Researcher of the Week: Jasmine Strong

<Tagline>Using research to solve complex, interdisciplinary problems</Tagline>

Jasmine Strong is an Individualized Study major, focusing on Visual Art and Multicultural Therapy, with a Print Media Minor, who will graduate in December, 2018.

List any Scholars/Honors programs you are a part of: Tau Sigma National Honor Society

Title of your research project:

Chinese International Transracial Adoptees Using Art-Based Narrative Interviewing to Practice Self Expression About Their Own Adoption Experience and Social Identity. This was my INDS capstone project.

Describe your project:

The purpose of this study was to see how Chinese international transracial adoptees use art-based research methods such as zine-making to explore and express their adoption experience. The goal of this capstone project was to capture the voices and experiences of Chinese adoptees.

How did using an interdisciplinary model benefit your work?

Throughout this research process I learned that my idea was a complex problem. From using an interdisciplinary research model I found ways to integrate, collaborate, and connect different disciplines to fill in the gaps of missing information. Having an interdisciplinary mindset helped me engage with different people, resources, and communities. The benefit from connecting with different people was it added an enriching experience to my research.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

Throughout the course of this project I had an amazing opportunity to work with Dr. Jayshree Jani from the Social Work department and Dr. Mario Sto. Domingo from the Psychology department. I connected with Dr. Jani through a previous and loving advisor Jill Wrigley. I connected with Dr. Sto. Domingo when we worked together through the Baltimore Collegetown Leadershape program. I choose to work with both of these researchers, because they were experts in their fields, they were interested in my research, and we connected on the idea of using interdisciplinary research methods to approach this work.

How did you become interested in this project?

Originally, I became interested in this study based on my personal experience as a Chinese adoptee. However, throughout the course of this project I realized part of my interest became about implementing my research to support other international adoptees and the community I feel passionate about.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

One of the hardest parts about my research was finding enough participants within a certain amount of time. My recommendation to fellow researchers who need participants is start recruitment early and aim to have more people just in case someone drops out or cannot attend. The most unexpected experience as a researcher was seeing how much changed throughout the entity of this project.

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part about my research was seeing the amount of growth this project took and how many new pathways I can take from this experience. Yes, I feel great about accomplishing my study, but I feel most appreciative about who I worked with, what I learned, and sharing my work with different communities of people.

How will you disseminate your research?

I plan to share my research by creating more Pop Up zine-making workshops within the international transracial adoptee community. Currently, I am working on starting up an organization called, Adoption Creates. I want my research to be accessible to more adoptees and provide opportunities where adoptees can engage with my ideas.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

My recommendation to other students who are getting involved with research is, stick to an idea that you are truly passionate about. I learned that researching about an idea that I love opens many great and unexpected opportunities. In addition, create a support system that will send encouragement, and support throughout the entity of the project. Of course, have fun with your ideas! Experiment, play, and refine.

What are your career goals?

My career goals involve a mixture of continuing to study about art-based research methods, implementing those methods into re-designed workshops to support the international transracial community, and looking into ways on how to transfer this information towards human centered computing. In addition, I want to continue building my organization called, Adoption Creates.

Making the most of winter break

After the intense storm that is finals week has passed and the semester comes to a close, it can be tempting to spend the entire winter break sleeping in and watching television. While relaxing is important and enjoyable, there are other things that you can do during winter break that are far more engaging. Some students work, others do research and some even use the time to travel abroad.

“The break was very long compared to high school,” said Keren Herran, a sophomore majoring in individualized study with a focus on global health and environmental factors. “I wanted to do something enjoyable and productive.” Last winter, she studied art and culture in Rome through the American Institute of Foreign Studies. Herran said one of the most enjoyable parts of the experience was being able to “learn about a monument in lecture and then walk outside to see the actual monument.”

That type of experience can be very difficult to fit into the academic year because longer sessions cost more money and can disrupt your progression through your major. However, the experiences offered during the winter sessions are more affordable because the term is significantly shorter. Fundraising opportunities and study-abroad scholarships make it possible for anyone to study abroad.

Studying abroad may not be the best option for everyone, but that does not mean you cannot participate in an engaging experience during winter break. Assefa Akinwole, a junior chemistry major, spent his winter break doing research on campus. “The winter was nice because I got time to just consistently work on a project and develop a greater appreciation and understanding for it,” he said.

During the academic year, students have to balance classes, clubs and research, but during the winter break that time and effort can be dedicated solely to research. That type of commitment looks great to graduate school admissions boards.

If studying abroad and doing research are not for you, there are still many ways to spend winter break. A 2015 study from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce found that over 70% of undergraduate students have worked while attending school. It never hurts to have extra spending money, especially during the holidays.

At UMBC, there is also the option of enrolling in winter classes. Instead of overloading your schedule during the academic year, use the winter to take the required classes, or extra ones that you find interesting. This can help you stay on track for graduating in four years or even early. Even if you cannot come to campus during the winter session, there are a plethora of online classes to choose from.

It may sound counter-productive to spend a break doing extra work, but in the long run it can pay off. Whether that means having an extra edge when applying to graduate schools, an extra experience when you are applying for a job or even just an extra story to share with your friends, taking full advantage of the six week break can be a great decision.

