Closing this week: The Museum of the Old Colony

<Tagline>Don't miss out on this historic exhibit!</Tagline>

This is the last week to catch The Museum of the Old Colony at @cadvc_umbc -- closes March 14!

Using appropriated imagery, film clips, and objects, this historic installation by Pablo Delano ironically bears witness to the colonial oppression imposed by the U.S. institutional and cultural fabric on virtually all aspects of Puerto Rican life since the 1898 occupation.

With sardonic humor, The Museum of the Old Colony references traditional anthropological museums and their use of ethnographic imagery and didactic texts.

Stop by the CADVC in the Fine Arts building today!

Hello all,

I'm happy to announce that our panels for the Spring 2020 semester are coming up soon! We hold these panels to help educate our community about LGBTQ communities, issues, and culture. We have two panels scheduled this semester for anyone who wishes to come out to them!

Our Trans101 Panel is on Tuesday, March 24th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in the SportsZone. We will discuss what it means to be transgender and nonbinary and the specific challenges they face, and what can be done to better support these individuals.

Our LGBTQ101 Panel is on Tuesday, April 7th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in the SportsZone. We will discuss the basics of the LGBTQ community: what it is, culture and problems surrounding it, and what it's like to be LGBTQ.

These panels aren't possible without your help! Anyone who is interested in helping volunteer for the panel: for setup: cleanup; reviewing questions; moderating; or being a panelist, are encouraged to fill out this Google Form, preferably by March 20th. We will email everyone before the panel and we ask that volunteers please show up early to help everything run smoothly. In the event that campus is closed for a panel, we will not hold that event this semester. If you have any questions, feel free to email Joey Odenwald at josepho1@umbc.edu.

Community Travel Precautions for Spring Break

Dear UMBC Community Members,

As UMBC continues to respond to the worldwide impact of COVID-19 and the campus prepares for spring break, we are receiving a number of inquiries about travel and want to provide you with resources to help you be safe and healthy. For additional information on UMBC’s response to COVID-19, please visit our website. Currently there are no suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 at UMBC.

Before traveling for spring break, please be sure you are aware of the risks of travel during this time. Please note that UMBC is prohibiting university-related travel to any country that is under a CDC Risk Assessment Level 1, 2, or 3 related to COVID-19. We also strongly advise against any international travel, independent of CDC levels. Non-essential national travel is also not advised.

If you choose to travel, know that even a country not currently experiencing an outbreak could be declared a high-risk area, resulting in heightened exposure to the virus, difficulty with departure, immigration barriers in returning to the U.S., and possible quarantine or self-isolation upon arriving in the U.S. If you are traveling in the U.S., be aware of how the area you are traveling to may be impacted and plan accordingly.

Finally, no matter where you will be during spring break, remember to keep basic health measures in mind to prevent the spread of any virus. This includes minimizing personal contact, including shaking hands.

If you are feeling unwell, please stay home and rest. Community members with underlying health conditions, who take medicines that suppress their immune system, who are 65 or older, or who have other risk factors, should consult with their health provider immediately if they have cold or flu symptoms. If you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, call your personal health provider.
