Dear UMBC Faculty and Staff,

We are pleased to announce the formal launch of the Instructional Space and Scheduling Improvements Initiative (ISSI). Consistent with recommendations in UMBC’s Strategic Plan, the purpose of this initiative is to develop recommendations to significantly improve the availability and utility of instructional spaces at UMBC. This initiative follows from the Instructional Space and Scheduling Review Study that was conducted by Educational Consulting Services Corp. (ECS) and resulted in two reports: the Utilization Report and the Key Issues and Planning Directions Report. Based on the content of these reports, three informational sessions were conducted for the UMBC community in April and May 2019.

In order to develop a set of recommendations, we’ve established an ISSI steering committee, task force, and five working teams representing a broad range of campus stakeholders. Detailed information on the charges for each of the working teams, their membership, and the project timeline can be found here. We will continue to inform the campus of progress made and will seek input from community members as the project unfolds. In the meantime, we welcome your suggestions and feedback. Please direct all inquiries and comments to Tony Moreira and Sarah Shin.

We are grateful to Tony Moreira and Sarah Shin for their leadership as co-chairs of the Instructional Space and Scheduling Improvements Task Force and to all members of the task force and the five working teams for their dedication and commitment to this important endeavor.

Webinar - The Sandwich Generation

<Tagline>Meeting the Challenges of Multigenerational Caregiving</Tagline>

This session provides a timely overview of how to cope as a member of the "sandwich generation." Participants will identify common family dynamics, from elders who feel anger and shame at losing their independence and role in society, to children who are confused, frustrated and embarrassed by a grandparent's decline. As stress increases, they will learn how to identify the triggers that indicate that they may need more help and external services. The session concludes with coping strategies for the caregivers, most often women, who face the competing pressures of family life and work while they care for an elderly relative.
