Winter Orientation Advisor Opportunity

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary! Upon hire, YOU will be given the opportunity to select which days you are available to advise.

What is the compensation?

As Orientation Advising occurs during regular business hours, we can't offer additional compensation outside of the pay you are already receiving as a full-time staff member.

So, you're expecting me to work for free?

BY NO MEANS! This is not a "service opportunity" to squeeze more work out of you for the same pay -- we encourage you, instead, to work with your supervisor to be released from other duties during the scheduled session hours. And, we will still try to make it worth your while in other ways: this is a unique, free, and credentialed professional development opportunity. Advisors are trained in an intensive full-day virtual session, and then gain real-world experience working with students. Advisors who complete the training, a short assessment, and two days of advising are eligible to receive the Orientation Advisor microcredential, which highlights the customer service, analytical, and communication skills required for the role.

I definitely don't have time for this!

The time commitment would be as little as one full day of training on January 5, and then -- spread out over the course of January at YOUR convenience -- as few as 2-3 days of advising from 11:15am - 4:30pm.

But what would my department get out of it?

Your participation can be very strategic for your department indeed! Orientation Advising touches students' lives at the very start of their careers at UMBC. It's the earliest possible opportunity to direct and guide their paths here, and to introduce them to the services offered by our many student-facing departments. For academic departments, moreover, working with students at this stage can lead to smoother degree progress and fewer issues down the road. I would be pleased to be part of any discussion to highlight how your participation can benefit your department, and to discuss any releases from other responsibilities during that small investment of time.

Can I learn more without committing?

YES! We are offering informational sessions for anyone interested or who even just might be interested in finding out about this exciting opportunity to expand their skillsets, make meaningful connections, serve their departments, and themselves!

Join the Giving Pack!

<Tagline>UMBC’s all-student movement to grow philanthropy</Tagline>

Dear Retrievers,

As I've had the pleasure of getting to know campus over the past few months, I am continually impressed by the inclusive and supportive nature of the UMBC community. Inclusive excellence is not just something we preach; it’s ingrained in our everyday lives, moving the university toward President Valerie Sheares Ashby’s bold vision for our future.

Although higher education is going through unprecedented times across the country, UMBC continues to grow and innovate because of our inclusive culture and the continued support of our most ardent advocates—our donors. Philanthropy is all around you and plays a crucial role in making your UMBC experience possible. Every student has benefited from donor generosity in some way. Gifts from generous donors help launch new programs, build and maintain facilities, support research, and provide scholarships. These gifts also support your fellow Retrievers through initiatives like the Stay Black & Gold Emergency Fund and Retriever Essentials, which make sure no student has to choose between food and their education. The UMBC experience we know today exists because of this ongoing generosity.

We know that philanthropy fuels possibility. It’s with this conviction that I am excited to invite you to be part of something bold, something that will shape the future of our university—the Hilltop Society Giving Pack.

What Is the Hilltop Society Giving Pack?

As a new part of the Hilltop Society, one of UMBC’s most prestigious giving societies, the Giving Pack is our all-student movement to explore and grow philanthropy on campus. Philanthropy is often thought of as donating, but at its core, philanthropy simply means giving back. While supporting UMBC through a gift is one meaningful way to do that, it’s far from the only way. Philanthropy can be expressed by sharing your time, lending your voice, showing gratitude, and working to strengthen the community around you. That’s where the Giving Pack comes in. Together, we’ll explore the many forms of philanthropy:

writing thank-you cards

volunteering on and off campus

connecting with advancement professionals

gathering for social events

building skills through professional development workshops

The Pack is here to help students see that giving is broad, impactful, and lasting, and that every act of generosity helps keep the Retriever spirit bold, inclusive, and strong.

How to Get Involved

For those students who want to get involved, we created a special myUMBC group for our Giving Pack community as a way to stay connected and share updates about events. We’re also hosting our first event this Thursday, October 2, 5 – 6:30 p.m., in The Commons Fireside Lounge (level 3). Come celebrate the launch of Hilltop Society’s Giving Pack with snacks, free swag, and plenty of Retriever pride during our first-ever student social hour! If you have any questions, please contact Nicholas Stachurski, assistant director of annual giving, at nstachur@umbc.edu.

I am truly humbled and grateful for the profound impact each of you has on our entire UMBC community. It is a great time to be a Retriever, and I hope you will join me in leading us into this exciting new era!

With Retriever pride,

Critical Religious Pluralism: Confronting Hate, Building Belonging (cross-posted)

<Tagline>Culture Conversations FALL 25</Tagline>

Overall Series Description

This fall's culture conversations is a three-part series that explores how a values-driven approach can deepen understanding and support for religious diversity. The series will address antisemitism, Islamophobia, and biases related to non-western religious and spiritual traditions, which can encompass a wide range of global traditions present at UMBC, including those common in South Asia such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. Together, we will explore the intersections of faith and culture, building the skills to create communities where all beliefs are respected and valued.

