Choice will host a costume pop-up closet--a bootique--for neighbors in Cherry Hill (south Baltimore City) on Saturday October 25, 2-4 p.m. We hope to have 100 costumes to distribute. Do you have any butterfly wings, crowns, super hero get-ups that you would like to donate? I would love to take them off your hands. All sizes welcome.

I have a box outside of my office in Shriver: Public Policy (PUP) 116. Please feel free to drop them off until Thursday, October 23.

Thanks to the many student organizations who are supporting this effort including Sisterhood who held a bake sale to buy ones! And thanks to Division of Professional Studies/Shriver colleagues who have been generous too.

Why Cherry Hill? It's our mothership! Choice was founded in Cherry Hill in 1988. It's our only residential neighborhood-based office.

The October Ultra release is a lightweight update featuring a valuable feature for faculty assessment management, allowing easier reuse of test questions and question banks.

Instructors can now tag test questions with metadata to organize and manage questions more effectively across tests, forms, and question banks. When creating or editing a question, you can enable metadata and assign one or more tags -- either by selecting from existing tags or creating your own. These tags make it easier to filter questions when reusing them or building pools, and metadata is preserved when content is copied from Original to Ultra. While tags are hidden from students, they offer a powerful way for instructors to label concepts, learning outcomes, or skills, supporting faster content alignment and more purposeful assessment building over time.

Image 1: Instructors can create and apply a tag to questions.

Students now have a more intuitive experience with fill-in-the-blank questions, which are displayed inline with surrounding text, whether presented as a sentence, paragraph, or table. This update ensures better readability and contextual clarity for students as they complete these question types, especially in assessments that test reading comprehension, vocabulary, or technical knowledge through embedded blanks.

Image 2: After this update, fill-in-the-blanks appear in line with the question.

Additional updates for October include:

Instructors must first add at least one question to a form before they can make it visible to students. Release conditions cannot be set until the form includes questions. This ensures that students only access complete and purposeful assessments.

The Save and Cancel actions are now standardized across several assessment settings pages.

When you can expect the update

Faculty should see the latest updates in their Ultra courses around October 2-3 2025. The next update to our Ultra test environment will take place on October 7, 2025; release notes are posted to the What's New in Ultra that same week. (ISSOTL) annual conference in Christchurch, New Zealand this November in partnership with the University of Canterbury. Dr. DeVita will co-present "Large-Scale Assessment as SoTL: An Emerging Structure that Supports Data-Driven Practices in Higher Education" with Dr. Megan Bolden, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Dr. Kristi Wiley, Lenoir Community College.

During their session, they will "explore how the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has evolved from reflective practice to a systematic, research-based approach to improving student learning. We argue that more emphasis should be placed on applying SoTL principles to large-scale assessment initiatives across institutions. Drawing from examples like the National Survey of Student Leaders and Queen's University Assessment Redesign Project, we showcase how SoTL frameworks can drive institutional change. We will present large-scale assessments that have led to meaningful reforms in undergraduate social work programs, multi-institutional research initiatives, and campus-wide career-readiness outcome mapping."

ISSOTL serves faculty members, staff, and students who care about teaching and learning as serious intellectual work. Through building intellectual and collaborative infrastructure, the Society supports the associational life that fosters scholarly work about teaching and learning.

recognizing and encouraging scholarly work on teaching and learning in each discipline, within scholarly societies and across educational levels,

promoting cross-disciplinary conversations to create synergy and prompt new lines of inquiry,

Invitation: PhD Proposal Defense - Bingxu Zhang

<Tagline>Oct. 9, 10am, M.E. Conference Room</Tagline>

Hello ME Community,

You are invited to join the PhD Proposal Defense of Bingxu Zhang on Thursday, October 9, beginning at 10am, in the ME Conference Room (ENGR210-I).

    Advisor: Weidong Zhu
Title: Wave Propagation in Discrete Nonlinear Lattices
Abstract:
This research focuses on theoretical analysis of wave propagation in strongly nonlinear discrete lattices. Discrete periodic lattices as a kind of matematerials have attracted a lot of attention due to their unique properties such as propagation and attenuation zones, tunable band gaps, nonreciprocal wave propagation, and so on. When the nonlinearity of the lattices is weak, the perturbation methods can capture some basic properties of wave propagation. However, the perturbation methods will be invalid and the incremental harmonic balance (IHB) method can be used to analyze wave propagation when the increase of the amplitude or system properties lead to nonlinear enhancement. But the IHB method may sometimes be invalid due to convergence issues.

This proposal plans to develop a series of analytical methods to analyze wave propagation behaviors in discrete nonlinear lattices, and research objectives are twofold: system response and stability analyses. Due to the absence of damping and external excitation in general, the solution for wave propagation is in a hyperplane with two dimensions. Hence, a modified IHB method combined with the least squares method is used to improve the robustness of the IHB method. The direction interpolation method (DIM) is developed to achieve smooth tracking at turning points. A method based on Hill's method is used to identify the stability and bifurcation of solutions for wave propagation in discrete strongly nonlinear structures, and to achieve tracking of bifurcations combined with the DIM. The outcomes are expected to establish predictive tools for nonlinear lattice dynamics and guide the design of adaptive metamaterials.
