Letter to the Editor: Sam Saper on the unveiling of UMBC’s new logo

I am writing in response to Maxi Wardcantori’s article about the school’s new logo, and also in response to the letter to the editor published recently which remarked on that article. I believe that Wardcantori’s argument is exactly correct: The logo includes confederate symbology, which is completely inappropriate. The letter to the editor attempts to argue that the red-and-white cross design is not a confederate symbol, yet admits that “use of the cross bottony design by Confederate soldiers cannot be denied,” and that it was adopted as a “symbol of postwar reconciliation.” Does the author of this letter have any conception of what “postwar reconciliation” entailed, in 1904? As recounted in many histories, most recently Henry Louis Gates’ “Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow,” around 1865 the civil war initially seemed likely to end with full citizenship for Black Americans. However, white state governments in the south embarked on a plan to revoke that citizenship in piecemeal fashion, and in 1877 the federal government pulled its troops from the South. Jim Crow laws, permanently embedded by the Plessy v. Ferguson supreme court decision, disenfranchised Black citizens. What came next was a massive campaign to defend white supremacy and reshape the popular conception of the war as “about” states’ rights, instead of slavery; a viewpoint that was widely accepted, across political lines, until quite recently. This campaign of white-supremacist viewpoints disguised as “reconciliation” is what the cross bottony symbolizes: A reconciliation between white northerners and white southerners, united by their prejudice. To showcase this pattern on a state flag may be excused as historical, but to embed it in a newly-created logo is distasteful in the extreme.

In addition, UMBC’s address is 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, Maryland. While we are located outside the beltway, our address is in Baltimore, Maryland. This is what “technically” means.

Letter to the Editor: Catherine Sansone on the unveiling of UMBC’s new logo

The unveiling of UMBC’s new logo, and Ms. Wardcantori’s article couldn’t be timelier. I am currently enrolled in Myth, Memory, and the American Civil War, History 496, with Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin, and writing my History capstone on the Maryland State Flag. The article referenced the Calvert crest doubling, during colonial times, as the “unofficial Maryland Flag”, which is incorrect, we had no flag but a State Seal. The newly formed United States of America had shed its English roots and a decidedly Republican image was created. In 1852, Governor E. Lewis Lowe restored the Seal but sadly misinterpreted the original design. Black was substituted for the Crossland red, and the gold/black paly of six was rendered as five. It was not until 1872, in the Old Treasury Building in Annapolis, that the Seal used by Cecil Calvert was discovered. Confederate soldiers did adopt the cross bottony symbol but were unaware of the original color. Early in the Civil War, Baltimore was under martial law and the wearing of ‘secession colors’ (red and white) was forbidden but not the cross bottony design itself. In 1880, the ‘flag’ was carried in the Baltimore Sesquicentennial Parade by the 5th Regiment, comprised of both Union and Confederate soldiers, and again in 1888 during the Maryland Union Monument dedication ceremony in Gettysburg.

While use of the cross bottony design by Confederate soldiers cannot be denied, the State Flag was adopted in 1904 as a symbol of postwar reconciliation, rather than in defiance of Federal authority or in response to the 20th century civil rights movement. And “technically” Ms. Wardcantori, the University is not located in the City of Baltimore but outside the beltway.

Supporting Students, Staff, and Faculty During Ramadan

<Tagline>Ramadan this year starts on May 5th!</Tagline>

Ramadan is a month dedicated to fasting, spirituality & worship, and charity & community. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year and follows the lunar calendar. During this month, no food or drink (including water) may be taken from dawn to dusk Worshippers eat a pre dawn light meal, called suhoor. After dusk, Muslims break the fast with an evening meal called iftar.

For the first time in 10 years, Ramadan will run from approximately May 5th - June 4th causing it to fall within the academic school year. This will impact Muslim students, staff, and faculty in various ways. In addition to being aware of this religious observance, here are five ways you can support members of the Muslim community this month.

Understand that Ramadan is a time of spiritual cleansing and reflection.

Acknowledge Ramadan and Eid by wishing folks well.

Be respectful of prayer times - many people are more observant during Ramadan and therefore may need to leave class, meetings, or other obligations to pray for approximately ten minutes.

Ramadan includes evening programs that will require folks to be out late - check on your friends to make sure they get home safely!

Check on your friends mental health and overall well-being.

For more information on how to support the Muslim community this Ramadan, check out the attached handout from the Islamic Center at New York University and head over to the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Towson, MD!

For questions about religious and spiritual resources, please contact Erin Waddles, Coordinator for Student Diversity and Inclusion at waddles@umbc.edu and Idania Ramos at idramos1@umbc.edu.

Summer Course: Creating the Constitution (HIST 423)

<Tagline>HIST 423 is an ONLINE Class - Summer Session I</Tagline>

Description

"The United States Constitution is the oldest and the shortest written constitution in the world. Its 4,400 words have played a crucial role in limiting government and creating freedom for over 200 years." - Trent Lorcher.

The US Constitution established a stronger federal government with three branches and a system of checks and balances to ensure no single branch would have too much power. Then, in 1791, the Bill of Rights became part of the Constitution - 10 amendments guaranteeing basic individual protections, such as freedom of speech and religion.

This summer, explore the creation of the federal Constitution of 1787 and the Bill of Rights in HIST 423.

This course sheds light on many of the contemporary issues and debates we have about the powers of government and the problems of democracy. It turns out the most of the things people complain about regarding the Constitution that they see standing in the way of a democracy that represents "the people" over moneyed interests are not bugs in the system, but features designed by the founders to be "barriers against democracy." So, when people complain about the lack of democracy in things like the electoral college, the senate, unaccountable executive power, and gerrymandered election districts, they are complaining about things that are generally working as the founders intended - to give the "wealthy and well born" structural advantages over "the people."
