Opportunity for Visual Arts students at Bitcamp Hackathon

<Tagline>Bitcamp Hackathon</Tagline>

Want to
apply your design skills in a creative and fun environment, while also
getting professional design feedback and mingling with recruiters?
Bitcamp, an annual 36-hour hackathon held at the University of Maryland
College Park with over 1200 participants each year, is taking place this
year from April 12-14th in the Xfinity Center! We're the largest spring
hackathon on the east coast and are sponsored by a range of companies,
so there is free food, swag, and plenty of opportunities to network with
companies. For the second year in a row, we are opening up a program
specifically for students with a passion for Visual Design, User
    Experience and/or Product Design!

Design
Den is a design-tailored program where students can apply their design
skills learned in class to the tech space in a fun, creative
environment. Throughout the course of the hackathon, Design students
build up a portfolio(Bitfolio) and at the end have it judged by design
professionals and win substantial prizes! Designers can partake as
mentors to bring a creative perspective and guide hackers on how to
improve the design/UI/UX of their hacks, or they can partake as hackers
themselves and contribute to their team through designing the UI/UX.
Participants can also mingle with recruiters that are looking
specifically for students with a design-focused perspective and
experience! Professional development opportunities such as portfolio
review and workshops will also be available throughout the weekend.

More information about the program can be found in our medium article: https://medium.com/@bitcmp/design-den-907a6f40c3a9

To apply:

1. First, complete the general Bitcamp application at bit.camp. Priority deadline is 3/15

2. Submit your portfolio through the Design Den application at https://bitcamp.typeform.com/to/tYvXRT

3. Mark your calendars for April 12-14th! We will be running a free bus to/from UMBC that weekend!

As
this is a relatively new program, we will be limiting the number of
total participants. However, we take in applicants of all skill levels
so don't let that stop you from applying! We look forward to seeing you
    this year at Bitcamp 2019!

SGA Finance Board Runs Out of Cash

Last Friday the SGA informed student organizations that they had, in fact, completely run out of money. This means that any requests for money made to the Finance Board that had not already been approved could no longer be approved, making countless end of the year parties and group events impossible.

Anticipating pushback, the SGA made sure to clarify where that money had gone. This included a coffee shop in Arbutus that will not be opening, stationary for drafting strongly written letters to administration, stationary for writing apologies for strongly written letters to administration, apology cakes for administrators who were offended by the initial letters, some “personal development” workshops no one went to, and an iguana fursuit, size medium.

This understandably upset just about everyone, so our intrepid MBC News reporters went straight to the SGA office to investigate. We were met by an SGA spokesman blocking the door to the office, seemingly trying to act casual while several SGA officers ran around frantically behind him.

“There’s nothing to worry about.” He assured us.

Behind him, one individual was seen yelling into a telephone “Can we allocate negative money to the Retriever? Are you sure? Well, do it anyway!”

“You really do not need to be sticking around for anything, because nothing is going on.” The spokesman casually stepped back into the office and slowly closed the door.

Before it closed someone could be heard exclaiming “Alright, alright! If we repossess the theatre orgs we should have just enough to give ourselves another raise!” Followed by cheering.

At press time the SGA confirmed that they do still plan to spend $20,000 on a center for civic something or other that no one has ever even heard of.

Sublease 1Br/1Ba St. Agnes Apartment March-July 27th 2019

<Tagline>1Br/1Ba Sublease apartment available for $925/month total</Tagline>

I am looking to sublease my fully furnished apartment (1BR, 1BA) at St. Agnes Apartments between March or April - July 27th 2019, with possibility to continue renting from St. Agnes. A safe and spacious area off the Catonsville UMBC shuttle line and across the street from Planet Fitness, liquor stores, fast food restaurants, IHop, Shoppers, and several stores. I am 12mins from UMBC and 20 minutes from downtown baltimore.

My rent is $825 per month plus utilities (which isn't typically very high ~$60/month). The windows are weather proofed. I would like only a one time $825 deposit, then $885 ($825 rent + $100 utilities and wifi) would be due on the 21st of each month.

So the total up front would be is just the $825 deposit (until the 21st). I take cash, money order, cashapp, or venmo.

The total for the 4 months would be $3,540 (825 rent for 4 months + ~$60 utilities for for months). I will return your $825 deposit at the end of the sublease if the apartment is fully cleaned (clean carpets, stove top, refrigerator, bathroom, etc).

My lease is up July 27th. If you are interested in staying and signing a full lease with St. Agnes, then we can coordinate that together. But I would need to know as soon as possible, because I have to give the leasing office 90 days notice of my moving out (April 27th).

Would you like to schedule a time this week to view the apartment?

History Department Advising Guidelines

As of Fall 2018 the History Department changed the format for undergraduate major and minor advising for advanced course registration. Instead of meeting with a specific, assigned advisor you can now be advised and get clearance for course registration by coming to open advising hours. Available advisors and advising hours will be posted on the History department website [ https://history.umbc.edu ] and in the History department. Contact Ms. Ison in the History department if you have any questions (410-455-2012) or (ison@umbc.edu).

Before your advising meeting with a History department advisor, please follow the Registrar’s Step by Step guide to Registration on your myUMBC page.

Check your degree audit to see what courses and requirements you have fulfilled.

Download and fill in the “Requirements to Complete the Major” form that can be found on the History department website under Students --Departmental Forms drop down menu [ https://history.umbc.edu/departmental-forms ].

Please bring this form with you to your advising session. This will ensure that you have a productive and timely advising session.

Note: If you have already established an advising relationship with a particular History professor, look out for their available advising times to see them during the advising weeks. If your schedules don’t align, you may contact them directly by email to set up an advising appointment. Otherwise, history majors can be advised by any history department advisor available during the open advising hours.
