Hey all, I'm a rising junior looking into off-campus housing for Fall 2019. Max budget is around $300-$350 utilities included. Open to sharing a studio or 1 bedroom if it makes a difference, but I would like someone who's open to apartment hunt for a 2-br space. Looking to move in before the start of the fall semester.

Female juniors and seniors preferred. Bonus if you know 1 or 2 other people that don't mind a 3 or 4-br space (that would cost less per person).

Not-Quite Throwback Thursday: Geauga Lake

Hi everyone! My apologies if it may be a bit too late for a “Throwback Thursday” article (or even a “Flashback Friday” one). But this week’s subject is a certain place on a lake in Ohio...no, not that one in Sandusky, but the other one that used to exist to the east - Geauga Lake!

Throughout the 1800s, Geauga Lake would progressively become known for being a popular destination for picnics. The park would officially be established as a pleasure park in 1887. Though the first ride - a steam powered carousel- would be added a couple years later in 1889, the park’s identity as a true amusement park would especially confirmed by the addition of the Sky Rocket roller coaster in 1925. Later known as the Clipper, and more famously as the Big Dipper, this coaster was designed by the legendary John A Miller, and was one of the largest in the world at the time it was built.

Geauga Lake continued to evolve over the following decades. Growth would especially pick up after the park was purchased by Funtime Inc in 1969. One of their first major moves was persuading SeaWorld to open their second park on the opposite side of the lake the following year, beginning a friendly relationship with both parks that would continue for the next 30 years. During the 1970s, Geauga Lake would see improvements, ranging from a switch from a “pay-as-you-go” to a “pay-one-price” admission format, to Geauga Dog and his friends becoming mascot ambassadors. Of course, these would be alongside the addition of more rides and attractions. These included the addition of both the Double Loop and Corkscrew roller coasters in 1977 and 1978 respectively, making the park the first in Ohio to feature two coasters with upside-down inversions. The 80s would see further additions such as the Boardwalk Shores water park area, and Raging Wolf Bobs to celebrate the park's centennial in 1988. But despite outgrowing its humble beginnings, the park still managed to maintain a local charm it had with guests alike.

In 1993, Funtime would be purchased by Premier Parks Inc. The first few years of their ownership of Geauga Lake would see the park receive additions such as Texas Twister, the first HUSS Top Spin ride in North America, Mind Eraser, a Vekoma Boomerang coaster, and Serial Thriller, a Vekoma Suspended Looping Coaster. However, bigger changes would come, as somewhat signaled by Premier’s purchase of the Six Flags Theme Park chain from Time Warner in 1998.

In the year 2000, the park rung in the new millennium with a transformation into Six Flags Ohio, seeing $40 million worth of new rides - including four new coasters - along with other improvements, such as the incorporation of DC Comics and Looney Tunes characters into the park. The following year, in addition to adding yet another new coaster, Six Flags would also purchase the SeaWorld park across the lake for $110 million, and quickly restocked the park with animals from some of their other parks. The newly formed “megapark” would be further rebranded to Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, and what was once a small, local park had become the world’s largest theme park - at more than 500 acres - almost overnight!

However, in the midst of financially troubling times for the company, Six Flags would sell the park to Cedar Fair - owners and operators of Cedar Point, one of the Geauga Lake's closest competitors - prior to the 2004 season for $145 million. In addition to reinstating the park's original name, all Six Flags related themes were removed. The Wild Life side of the park was also closed off, with the animals being moved to other Six Flags parks. However, 2005 would see the opening of Wildwater Kingdom, a new waterpark on the former animal side. Despite this, the park would continue to see its attendance fall, and numerous cutbacks would occur over the next couple seasons. In addition to their annual Halloween event being canceled in 2006, the park would also remove pre-Memorial Day weekends from their operating calendar the next year. Several coasters and other rides were closed without replacement as well, such as X Flight and Steel Venom. These and more could have acted as a sign of what would happen next…

About a week after the park finished its 2007 operating season as scheduled, Cedar Fair announced that the dry ride side of the park would remain closed permanently. Some of the parks rides would find new life at some of the company’s other parks, such as the Dominator floorless coaster going to Kings Dominion for the 2008 season. Others would fare a worse fate, such as the Big Dipper. Despite sitting idle for nearly a decade after the park closed, all attempts to save the historic ride fell through, and the coaster was demolished in the fall of 2016. Meanwhile, Wildwater Kingdom would continue operating as a stand-alone attraction through its 2016 season, ending a tradition spanning more than 100 years of the site being home to some kind of entertainment attraction.

