing,” Perman said.

In an email communication from UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous, they stated that “students who have left campus for spring break will continue to be unable to access their residence halls. Students with an urgent need to retrieve items from their residence halls prior to this announcement may contact Residential Life.”

Residential Life staff will be disinfecting high-touch areas and trying to alleviate crowding in “pinch points,” or small spaces where large groups could gather.

All USM schools have also been instructed not to hold traditional, in-person commencements and are encouraged to “be creative with how they celebrate their graduates,” Perman said.

Perman issued a word of warning to students who may not be social distancing. “This isn’t a break. It’s not a respite from the semester. It’s not a party. I urge students staying in their family homes or in off-campus housing to follow the state and federal guidelines on gatherings,” Perman said.

As of March 19, 38 percent of patients hospitalized were between 20 and 54.

Earlier in the meeting, Board of Regent members voted unanimously to temporarily delegate authority to Perman to amend board policy as needed to respond to COVID-19. This temporary authority was granted for up to 1 year, with a fiscal spending limit of 10 million dollars.

Treasurer of the Board of Regents William Wood cited Perman as being uniquely qualified, after his time as a doctor and the president of the healthcare campus at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. “He’s the perfect person for this responsibility,” Wood said.

These decisions come just hours after Governor Larry Hogan asked the USM Board of Regents to keep students off campus and move the remainder of the semester online. Perman noted that Governor Hogan’s press conference was in alignment with the decision that the Board of Regents was moving towards.

As of March 17, two UMBC community members were being tested for COVID-19. UMBC has not released results and does not plan to unless the tests are positive.

Extraordinary Times and Extraordinary Community

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

Many are calling this period a defining moment for humankind, and history will judge us by how we respond. As the COVID-19 crisis continues to unfold, we want you to know how proud we are of the ways that our community of inquiring minds has already been adapting. Thank you for all that you are doing to support one another, your families, and fellow citizens during these challenging times.

Campus leaders are meeting daily to navigate this rapidly changing reality, and we are working closely with USM Chancellor Jay Perman, other System campuses, and shared governance groups to plan necessary transitions in teaching, learning, research, and the daily life of our campus community.

We have had difficult decisions to make, and we have made them with the understanding that the health and safety of our community must be our top priority. In partnership with the University System of Maryland, we have determined that this means extending distance learning for the remainder of the spring semester. During this time, UMBC will remain open for student support services and business operations. In accordance with guidance provided by the Governor, employees will continue to work remotely whenever possible.

To our undergraduate and graduate students: We know you have been concerned with what happens next, and we are all feeling for you and with you. There is so much you hoped to do this semester, and it is such a disappointment to have these plans interrupted. Online instruction begins on Monday, March 23, and will continue throughout the semester. Faculty have been working with the Division of Information Technology and each other to ensure the highest quality of instruction.

To the Class of 2020, in particular, please know we recognize how hard you have worked to achieve your goals. We are very sorry that we will not be holding in-person Commencement ceremonies this spring. We know how difficult this is for you, your families, and your friends. Just know this is not the end. We may not be having the in-person ceremony, but we will find ways of recognizing you and celebrating your achievements.

A special thank you to our faculty and staff who have been doing everything they can to provide emotional, academic, and other types of support to our students.

Over the coming weeks, patience and understanding will be essential as all of us adjust to these changes. We know that many students, faculty, and staff have questions, and we are committed to providing information and support. Pressing concerns we have heard include the following.

We know that the shift to distance learning may have financial implications for students and families. We are working closely with USM to establish a system for refunds. We will announce more details in the days to come. Students with immediate resource concerns are encouraged to contact covid19@umbc.edu.

Students who normally live on campus will soon receive information about the process for safely retrieving their belongings. Until this is established, students who have left campus for spring break will continue to be unable to access their residence halls. Students with an urgent need to retrieve items from their residence halls prior to this announcement may contact Residential Life.

We appreciate your patience and partnership as we move forward together in this new reality. Most important, we hope all of you and your families remain safe and healthy.

We will continue to communicate regularly, and we encourage you to visit UMBC’s COVID-19 website at covid19.umbc.edu for prevention steps, updates, and resources. Urgent questions can be sent to covid19@umbc.edu.

We leave you with these words from Jeanne Rikkers.

May we who are merely inconvenienced,

Remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors,

Remember the most vulnerable.

May we who have the luxury of working from home,

Remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.

May we who have flexibility to care for our children when their schools close,

Remember those who have no options.

May we who have to cancel our trips,

Remember those that have no safe place to go.

May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market,

Remember those who have no margin at all.

May we who settle in for a quarantine at home,

Remember those who have no home.

As fear grips our country,

Let us choose LOVE.

She concludes by noting that this is a time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, and yet we certainly can find ways of providing a ”loving embrace” to our neighbors.
