Navid Goudarzi, Ph.D. ’14, mechanical engineering, remembers UMBC for its diversity and supportive academic environment, as well as its strong connection to the broader University of Maryland system, which enabled interdisciplinary engagement across campuses. Now an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the Washkewicz College of Engineering at Cleveland State University, Goudzari was recently honored with a prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award. The CAREER Award recognizes early-career faculty who demonstrate exceptional potential to integrate research, education, and broader societal impact.

During his time in Maryland, Goudzari worked with UMBC professor of mechanical engineering Weidong Zhu and University of Maryland, College Park mechanical engineering professor Peter Sandborn.

Goudarzi currently leads the Multiscale Multiphysics Modeling and Data-Driven Analysis of Thermofluids (M3TFluiD) Lab and serves as co-director of the Center for Integrated Modeling for Energy, Resiliency, and Sustainability (IERS) at Cleveland State University. His research focuses on complex flow behavior in engineered and environmental systems, with applications to energy systems, next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles, high-performance buildings, resilient infrastructure, and more.

Read more about his NSF CAREER Award-supported research in this Washkewicz Magazine article (2025-2026 edition, pages 8-11).

What I remember most about my time at UMBC is the diverse and supportive environment created by the broader University of Maryland system. Being part of a community that brings together individuals from a wide range of technical, cultural, and personal backgrounds broadened my perspectives and helped shape my approach to research, teaching, and mentorship. The academic setting encouraged exploration and interdisciplinary thinking, and I appreciated the flexibility and institutional encouragement that allowed me to pursue new research directions during my doctoral studies. This freedom to grow as an independent researcher played a significant role in laying the foundation for my career. – Dr. Navid Goudzari

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to share that Dr. Jennifer Harrison, Associate Director for Assessment in the Faculty Development Center (FDC), is retiring at the end of January 2026. In her 11 years with the UMBC FDC, Jennifer has consulted with numerous faculty and programs to develop effective assessment practices, supported the institution's Middle States accreditation efforts, led programs around all aspects of assessment and faculty development, and developed and published curriculum mapping templates. She created dynamic, kinesthetic curriculum mapping workshops that empowered faculty to connect student-centered teaching, learning, and assessment practices in their programs and courses to constructively transform students’ learning experiences. She has presented for a range of higher education audiences, consulted on student-centered curriculum development at other universities, and co-authored a book, A Guide to Curriculum Mapping: Creating a Collaborative, Transformative, and Learner-Centered Curriculum (Routledge, 2024) with Dr. Vickie Williams. Jennifer has taught courses at UMBC in the College Teaching & Learning Science certificate program, the First Year Seminar program, and the English department.

We are thankful for Jennifer's contributions to UMBC and the FDC and hope you will join us in wishing her well in retirement!

Ana Oskoz

Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs

Communities intentionally created for people to interact with each other can foster a strong sense of belonging and wellbeing. Join us to hear from Charles Durrett, principal architect at The Cohousing Company, is a leading voice in creating communities where people truly connect. After studying Denmark's bofællesskaber model, he coined the term "cohousing" in 1985 and brought it to North America with the book Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves, now in its third edition titled Creating Cohousing: Building Sustainable Communities. Now on his 16th book, Neuro-Inclusive Community Design, he has designed over 55 cohousing communities for seniors, families, and neurodiverse individuals. By starting with culture before construction, Charles has spent four decades helping people create places that foster belonging and sustainability. His work has been featured in Time, The New York Times, and The Guardian, and he's spoken everywhere from the U.S. Congress to Stanford and the Royal Danish Academy. Whether designing a village or speaking to a crowd, Charles is driven by one belief: housing should bring people together.

As
you prepare to return to UMBC, and start in-person classes on
Wednesday, January 28th, we encourage you, when feasible, to communicate
directly with your faculty if you anticipate needing flexibility. The
earlier you are able to share your circumstances, the better. If you are
unable to communicate in advance, following up with your faculty as
soon as you are able to do so is also advisable.

If
you do not hear back from a faculty member, or if you experience
additional challenges, please reach out to your academic department for
guidance. Academic advisors in each college are also an available
resource if you are unsure who to contact regarding your specific
    situation.
