Social Sciences Forum
The department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Health Administration and Policy, along with the Center for Social Science Scholarship, will be hosting Dr. Utpal Sandesara, from the University of Pennsylvania, a clinician and anthropologist who studies the uses of reproductive technology and the use of sex-selection in India. He will be giving the Health and Inequality Lecture on “Sex-Selective Abortion in India: Victims, Villains and Other Ways of Seeing the World” on Thursday at 4:00 in the Library Gallery (see below and attached).
While he is on campus, Dr. Sandesara has also agreed to talk informally with undergraduate students who are interested in combining medical school and social science doctoral programs from 12-12:45 on Thursday in PUP 204. Lunch will be provided by SAHAP and the Center for Social Science Scholarship.
ABOUT THE SOCIAL SCIENCES FORUM
Founded in 1999, the Social Sciences Forum brings distinguished social scientists to campus each year to present cutting-edge research on topics of vital interest to the social science community at UMBC and beyond. Lectures are free and open to the public, lasting approximately one hour, followed by Q&A and a reception.
ABOUT THE CENTER
The Center for Social Science Scholarship promotes excellence across the social sciences at UMBC. Spanning disciplines and programs, the Center aims to connect scholars who engage in social scientific study—asking key questions about social life, addressing problems of local and global concern, sharing knowledge about public issues, and connecting research to practice and policy. Guided by the core principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity, we encourage intellectual exchange and cross-cutting dialogue as we strive to advance social progress and equity in ways that are critically relevant not only to UMBC but to our local, national, and global communities. To foster high quality social science inquiry, the Center for Social Science Scholarship offers research and grant support, hosts trainings, promotes campus and community events, and provides opportunity for academic as well as public debate, for the benefit of the university and society.

Prepared and Ready for the Next Step
UMBC Student Success Stories
When a student says she is prepared and ready for the next step in life, we consider that a success story worth sharing! We sat down with soon-to-be graduate, Jessica Gronsbell, UMBC Data Science Graduate Program, and asked her a few questions about her experience with the program, faculty, and peers. She shared her story with us, and exciting news about a great opportunity offered to her. She already landed a job with a leading organization, Nielson, even before she graduates in May 2019. They are holding the position for her.

Sex-Selective Abortion in India
Social Science Forum lecture - February 28th
Over the past 30 years, selective abortion of female fetuses has become a disturbingly routine form of family planning in India, with expert estimates of the total exceeding half a million. Countless legal and policy measures aim to curb what has widely come to be seen as a public "crisis," but we know almost nothing about the experiences of families seeking the service or clinicians providing it. Drawing on 18 months of clinic-based fieldwork, anthropologist and physican-in-training Utpal Sandesara shines new light on the lived drama of sex selection. Taking listeners through a secretive black market, the sitting rooms of common households, and the dusty halls of government, Sandesara provocatively challenges longstanding approaches in public health. In the process, he illustrates the potential value of clinical research as a tool for understanding and addressing troubling social problems.

Intermittent Phonemail Services
DoIT is working to repair hardware in a phonemail node
Beginning over the weekend and continuing into today some users may have experienced intermittent phonemail service including both voicemail and call processing boxes. We are experiencing hardware failures in one of the campus phonemail nodes and have been working with our vendor to diagnose the problem. We are trying to conduct a repair as quickly as possible before a more severe failure occurs.
During the repair window the campus should expect some system voicemail outages as we will need to take some systems offline to install new hardware. DoIT will communicate details of the repair window when that information becomes available. In the meantime we will be working to maintain services as best we can given current circumstances.
Should you have any further questions or concerns please let me know.
We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause,
Ray Soellner
Associate Director of Communications
