Hi everyone! Welcome to the KDC myUMBC page!

UMBC K-pop Dance Club is a performance/interest group for students interested in K-pop and K-pop Dance! We are a diverse group of students that are dedicated to creating a welcoming environment whether you're a dancer or someone who is simply interested in K-pop idols and music! We aim to create a space where dancers, new or experienced, can come together in a space where anyone interested in K-pop/dancing can learn choreography and have the opportunity to perform at on and off campus events throughout the year, in addition to events in-person and virtual where students can meet each other and bond over similar interests!

We host GBM (general board meetings!) where we come together as a club and play online games, deco + scrapbook or even do Random Dance Plays! We also teach dance workshops taught by our club leadership and other club members!

To learn more about our club, please go to the "Files" tab and click into the Contact Us folder. There are links to our social media as well as videos of past performances. Feel free to check them out and leave a like/follow!

Make sure to join our myUMBC group and turn notifications on to be updated on all of our events and activities through your UMBC email!

Two talks on Security Challenges for Immersive Technologies

<Tagline>7-8:30am EDT, Thursday October 9, 2025</Tagline>

The International Cyber Security Center of Excellence (INCS-CoE), of which UMBC is a charter member, will hold an online seminar on Security Challenges for Immersive Technologies from 7:00 to 8:30 am EDT on Thursday, October 9 via Zoom. The seminar will consist of two talks.

Enhancing Security and Privacy in Augmented Reality - Through the Lens of Eye Tracking, Bo Ji, Virginia Tech

Augmented Reality (AR) devices distinguish themselves from other mobile devices by providing an immersive and interactive experience. The ability of these devices to collect information presents challenges and opportunities to improve existing security and privacy techniques in this domain. In this talk, I will discuss how readily available eye-tracking sensor data can be used to improve existing methods for assuring security and protecting the privacy of those near the device. Our research has presented three new systems, BystandAR, ShouldAR, and GazePair, leveraging the user's eye gaze to improve security and privacy expectations in or with AR. As these devices grow in power and number, such solutions are necessary to prevent perception and privacy failures that hindered earlier devices. This work is presented in the hope that these solutions can improve and expedite the adoption of these powerful and useful AR devices.

Shaping the Metaverse: Policy engagement with immersive technologies in the UK, Jesus Martinez del Rincon, Queen's University Belfast

Queen's University Belfast completed a two-phase Metaverse technologies horizon scanning project in July 2023 and 2025. This talk will cover a summary of the most relevant findings and outcomes. In the first phase, we presented a broad landscaping report of UK interests and activities in related technical areas. Building on areas where the UK might benefit from the emerging Metaverse, the second phase, deepens the analysis in three main areas: a) interoperability standards: where we highlighted current metaverse standards development organisations and identified the strategic aims of such participation; b) privacy, security and regulations: investigating two complementary aspects: (1) the evolving regulatory and legal landscape related to data collection by metaverse service operators; (2) a thread analysis of the metaverse and a technical analysis of the privacy preserving technologies that could enable metaverse data platforms; c) a horizon-scanning of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and their application to the Metaverse.

Join the seminar via Zoom.

Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a vibrant harvest celebration and holiday observed across a number of Asian countries and communities worldwide. It traditionally falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest.

The official start of the celebrations for 2025 is Monday, October 6th. Some countries and cultures celebrate across multiple days.

A Celebration of Harvest and Family

Predominately observed in countries like China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, the festival is a time for gratitude, reunion, and observing the bountiful autumn harvest.

While the central theme of gathering with family and loved ones is universal, each culture brings its own unique traditions, whether it's a specific emphasis on the full moon, honoring ancestors, or celebrating children.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is known by several beautiful names, reflecting the cultural diversity of its observance:

China (Mandarin/Cantonese) | 中秋节 (Zhōngqiū Jié) / 中秋節 (Jūng-chāu Jit) (Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival, Mooncake Festival)

Vietnam | Tết Trung Thu (Also known as the Children's Festival)

Korea | 추석 (Chuseok) / 한가위 (Hangawi) (Often referred to as "Korean Thanksgiving")

Japan | 月見 (Tsukimi) (Moon Viewing)

Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan | Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival

Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia | Lantern Festival (Note: This is distinct from the Lantern Festival that takes place in the first month of the Lunar calendar)

Festive Foods

Food is a significant element of the Mid-Autumn Festival, with specific treats that symbolize reunion and completeness:

Mooncakes are the most iconic food, widely eaten and gifted, in many communities that celebrate the "Mooncake Festival". These dense, round pastries traditionally feature rich fillings like lotus seed paste or red bean paste, often with salted duck egg yolks to represent the full moon. Modern variations include everything from ice cream to chocolate fillings.

In Vietnamese households, you may enjoy two main types of mooncakes: Bánh Dẻo, which is a sticky-soft, mochi-like pastry, and Bánh Nướng, the more common baked mooncake. Tết Trung Thu also features green rice flakes (Cốm) wrapped in lotus leaves and a colorful Five-Fruit Tray offered to ancestors.

In Korea during Chuseok, families prepare Songpyeon, small, crescent-shaped rice cakes steamed over pine needles. These are often filled with ingredients like toasted sesame seeds, chestnuts, or red bean paste. The crescent shape symbolizes future prosperity.

From all of us, we wish you a joyous and memorable Mid-Autumn Festival!

From Angelina's own culture and language, 추석 잘 보내세요! ("Have a good Chuseok!")

The Semiotics of Skin: The Discursive Construction of Desirable Figures of Personhood in Korean Beauty's Global Circulation

Dr. Joyhanna Jung Yoo will discuss how Korean American
entrepreneurs in the global K-beauty industry establish their expertise
by sharing personal memories of Korean skincare traditions, positioning
these practices as age-old beauty philosophies rather than mere trends.
Through discourse analysis that focuses on the sensory and gendered
aspects of these shared memories, the study reveals how K-beauty
discourse creates aspirational identities for consumers while
transforming traditional Korean skincare rituals into marketable
    expertise that circulates globally.

Joyhanna "Joy" Yoo (she/they) is a linguistic
anthropologist whose work examines the circulation of Korean popular
cultural genres with fieldwork based in Seoul, Mexico City, and Los
Angeles. Their research examines the meanings generated by language as
it pertains to race and gender when cultural genres circulate. Joy has
also published on Asian American racialization and linguistic
appropriation in mediatized contexts. Her newer work examines the
relationship between language loss, grief, and Korean diasporic
belonging. They are especially passionate about student-centered
    teaching, mentorship, and student advocacy.
