ME Research Lab Tour -- Dr. Romero-Talamas

On Nov. 1, 2019, more than 40 ME undergraduate students gathered outside the research lab of Dr. Carlos Romero-Talamas, an Associate Professor of the ME department. Dr. Romero gave a 20 minutes powerpoint presentation on the ongoing research projects in his lab. He then led the tour of the lab and described major equipment. During the tour, students asked many questions and inquired possible research opportunity in Dr. Romero's lab. Based on the surveys given after the tour, 100% of the students are satisfied with the tour and they are interested in future tours of other research labs in the department. The ME S-STEM Scholarship Program sponsored this event and we are grateful to Dr. Romero for his time and help.

Presenting Engineering Research Results at BMES Conference

On behalf of the entire management team of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program, Dr. Zhu presented a paper entitled "Current Perceptions and Attitudes of Research and Engineering of Mechanical Engineering (ME) S-STEM Scholars And Regular ME Students", at the Annual Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society in Philadelphia, PA, in Oct. 2019. In recently years, one sees more and more engineering education papers presented in the traditional research oriented BMES annual meeting. Our paper was well received by the attendees in the meeting. It was great to interact with other researchers working in engineering education.

Extracting Blood Flow Information - Hector Flores' Research

ME S-STEM Scholar Hector Flores worked in the summer in the Bioheat Transfer Laboratory at UMBC to gain research experience. His research project was to determine baseline blood perfusion rate in tumors from measured infrared temperature distribution. This was the first time Mr. Flores worked in a research lab at UMBC. He has learned how an infrared camera interprets irradiation received into temperature mapping of a surface. Mr. Flores studied how a commercial software COMSOL works to simulate temperature fields in an image-scan generated mouse body and an embedded tumor. The extracted local blood perfusion rate is useful to improve accuracy of theoretical simulations in tissue to design safe and effective heating protocols for damaging tumors.
