Throwback Thursday: Kongfrontation

<Tagline>Before the Mummy, there was Kong...</Tagline>

If you have ever been to Universal Studios Orlando,
you have probably ridden “Revenge of the Mummy.” To those who are unfamiliar
with Revenge of the Mummy, it is an indoor roller coaster based off the 1999
hit movie The Mummy. Before Revenge
of the Mummy began to thrill guests, there was the predecessor attraction
called “Kongfrontation” that was based off the 1976 film, King Kong. Kongfrontation was one of the original attractions to on
opening day at Universal Studios Orlando on June 7, 1990. After the running
success of the Studio Tour’s King Kong Encounter at Universal Studios
Hollywood, the Florida park decided to make a standalone attraction based on
King Kong. The ride was designed by Totally Fun Company and Universal Creative
(formally called MCA Planning and Development at the time) to give riders the
feeling that they were travelling through New York City. Two 39-foot King Kong
animatronics were built for the ride by Totally Fun Company and Universal
Creative while Arrow Dynamics was in charge of building the ride system. Right
before the ride’s completion, Universal Studios Florida felt that they had a
gem of an attraction waiting for its guests.

The façade of the attraction was a replica of New
York’s Pennsylvania Station that took guests into the New York City Subway
station and Manhattan’s Roosevelt Island Tramway. The queue had televisions
featuring clips from the 1976 film King
Kong as well as breaking news stories with real-life anchor, Rolland Smith.
Once guests were done going through the queue, they boarded the aerial tram
vehicle that was to “evacuate” them from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island during
Kong’s attacks. During the ride, scenes of destruction was clearly visible like
damaged cars and derailed trains to build up the suspense that Kong was near.
Kong finally appears hanging from a bridge while being shot at by a police
helicopter. Enraged, Kong begins to attack the tram before attacking the
helicopter and sending it crashing into the bridge. May I mention how they had
banana scent spraying at the guests to indicate Kong’s breath? The tram makes
it over to Roosevelt Island before being intercepted by another helicopter
shining its light directly at the riders. After the guide urges the helicopter
to turn off its light, Kong unexpectedly appears right next to the tram ready
for revenge. This time, Kong grabs the tram, lifts it up, and drops it several
feet to give the riders a thrilling experience. The tram escapes once again to
drop off the riders who are featured on a news story showing how they narrowly
escaped the wrath of King Kong.

Even though Kongfrontation closed in the Fall of 2002,
its legacy continues. You can find the façade still intact at Revenge of the
Mummy or take a journey through Skull island at Islands of Adventures’ Skull
Island: Reign of Kong. Skull Island: reign of Kong is Solely based on Peter
Jackson’s film King Kong, so it does not incorporate any traits from the 1976
film. Despite the differences, the Skull Island attraction is a must-see
    experience.

A link to the video of the Kongfrontation ride can be
    found below:

Description

Law & Order: Ancient Rome - You have probably heard that modern legal systems owe much to the laws of Ancient Rome. But what did those laws actually look like? How did the courts run? How would you have gone about seeking justice if you were the victim of a crime? What sorts of punishments might you face if your case went poorly? Who benefited from this way of resolving conflict, and who was at a disadvantage? Who enforced the law? Was it fair? Was it comprehensive? What can it tell us about the way modern justice systems work? This class will explore the legal system of Ancient Rome through studying ancient cases, comparing modern legal principals to ancient, and simulating Roman-style trials. We will cover tort, family, and criminal law, litigation procedures, fines, and punishments within the social context of the Roman Empire.

GAAC Position Statement on GA Collective Bargaining Bill

<Tagline>Analysis of Anticipated Risks & Benefits to GAs of HB 270</Tagline>

Update for all Graduate Assistants:

GAAC has completed an analysis of a proposed bill that would impact GAs at UMBC and other institutions of the University System of Maryland. It is HB 270, the Graduate Assistant Collective Bargaining Fairness Act.

The executive summary of the document is copied below, and the complete document is attached.

Executive Summary

The purpose of the document is to describe the position of the GAAC at UMBC on HB 270, the Graduate Assistant Collective Bargaining Fairness Act, and to provide the reasoning for our position. GAAC arrived at its position on the matter by taking four points into account:

1) Unclear benefits from the contracts that would be negotiated under collective bargaining, an issue which GAAC will investigate further,

2) Additional GA expenses that may arise from passage of the bill,

3) The impact of unionization on existing relationships, and;

4) Political considerations of the proposed bill.

In light of the considerations of the above and through the present document, GAAC advises GAs that it is our opinion that the proposed right to collective bargaining as it is contained in HB 270 does not carry the expectation of benefits for GAs at UMBC in excess of the risks that it would have GAs incur. We therefore do not support the bill moving forward as it is currently drafted.

<Tagline>Donate to Retriever Essentials to Support Student's Success!</Tagline>

We'd like to take a moment to thank the campus community for the support over the last year!

The Retriever Essentials program has made significant strides in addressing hunger and homeless among our UMBC students. Last semester 100 bags of groceries were packed and delivered, an almost 100% increase from the previous academic year. Save a Swipe collected 280 meals and helped feed 23 students while they were on campus, and this semester students donated 375 meals to the program--we are so grateful for the ability to feed even more students through Save a Swipe this semester.

This success is attributed to you, the UMBC community, as you have stepped up and donated your time, energy and resources.

Yet, as time progresses we are discovering more students in need. Retriever Essentials is currently working toward sustainable methods to support them but we need your help!

You can continue to support these efforts by donating on Giving Day 2019, which is today! Our goal is to raise a significant amount of funds to cover food, toiletries, as well as a fully functional on-campus food pantry.

Please take some time to donate and spread this message. We can only eliminate this problem together. Join the #blackandgoldrush by giving to Retriever Essentials today!

UMBC's Monthly Payment Plan (MPP) can help you budget your out of pocket costs not covered by financial aid. The plan enables you to pay tuition and fees as well as university room and board on an installment basis.

Students who attend UMBC full-time may consider enrolling in (and finishing) 15 credits per fall and spring semester. Not only will this plan help students graduate within a timely fashion, it also yields other financial benefits such as lower overall tuition/educational expenses and lower student loan debt.

Not all textbooks are available to rent, but for those that are, this can significantly cut down on your book budget for the semester! Renting can often be a good option for your non-major courses.

It’s simple, carpooling saves on gas. UMBC has partnered with Zimride by Enterprise to help connect you to other UMBC students in your area who are looking to carpool.

Some other tips include:

Using an app to manage your money – There’s an app for that! Online Banking, websites like Mint.com, and budgeting spreadsheets can provide you with plenty of ways to keep your finances organized.

Keeping an eye out for student discounts – From museums, to movie theater tickets, to cell phone plans --- don’t hesitate to ask retailers and businesses if they offer student discounts!

Planning for big expenses in advance - Putting a little money aside each pay check will help you avoid the strain of having to decide between splurging on an afternoon at the mall or paying for school expenses such as text books or meal plans.

Being conservative with credit cards – Having a credit card or two can be good if you use them strategically. Start by maintaining one card and make at least one charge to it every month, such as gas or groceries.

And for fun, check out Baltimore College Town for your weekly run-down of free and affordable entertainment in the area!

Do you have some financially savvy ideas you would like to share? Feel free to post them below!