The Facebook group that became UMBC’s biggest social media hub

A departure from the manicured content produced by the institutions themselves, student-run meme pages are becoming staples of the college experience across the US. They can be host to anything from Student Government Association discourse, to university updates, to several months of Is This Loss spam — to which any of the thousands of members of the UMBC’s Facebook meme group can attest. The current and most consistent title for that group is “UMBC Memes for Smoke-Free Teens,” though it is impossible to know how long that name will stay; within the past year, the group has been called “UMBC memes for bracket-breaking teens” and “Fire Paul Dillon,” a testament to how it stays unapologetically relevant with significant events at the school.

Born in 2016, this page is the second generation of the pre-2013 relic “UMBC Memes.” The latter features classics like Forever Alone and One Does Not Simply, and its last post is a simple call from early 2012 to keep the page hate-free — with nine likes.

“Those are like ancient memes,” laughs senior information systems major Samuel Becker, who co-created UMBC Memes for Smoke-Free Teens alongside his brother Joshua. “There was definitely lacking a single community meme page [in 2016].” Sensing a need, the two set up a page for UMBC and, as it grew, began bringing on new admins.

“My first choice [for the position of admin] was Ari Page, one of my oldest friends,” Becker explains. “Zach Clifton was from UMBC Progressives … it’s sort of a loose process.” At present, there are nine people managing the page in total, but that number is expected to grow as they age out. When asked for his post-graduation plans regarding the group, Samuel indicated no intention of leaving — but he does expect to offload his responsibilities to future members.

Despite a few spin-off attempts, UMBC Memes for Smoke-Free Teens remains the obvious social media hub for student life at a school that is often disparaged for having a disengaged student body. It is solidifying itself as a representation of an influence on UMBC culture — much like UMBC Memes was in its heyday. Unlike its predecessor, however, this leadership is not afraid of a little controversy. Members endorse political candidates, criticize the definition of gender in official school surveys and even kindled a firestorm over still-ongoing allegations of sexual assault case mishandling at the university. Without the necessary diplomacy of institutional responses, members can be much more confrontational about community issues. In this way, UMBC Memes for Smoke-Free Teens is not your 2012 graduate’s meme page.

At the same time, UMBC’s meme culture is still for anyone to enjoy. Join rates jumped following a historic March Madness win against the University of Virginia earlier this year, and membership now includes current students, alumni, general Marylanders and even the occasional UMBC professor among others. In fact, co-creator Joshua Becker actually attends Princeton, though acknowledging this in the group is touted as a ban-able offense. In March, the University of Maryland, College Park’s page changed its title in deference to UMBC’s basketball victory, an example of how school meme pages can build relationships at and between universities. Characterizing what many still see largely as a commuter campus, UMBC Memes for Smoke-Free Teens is how people stay connected within the school.

Be it squirrels or crashed police cars, the content showcases the inside jokes and the experiences of being involved with UMBC. Any community member can find something to laugh at and relate to, and controversies aside, it is not so opposed to the no-hate-please philosophy of UMBC Memes. Under the group description, it is still listed as a “family.”

Digital Workflows Integrate Procedure And Technology

<Tagline>AOP Provides New Opportunities For Business Efficiency</Tagline>

UMBC’s Office of Academic Opportunities Programs (AOP) is dedicated to providing assistance, resources, and support to students who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education in order to facilitate academic success. By coordinating with UMBC departments as well as off campus agencies such as the US Department of Education and the National Science Foundation, AOP encourages and empowers pre-college and ambitious UMBC students to achieve their academic goals.

In order to enhance its correspondence with students and their families as well as improve its business processes, AOP has adopted DocuSign as their e-signature and digital workflow tool. With help from developers in the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), AOP has converted much of their paper forms to electronic, automated forms that can be signed and submitted without ever having to print.

The McNair Scholars Program, for example, has transformed its entire application process to DocuSign, creating a digital envelope that allows applicants to upload any financial documents or recommendations directly to the form and submit it all through a secure email. DocuSign forms can also be filled out on any mobile device, which can significantly reduce the time it takes for students to submit their applications.

In addition to improving the experience for students, AOP has integrated DocuSign’s capabilities with their existing business practices to create a much more efficient system for processing and storing the submitted forms. One of the big disadvantages of paper applications is always the back and forth correspondence and approvals required when the form is filled out improperly. This takes up a lot of time that staff could be using to complete their numerous other tasks and tends to leave both staff and students dissatisfied.

With DocuSign, staff can create templates that guide signers step by step through the form, offering tooltips and validations to ensure that signers input the correct information. At any time, staff can also check on the status of each pending form as DocuSign timestamps each time the signer views and edits the form. Once the form has been submitted, AOP staff have designated Box folders into which DocuSign will automatically upload the completed application and all supporting documents. If they still need to follow up with the applicant, AOP can cancel or resend the form with just a few clicks.

McNair Scholars Assistant Director Michael Hunt, B.S. ‘06 Mathematics, says that the ability to adjust and automate the application’s workflow has gone a long way in reducing administrative work for McNair staff. Though the McNair Scholars Program has gone farthest in reducing paper, AOP’s other programs have also taken up DocuSign as well.

AOP Director Corris Davis, B.S. ‘98 Biological Sciences, praised the use of DocuSign for the many agreements and contracts used in the Upward Bound Program, which reaches out to high school students in Baltimore City and County. Many of these forms require both the student and a parent/guardian to read and agree to numerous program requirements and rules. DocuSign not only skips the hassle of having to submit all these forms by mail, but also does more to ensure that the signers fully read each section by preventing submission before each part is initialed and signed.

In advancing their mission to enable academic success, AOP has simultaneously improved their business processes to benefit both students and staff. Moving forward, as DoIT continues to integrate DocuSign with campus systems, AOP expects to create even more efficient solutions.