The cause of Geauga Lake’s downfall can be a source of debate. Some blame it on Six Flags over-expanding the park in a short amount of time, while others blame Cedar Fair for a lack of investment in the park. However, one thing is certain - the memories made by the guests who visited any of the parks that called this site home will continue to live on.

UMBC’s Tyson King-Meadows becomes an ACE Fellow, as an emerging national higher ed leader

The American Council on Education (ACE) announced this week that UMBC’s Tyson King-Meadows, associate dean for research and college affairs in the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS), has been selected as a 2019-2020 ACE Fellow. King-Meadows will join a cohort of thirty-nine fellows from institutions across the United States in the distinguished education leadership program.

Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education. The program identifies and prepares faculty and staff for senior positions in college and university administration through its distinctive and intensive nominator-driven, cohort-based mentorship model.

“I am excited and grateful for this opportunity to further deepen my leadership skills and goals,” says King-Meadows, thanking his nominator, President Freeman Hrabowski, whom he has worked with on leadership and diversity initiatives that support UMBC’s vision and values.

Inspired leadership

The fellowship affords King-Meadows the opportunity to shadow a president or provost to prepare him for the complexities of leading an institution of higher education. Over the course of a year, each cohort member will be able to observe and learn from top leaders in higher education as they manage crises, connect with donors, understand curriculum in different fields, and engage with stakeholders across their university communities.

The fellowship will also provide King-Meadows insight into areas of personal interest, like faculty development, strategic planning, external partnerships, and research infrastructure.

“There is a direct correlation between how people think about their scholarship and how people think about their teaching,” explains King-Meadows. “It is an interactive, reciprocal relationship. If you have the best research infrastructure you will have the best teachers and the best students.”

King-Meadows feels UMBC strengthens the relationship between research and teaching through engaged scholarship and applied learning opportunities through the Shriver Center and Career Center. He also wants to further bolster that connection by learning from the approaches of other institutions.

Immersed in UMBC

During his sixteen years at UMBC, King-Meadows has served in several key leadership roles within CAHSS and across the university. He has led as co-chair of the Provost’s Executive Committee for the Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement of Underrepresented Minority Faculty and chair of the department of Africana studies. He is also an affiliate faculty member in the School of Public Policy, the department of Africana studies, and the language, literacy, and culture doctoral program.

“Tyson King-Meadows has long been a visionary leader at UMBC at every level, from department to College to University,” shares Scott Casper, dean of CAHSS. “I’m delighted that ACE has recognized his record of accomplishments, and I look forward to the exciting ideas and approaches he will bring back to us from institutions across the country.”

Tyson King-Meadows speaks at a welcome reception for the 2015-2017 cohort of Postdoctoral Fellows for Faculty Diversity.

In addition to being recognized for his support of faculty and students in the social sciences and the humanities, King-Meadows is also an esteemed scholar. His scholarship has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Congressional Fellowship Program of the American Political Science Association, Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, and U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program.

Higher education leaders of tomorrow

Over the last fifty years, more than 2,000 higher education leaders have participated in the ACE Fellows Program. Eighty percent of ACE Fellows have gone on to serve as senior leaders of colleges and universities.

Along with highly acclaimed faculty from other institutions, King-Meadows joins a respected group of UMBC scholars who have participated in the ACE Fellows Program. UMBC’s ACE alumni include Sarah J. Shin, associate provost for academic affairs; Marie desJardins, former professor of computer science and associate dean for academic affairs, who is now a dean at Simmons College; Julie Ross, former dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology, who is now a dean at Virginia Tech; and Anne Brodsky, associate dean of CAHSS, and chair and professor of psychology.

Like faculty before him, King-Meadows plans to use the strategies and techniques he learns as an ACE Fellow to further support the implementation of UMBC’s strategic plan and advance UMBC’s vision to connect innovative teaching and learning, research across disciplines, and civic engagement.