A mix of in-person and virtual sessions will be provided this semester.

September HPCF Newsletter

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to give everyone an update regarding the UMBC HPCF and other Research Computing projects currently undertaken by DoIT.

Summary

Office hours! We have them! They are available via appointment at https://hpcf.umbc.edu/help/office-hours/ or drop-in in-person on Fridays at 1:30 in Engineering Building Room 102

We've added some new GPU partitions in an effort to make it more clear what nodes are "safe" from preemption

Staff will be continuing to reach out to PIs in an effort to continue migrating to the new RRStor system

SIG meetings updates and new "User Support" SIG group

SSH connection issues

Office Hours
In coordination with the ScaleS center, we are excited to announce that drop-in office hours have returned for this academic semester. They will be held weekly on Fridays at 1:30PM in Engineering Building Room 102. In fact, we've already held our first drop-in office hours on September 19th and it was a SMASHING success.

When coming with questions please note that it is a first come, first served system, and to have as much information ready as possible. Remember, the faster we can get started on your issue, the faster we can fix it. We will continue to offer one-on-one appointments for more in-depth problems or if the drop-in hours don't work for you.

You can see a listing of all drop-in office hour times on the HPCF myUMBC group events listing: https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/hpcf/events

For scheduling an office hour appointment, please refer to this page: https://hpcf.umbc.edu/help/office-hours/

GPU Partitions
During our last downtime, one of our main goals was to implement a new GPU Slurm model, where contributing PIs have priority on machines that they helped to purchase.

In an effort to relieve some of the confusion around these changes, we've added two new partitions gpu-general and gpu-contrib. The gpu-general partition will place a job on a node that is not owned by one of the contributing PIs. This guarantees that the job will run for at least three days without being preempted when this partition is specified in the Slurm commands. The gpu-contrib partition is not a usable partition, meaning that no one can submit jobs to this partition. This partition shows users what nodes are owned by one (or more) PIs.

If you don't care what node you are placed on you can still use the standard gpu partition.

Migration of Storage Volumes
While the new Ceph Storage Cluster (RRStor) is here to stay, the Isilon storage system will be sunset at the end of this calendar year. The Isilon storage system was purchased at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, but its proprietary file system, high cost of expansion, and high software support costs make it no longer feasible for us to maintain.

Instead, we'll be taking a portion of the saved expense from the Isilon and dedicating it to expanding RRStor and its capabilities. This will require that we migrate research storage volumes from the Isilon Storage System to Ceph before the end of the calendar year. This represents the careful movement of more than 2PiB of data, so DoIT Research Computing staff will be working with researchers to schedule the migration of their storage volumes so as to minimize impact on the research enterprise. Note that the duration of each volume migration will depend on the size of the volume.

Staff will continue reaching out to PIs to schedule migrations. At this time, we have about 10% of all migrations completed. We ask that you continue to work with us to make sure that we have all volumes scheduled by October 15th, and sunset the Isilon volumes completely by Thanksgiving.

SIG
The SIG-CPU and SIG-GPU Committees have met and selected members. Please see the Shared Infrastructure Governance webpage for more information and past meeting materials. The following SIG Committees have meetings scheduled, and will be visible on this myUMBC Group Events page.

The CPU Committee will hold a meeting of voting members October 2, 2025

The GPU Committee will be meeting October 27, 2025 at 13:30ET, all researchers using GPUs are welcome. Location TBD

The Cloud Committee is working to identify membership and meeting times

The User Experience Committee will be meeting on the Third Tuesdays of each month at 13:30ET. These user experience meetings are open to any user of the chip HPC. Location TBD

SSH Connection Issues
We've seen an increase in the number of users saying they are having connection issues. Specifically with repeated closures of their active SSH connections. We're currently working alongside our DoIT network engineering team to determine the cause of the issue. Any information about a dropped connection you might have experienced will help us. The information we need to know is the following:

Date and time of login

Date and time of dropped connection

Are you on/off campus?

Are you on a wired/or wireless network?

Are you using the VPN?

Which login node did you connect to initially (chip-login1/2)?

Publications
If you have any publications, presentations, theses, or other works that made use of the campus cluster(s), please submit an RT Ticket with bibliographic information so that we can accurately reflect this work in our records and on the HPCF Website.

Need Help?
As always, please communicate any issues/questions to the Research Computing RT Queue (hpcf.umbc.edu > User Support > Request Help).

Thanks for reading,
Roy Prouty
Assistant Director for Research Computing
